Bremerton Rotary Club will celebrate the 73rd anniversary of its founding in 2014. Organized Oct. 31, 1941, it is the oldest Rotary Club in Kitsap County, Washington. The charter dinner was scheduled for Dec. 7, 1941, but had to be postponed when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Our club is composed of more than 100 business and professional men and women from a variety of vocations. We are dedicated to community and international service, and we also provide an opportunity for fellowship among the members.

Our club hosted a group of Rotarians June 22-24, 2014 from the Somerset area of southwestern England as part of a Rotary Friendship Exchange. The Rotarians from England visited  five clubs in District 5020, including our own. In September, a group of Rotarians from five District 5020 clubs  will visit District 1200  in England, including our treasurer, Dave Anderson and his wife Sharon. The English Rotarians were given a tour of Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park, the Bremerton waterfront on a 65 foot yacht, and a day of shopping and sight seeing in Seattle. Several club members hosted the English Rotarians in their homes. To read a thank-you letter click on MORE below.

Thanks to Bremerton Rotarians, all third graders in the Bremerton School District have a scholastic dictionary to call their own. Marking the 11th consecutive year, Rotarians handed out a total of 434 dictionaries in October 2013 at the six elementary schools in the district, bringing the total number of dictionaries given to date to more than 5,000. The children are challenged to look up a new word every day!

Bremerton Rotarians supported the AVID Program at Bremerton High School for the third year in 2013-14. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It targets students who would be the first in their families to attend college. Rotarians visit the high school to talk to AVID students about their own professions and invite them to tour their workplaces. They also serve as mentors, with pairs of Rotarians meeting with 3 to 5 students.

For the seventh consecutive year, Bremerton Rotarians and others read to kindergarteners in the Bremerton School District's six elementary schools once a week for nine weeks. Starting in mid-January, readers read in 25 kindergarten classrooms, including three Spanish immersion classrooms where our volunteers read in Spanish. Studies have shown that the more kindergarteners are read to, the better they will be prepared for learning to read and Bremerton’s test scores reflect that.

Each year, Bremerton Rotary Club holds its popular annual fundraiser, the Wild Game Dinner, at the Kitsap Golf & Country Club. The last one took place March 15, 2014. This popular event, featuring silent and live auctions and a dinner of wild game and exotic meats, helps support many of our charitable activities in the community. It has been held annually since 1985. A typical menu includes moose, elk, buffalo, venison, crab, oysters and baron of beef.

Each Christmas season, Bremerton Rotarians open their hearts and their wallets to make sure those less fortunate would experience the Christmas spirit.  Through our Christmas Angels program, we provide gifts to several needy local families, plus enough money to buy a holiday meal.  Rotarians serve as bell ringers for the Salvation Army, and then give donations in exchange for gag gifts at our last meeting before Christmas, raising nearly $7,000.
