MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Posted by Gary Fletcher on Aug 18, 2011

ASmoky Hill will once again have it's annual Adopt-a-Class for Century Elementary School in August. Twenty or so of our Smoky Hill Rotarians will meet at a local Walmart to purchase school clothing for approximately 30 children. School supplies for these same chiildren has already been purchased and distributed. This annual event is a significant and memorable event for all concerned. "You Rotarians do not realize all that you have done," one of the mothers said a few years ago. Their family had been sitting around the kitchen table worried and discussing what they would have to give up to be able to buy the needed clothes and supplies for their children. That worry was removed for them and the many families that are assisted in this way. And, the feeling of accomplishment that the Rotarians get is just one of the many personal reasons that Smoky Hill members enjoy Rotary in our community.

scoutsAmong Smoky Hill Rotary Club's many contributions to the Aurora community is the sponsorship or "chartering" of Boy Scout Troop 641. The troop was founded by SHRC members in 1982, so the troop is celebrating its 29th anniversary this year. In addition to lending our club name, we provide financial support in the way of equipment and supplies, and it is the Club's responsibility through the Chartered Organization Representative to ensure that the Troop has qualified adult leadership. The Troop meets on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 PM at Timberline Elementary School in Aurora.

Among this year's highlights was a summer camp trip to Bear Lake Aquatics Base in Utah, which was attended by 17 boys and 7 leaders. The boys earned a total of 93 merit badges, several rank advancements and numerous other recognitions. Troop 641 was the winner of the camp spirit contest where troops earn points for participation in meetings, flag ceremonies, campfires, and maintaining a clean camp site. Troop 641 won the Troop Yell competition the first day and also conducted the camp flag ceremony Friday morning.
