| Posted by Jane Bickley From Grosse Ile Camera, Dec 2, 2011 The Grosse Ile Rotary Club, with the help of Sacred Heart Catholic Parish and the Grosse Ile Kroger, donated complete Thanksgiving dinners to local families. Terry Morreau of the Grosse Ile Food Pantry provided the Rotary Club with a list of disadvantaged families in the area that are in need of assistance.
Grosse Ile Rotary members delivered the packages on Nov 19th to more than 50 families in Grosse Ile, Trenton, Wyandotte, Ecorse and southwest Detroit. The care packages consisted of all the trimmings to make a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, including 15- to 20-pound turkeys, mashed potatoes, yams, corn, green beans, gravy, rolls and brownies. Rotary and Interact members met at Perdino’s Restaurant on Nov 18th to put the packages together.
The idea was the brain child of Roberto Sanchez, past District 6400 governor of Rotary, and Bambang Soedarjatno, the current president of the Grosse Ile Rotary Club. “Today we are here to share our time, talents and treasures to help those who are less fortunate than us to enjoy the meaning of the Thanksgiving holiday, to share what we have during these hard financial conditions,” Soedarjatno said.
Grosse Ile Rotary is involved with other projects such as the Island Directory, Guatemala Literacy Program, Grosse Ile High School Interact Club, the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, Del-Ray neighborhood activities, Grosse Ile Citizen of the Year, scholarship programs and medical missions. “We have been involved with so many international activities that sometimes we forget to take care of our own local neighborhood,” Sanchez said. “The least we could do is to help a family in the Downriver community.”
The local Rotary members thanked Morreau for her assistance in providing the list of families, Grosse Ile Kroger store Manager John Dozny for assisting with the large order and how to receive the best possible pricing, and Perry Tsipis for allowing the club members to meet and package the items at his restaurant. Grosse Ile Rotary Club President Bambang Soedarjatno helps donate food to the needy. Grosse Ile Rotary Club members and Grosse Ile High School Interact Club members provide food for families for Thanksgiving.

Our club tries to at least once a year go out on the Detroit River, have a fantastic dinner, and enjoy the scenery. Here are some of the pictures.
Enjoy........
Sorry these pictures a "a bit late", but I finally figured out how to open the file and then get the picutes on onto the web site. We are making progress, however slow. There are plenty more pictues, just click on the word MORE below. Jane | | Posted by Jane Bickley On July 14th, Grosse Ile Rotary hosted the Jo Brighton Special Olympians and their parents to a boat ride on the Detroit River and a picnic lunch afterwards. The weather was just perfect, the food was great, the kids and parents were so appreciative; it was just a great time. Bruce Milkins, Captian of "Duck Factory" & Warren Hurst, Captain of the "Clam Digger II" did a wonderful job taking the kids and parents out on the Detroit River to see Bob-Lo Island, the Trenton Canal, Grosse Ile & Sugar Islands - thank you so much for again providing the boat ride.

She has also brought together the hundreds (yes hundreds) of volunteers who serve as costumers, make up artists, dancers, soloists, choiristers, on sets, staging, lighting, sound, props, decorations, fund raising , tickets, security, pr., etc. in the dramatical music presentation including the Christmas story. A professional orchestra makes this one of the best musical gifts to the downriver community. | | Posted by Jane Bickley Bam and Sandy Soedarjatno at DisCon2011. The event was staged in the Lombard Westin outside Chicago. Not a singel detail was over looked. DG Kim could not have represented out district in any finer fashion. Two extraordinary highlights were the flash mob in downtown Chicago Millennium Park to highlight the End Polio Now campaign of RI and the Tonight Show fewturing the RI President, President Elect; Treasurer; incoming and outgoing RI Trustees; and other distinguished RI dignitaries. On Friday morning we all boarded buses and headed to Millennium Park for the Freeze Flash Mob event, and then some people went to visit the RI offices, some went to the Shedd Aquarium, and then shopping. We were so lucky that the weather was picture perfect for the Flash Mob, then it just kept getting colder and colder and finally started pouring rain on the bus ride back to the hotel.
That evening after dinner was the International Carnival Reception with all sorts of types of entertainment and assorted candies for dessert followed by a DJ and dancing.
On Saturday morning we had a more traditional plenary session, and PRID Bill Ives helped warm up the crowd with a sing song, and Allen Park Rotarian Christian Kreipke did a lovely job on the piano. We learned about the Miracle League Ball Field project, and an update on the 3 million pound challenge, a presentation by the Vocational Training Team from Australia, the Literacy Initiative (starring Margaret Williamson!) and PDG Dr Bill Chase gave an update on his work in the Amazon. After the break we heard about the World's largest Interact Club - Allen Park High School, the Turkey Challenge between the Detroit and the Grosse Pointe Rotary clubs, and a presentation by Jean Irwin who is a past Ambassadorial Scholar. Her presentation was outstanding.
