| Posted by Lauren Marquez-Viso on Apr 25, 2013 | | Posted by Lauren Marquez-Viso on Apr 26, 2013 Thank you to everyone who attended our Crapple fundraiser on April 13th and to everyone who helped make this event a huge success. This was the first time we had a fundraiser of this type and it was extremely fun and successful. A special thank you to the Lakeview Men's Club where the event was held. Another special thank you to everyone who donated unique crapple/raffle prizes that made for an unforgettable prize-winning experience. Check out photos of the event here. | | Posted by Lauren Marquez-Viso on Apr 25, 2013 Welcome new members! We are so happy to have Emily Marxer, Emily DeWees, Jaime Allen and Amanda Young join our club. In the photo, Club President, Rachel Greenhoe, provides Jaime Allen with a member pin. | | Posted by Lauren Marquez-Viso on Apr 12, 2013 Our volunteer event with the Night Ministry was a success! On Monday, February 25th we had a sandwich-making party and then had a great experience distributing them along with soup, chips, snacks, and hot chocolate the next day. It was snowy, slushy and cold but that didn't dampen our spirits! Check out the photos from the event. We volunteered with Common Pantry on March 27th and had a great time! We distributed groceries to clients from 6-8pm. Some of us volunteers were veterans and for others it was their first time and everyone did really great! Nick was running to gather everything from frozen meat to boxes to diapers. Jane, Eric and Mark were pros at packing the canned and boxed goods. John was on duty at the refrigerator and helped people use their shopping points wisely. Lauren helped to ensure a smooth operation by assisting clients and bridging the gap between client registration and the grocery prep. Check out our photos. | | Posted by Lauren Marquez-Viso on Apr 12, 2013 Twelve Rotarians were honored as Champions of Change at the White House on Friday, 5 April. Read about the ceremony and these wonderful Rotarians here. A Rotarian from our District, 6450, was chosen as one of the Champions! Neli Vazquez-Rowland is a member of the Rotary Club of Chicago. Vazquez-Rowland and her husband in 1994 established Safe Haven, a comprehensive program that helps thousands of people dealing with homelessness, hunger, addiction, chronic unemployment, and other issues. | | Posted by Lauren Marquez-Viso on Mar 03, 2013 ARE YOU INTERESTED IN HOSTING A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY IN YOUR HOME? This summer, WorldChicago is receiving three groups of international students who are in Chicago to participate in a youth leadership program, practice their English, and live with an American family to learn more about the culture. They are coming from Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Iraq, on a international exchange sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. We are currently looking for host families to receive these youth for periods of 10 days to 2 weeks. | | Posted by Lauren Marquez-Viso on Apr 25, 2013 | | Posted by Lauren Marquez-Viso on Feb 22, 2013 February 23rd is Rotary's 108th Anniversary! The grant was paid at the end of January and the equipment has been purchased. Please check out the Tepehua Community Center Facebook page for photos. You will see how they expanded the kitchen to make room for all of this wonderful, new, industrial-grade equipment. This equipment will do wonders to increase their efficiency in preparing meals to serve those in need in the community. This volunteer-run community center does absolutely amazing things including running a medical clinic, dental clinic, sewing classes, English classes, activities for kids, a resale shop, and of course the weekly meals (comida). Thank you all for supporting our club's participation in this project! | | Posted by Lauren Marquez-Viso on Jan 15, 2013 Rotary and polio are mentioned in another TIME magazine article, posted on time.com on 13 January. The article discusses India’s successful battle against polio and positions Rotary as the leader in the global eradication effort. Read the full story. Rotary was also mentioned in a Wall Street Journal article, posted on 13 January. It reflects on India’s tremendous achievement of two years polio-free and what it means for the country. Rotary and its partners’ significant contributions to the fight against polio are recognized. They have a Facebook page (click here) and it would be great if you could "Like" them to help support this wonderful place that is helping to transform an impoverished community. Our grant is nearly ready for payment. The folks at the community center are busy with the construction work to expand the kitchen. You can see photos of the work on their Facebook page. Once the construction work is complete, this grant will be paid. | | Posted by Lauren Marquez-Viso on Dec 10, 2012 Congratulations to our club! Our Matching Grant, 78155, has been approved! This grant will provide much-needed, heavy-duty kitchen equipment and supplies for the Tepehua Community Center in Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico. Our host partner club, Ajijic Rotary Club, is hard at work overseeing the kitchen expansion that will make room for this new equipment. This equipment will allow this community center to more effectively battle hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in Chapala's poorest neighborhood. Our friends in Mexico have invited us down to visit the project any time. If you are interested in taking a trip to see our project or want more information about the project, please contact Lauren Marquez-Viso. | | Posted by Lauren Marquez-Viso on Dec 10, 2012 United Airlines is once again giving away 10 million miles to its charity miles partners as part of a year-end gift. Headlined by the Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, and Neil Young with Crazy Horse, Global Citizen Festival 2012 drew a live audience of more than 60,000, and many more online and via television broadcasts.Rotary produced a seven-minute segment preceding Neil Young, himself a polio survivor. Emmy-award winning actress Archie Panjabi, a celebrity participant in Rotary’s “This Close” public service campaign; Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, daughter of Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and the country’s goodwill ambassador for polio eradication; Canadian Rotarian and polio-survivor Ramesh Ferris; and RI General Secretary John Hewko stirred up the crowd to help eradicate the disease. “The long road bringing us to Central Park tonight began in the 1970s, when Rotary – an international humanitarian organization of business and professional leaders -- began vaccinating the world’s children against polio,” Hewko said. “Since then, Rotary and our partners -- UNICEF, WHO, the CDC, and the Gates Foundation -- have immunized more than 2 billion children, pushing polio out of almost every country on earth.” The Global Festival, which organizers are calling the largest syndicated charity concert in online and broadcast television history, was timed to create awareness around the UN General Assembly in New York. At a high-level side event on polio eradication 27 September, Rotary announced a new funding commitment of US$75 million over three years to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). Rotary has already contributed nearly $1.2 billion to the GPEI since the beginning of the campaign. We have a food drive to benefit Common Pantry Saturday, October 20, a re-stocking/clean-up day at the Pantry on Saturday, October 27th, and the Thanksgiving food distribution on Wednesday, November 21 (we need volunteers for these opportunities!). How? Be part of the World’s Biggest Commercial to support polio eradication - the world’s biggest public health initiative – by adding a photo of yourself alongside Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Bill Gates, Jackie Chan, Amanda Peet and other world figures and celebrities participating in Rotary's "This Close" campaign. Check out the prelaunch video to see how it works. On 24 October, go to www.endpolionow.org, to be included in the constantly expanding commercial. Rotary has also created a page on the social media service Thunderclap, which enables supporters to sign up to share a single message through their social media accounts. The message will go out at a designated date and time to amplify the voice of our cause. Visit our page on Thunderclap to add your voice. | | Posted by Mark Jak on Oct 18, 2012 | | Posted by Lauren Marquez-Viso The Rotary Foundation is the major funding vehicle for Rotary Service Above Self around the world. Rotarians often wonder what happens to the money that is donated to the Rotary Foundation. To better understand how contributions translate into the incredible achievements of the Rotary Foundation use the Rotary Foundation Funding module to learn how contributions pay for grants and which programs they can support. If each Rotarian contributes $100 per year to the Rotary Foundation, Rotary, with its approximately 1.2 million members around the world, would collect $120 million. Help Rotary meet or exceed this goal! One hundred dollars per year is only 27 cents per day. That is a very small price to pay in the spirit of Service Above Self. These 27 cents per day will help the Rotary Foundation make an even bigger difference in the world. You can read about the Rotary Foundation at www.rotary.org/foundation. The Rotary Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 and all of its financial information is available to the public. Check out this site to learn more about Rotary's financials. The grant funds that come back to our club and district for our service projects are the direct result of Rotarians giving to the Annual Fund. In the 2010-2011 year alone TRF provided $150.2 million in program awards to support the fight against polio, life-changing humanitarian grants and inspirational educational programs.
You can conveniently make a tax deductible $100 donation to the Rotary Foundation Annual Fund online at www.rotary.org/en/Contribute/Pages/ridefault.aspx. You can even sign up for recurring contributions with Rotary Direct. Think about spreading out four $25 contributions over 12 months or $10 per month, super convenient! | | Posted by Lauren Marquez-Viso Our international service project this year is to provide an industrial-grade kitchen at a community center in the Tepehua community located near Lake Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico. The Tepehua community is the poorest in the Lake Chapala area and suffers from high levels of substance abuse, domestic abuse, high infant mortality, high levels of cervical cancer among women, lack of sanitation, lack of health/dental care, nutritional deficiencies, unemployment and general poverty. The local Rotarians helped create a community center just two years ago and have been instrumental in beginning to help this community raise itself up. The community center provides a weekly meal (comida in Spanish) to help combat hunger, improve nutrition and gain trust in the community. The number of attendees started at 50 and now is up to 200! They have started a medical/maternal health clinic, dental clinic, hygiene and shower program, sewing classes, English classes, a thrift store/bazaar, counseling sessions, and assist with educational enrollment for children. All services are FREE to the community! The community members have really taken ownership of the center and its programs and help to run things there. They are very invested in the success of this valuable community resource which is a source of pride for the community. Click here to see photos of the Tepehua Community Center. Please contact Lauren Marquez-Viso with any questions or thoughts. | | Posted by Lauren Marquez-Viso on Aug 28, 2012 Check out Rotary Showcase! Excerpt:
"Thanks to the Rotary Club of Chicago Lakeview, Neumann has launched its new "Adopt-a-Home" program, with the ultimate goal of matching a volunteer group with each of our 34 community homes in Chicago. The program was initially piloted when the Rotary Club committed to providing its time, resources and talents to Neumann's Leland and Winnemac homes. In the time since, Rotary Club members have donated furniture, lamps, bedding and artwork and helped secure paint and flooring donations (among other items) to help two of our homes receive much needed makeovers. We are thrilled to share that a new volunteer group from Saint Clement Church is following in their footsteps, taking on painting projects and donating mattresses, bedding, lamps and other items to make a real difference at Neumann's Sacramento house."

Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram E. Shorey gathered in Loehr's office for what would become known as the first Rotary club meeting. Harris' desire for camaraderie among business associates brought together these four men and eventually led to an international organization of service and fellowship.
Throughout the week of 23 February, in honor of Rotary's anniversary, Rotary clubs and districts will be illuminating landmarks around the world with the End Polio Now message. This year, the landmarks include:
The Water and Power Development Building in Lahore, Pakistan Frere Hall in Karachi, Pakistan Roppongi Hills Skyscraper in Tokyo, Japan Federation Square in Melbourne, Australia City Hall in San Juan, Puerto Rico. | | Posted by James Damato on Jan 17, 2012 Rotary International has succeeded in meeting the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s US$200 million match in funding for polio eradication, raising more than $202.6 million as of 17 January. “We’ll celebrate this milestone, but it doesn’t mean that we’ll stop raising money or spreading the word about polio eradication,” Rotary Foundation Trustee John F. Germ told Rotary leaders at the International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA. “We can’t stop until our entire world is certified as polio-free.” The fundraising milestone was reached in response to $355 million in challenge grants awarded to The Rotary Foundation by the Gates Foundation. All funds have been earmarked to support polio immunization activities in affected countries where the vaccine-preventable disease continues to paralyze children. “In recognition of Rotary’s great work, and to inspire Rotarians in the future, the [Gates] foundation is committing an additional $50 million to extend our partnership,” said Jeff Raikes, chief executive officer of the Gates Foundation. “Rotary started the global fight against polio, and continues to set the tone for private fundraising, grassroots engagement, and maintaining polio at the top of the agenda with key policymakers.” Raikes also addressed Rotary leaders at the International Assembly. The new $50 million grant from the Gates Foundation is not a challenge grant. |
