Topic: Type 2 Diabetes Prevention – Thursday, February 23, 2012

Presenter: Kwesi Johnson started making a difference when he was just 12 years old by volunteering at basketball camp. He didn't stop there.

To this day, he continues to help young people - especially those who don't have every advantage - and works with his local church and recreation centre in Toronto organizing activities and holding mentoring workshops.

Ryerson University understands Kwesi's passion for reaching out to people in the community. That's why after graduating from the Child and Youth Care program he was awarded the prestigious Ryerson Gold Medal for his combination of outstanding academic achievements and contributions to community and university life.

He also received the province-wide Lincoln M. Alexander Award for his outstanding leadership in eliminating racial discrimination.

Kwesi is now in the process of completing his Master's Degree in Sociology in Education and sees himself as a future teacher or principal mentoring youth.

He has worked in various roles with Parkdale Golden Age Foundation and POINT (People and Organizations in North Toronto) for the past 5 years.

3.      Christmas party was a success, after everythingit has cost only $440 and that will be covered from the club’s running budget.

4.      President’s Ball and 60^thAnniversary is scheduled to celebrate on April 14 2012.  Thanks to Milo, our past president volunteerto organize the event, food, drinks, place etc. The rest of us can contributeby inviting our friends, family, colleagues and donation for silent auction.

5.      Board has suggested organizing 2 fundraising event before the president’s gala,
a)         Fun Game;   Dianne and Jim Moore, has volunteer toorganize this at the party room of their condo on Feb-17-2012 please respond tothe email that Kathy has sent yesterday.
b)         Food and Wine;   Minerva and Michael Bartello, has volunteerto organize this event; more information will follow as soon as they areavailable.

6.       R to R is back to square one, we are havinghard time finding the right location that suits for everyone and the theme. We arestill in a process of looking; information will be forwarded as soon as isavailable.

7.      As we all know we have a specialspeaker every week at the meeting on every Thursday. So we are in a process offilling up our calendar for this year, please let us know if you have anyonethat will be benefit  as a speaker for our club member or wise versa.

We have a very interesting speaker for tomorrow’s meeting. Marina Dessiatkina, is a member of Forest Hill Club and she is a great speaker as well. She is also the Trade Commissioner of the Republic of Sakha of the Russian federation of Canada. Marina is going to talk about the Trade and the Relations between Canada and republic of Sakha. (Yakutia)  Please join us tomorrow if you can.
