Bremerton Rotary Club will celebrate the 73rd anniversary of its founding in 2014. Organized Oct. 31, 1941, it is the oldest Rotary Club in Kitsap County, Washington. The charter dinner was scheduled for Dec. 7, 1941, but had to be postponed when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Our club is composed of more than 100 business and professional men and women from a variety of vocations. We are dedicated to community and international service, and we also provide an opportunity for fellowship among the members.

Thanks to Bremerton Rotarians, all third graders in the Bremerton School District have a scholastic dictionary to call their own. Marking the 11th consecutive year, Rotarians handed out a total of 434 dictionaries in October 2013 at the six elementary schools in the district, bringing the total number of dictionaries given to date to more than 5,000. The children are challenged to look up a new word every day!

Bremerton Rotarians are supporting the AVID Program at Bremerton High School for the third year in 2013-14. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It targets students who would be the first in their families to attend college. Rotarians visit the high school to talk to AVID students about their own professions and invite them to tour their workplaces. They also serve as mentors, with pairs of Rotarians meeting with 3 to 5 students.

Bremerton Rotary Club will hold its popular annual fundraiser, the Wild Game Dinner, March 15, 2014 at the Kitsap Golf & Country Club. This popular event, featuring silent and live auctions and a dinner of wild game and exotic meats, helps support many of our charitable activities in the community. It has been held annually since 1985. A typical menu includes moose, elk, buffalo, venison, crab, oysters and baron of beef.

Bremerton Rotary is proud to sponsor the Bremerton Blackberry Festival, held each year over the Labor Day weekend. The Bremerton waterfront boardwalk comes alive with food booths, arts & crafts, music, clowns and children's activities. The 25th annual Bremerton Blackberry Festival is scheduled for Aug. 30-Sept. 1, 2014. Members of our club help organize the event and also staff the Rotary information booth, Seafood Booth, Berry Central (selling T-shirts and souvenirs), Blackberry Wine booth and Chalk on the Block contest. All proceeds our club receives from the event will be reinvested in the local community. For more information, visit the Blackberry Festival website.

For the 6th consecutive year, Bremerton Rotarians and others read to kindergarteners in the Bremerton School District's six elementary schools once a week for nine weeks, starting in January 2013.  We read to 22 kindergarten classrooms, including two in a Spanish immersion program where our volunteers read in Spanish. Studies have shown that the more kindergarteners are read to, the better they will be prepared for learning to read.

Led by base-clearing home runs by Flip Herndon and Glen Henrickson (the latter a Grand Salami!), the Bremerton Rotary softball team atoned for two earlier losses years ago, defeating East Bremerton 12-10 in an exciting contest at the Fairgrounds on June 22, 2010. Our team sealed the deal with six runs in the 5th inning, then held on as East Bremerton mounted a stiff rally in the bottom of the 7th. Ryan Rydalch (pictured at left) was the victorious manager.

Each Christmas season, Bremerton Rotarians open their hearts and their wallets tomake sure those less fortunate would experience the Christmas spirit.  Through our Christmas Angels program, we provide gifts to several needy local families, plus enough money to buy a holiday meal.  Rotarians take gift tags off a Giving Tree and purchase individual gifts.

In 1988, Rotary International committed to the eradication of polio. At that time, 350,000 children contracted the disease annually. Since then, Rotarians worldwide have galvanized governments, provided hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours and raised some $600 million to make eradication a reality.
