The Backyard Games is a day-long recreational sports competition intended for teams of seven or more individuals, each of whom will participate in one or two sporting events. Morning events include bocce, "around the world" (basketball shooting) and golf chipping; afternoon events include cornhole, "Kan Jam" (frisbee), and "Over the Line" (modified softball). Lunch and dinner will be provided, together with live entertainment by Run Avril Run to close out the evening!
Registration of a 7-person team is $525 ($75/person) by June 22; additional people can be added to a team for $75/person. Each team member receives a Backyard Games t-shirt and access to all events. Spectators are welcome and may purchase lunch and dinner tickets. All proceeds will benefit local projects of the Rotary Club of Solon, including improvements at the Solon Center for the Arts and the Solon Community Park, as well as local hunger relief projects. | | Posted by Matthew Liebson on May 22, 2012 Rob Previte was a guest on "Rotary Radio" [WELW, 1330 A.M.] yesterday, talking about the Rotary Club of Solon and the upcoming Backyard Games!

Solon High School senior Ashwin Rane was not only the winner of the Rotary Club of Solon's locally sponsored Four Way Speech Contest, but also the winner of the District competition held in Aurora (featuring the winners of each club's local contest.) Congratulations Ashwin!
Video of his speech from the District contest can be found here on YouTube! | | Posted by Matthew Liebson on Apr 10, 2012 The Rotary Club of Solon is partnering with the Solon Center of the Arts to raise funds for construction of an outdoor courtyard and performance stage this summer at SCA's facility at the intersection of SOM Center and Bainbridge in the heart of Solon!
You, too, can be a part of this project. Your $100 donation includes a paver brick - with text of your selection - that will be a permanent part of the courtyard! Larger pavers, and special "founder squares" made of limestone and granite, are also available. You can use this form to make your contribution! | | Posted by Matthew Liebson on Apr 05, 2012 The Rotary Club of Solon has inducted six new members since the beginning of 2012! The most recent inductee is Danielle Rose, the Publisher of the Solon Spotlight, shown here with club President Kevin Cox and past president Rob Previte. Other recent inductees include John Drew, Randy Misch, Garry Cramer, Brandon Miller, and Jason Tercek. | | Posted by Matthew Liebson on Mar 13, 2012 The Rotary Club of Solon held its annual “Four Way Test Speech Contest” on March 7. Four Solon High School students (identified with the assistance of Solon High School Speech and Debate coach Jennifer Moore) competed, using Rotary’s “Four Way Test” to examine an ethical dilemma. Speeches ranged from examining the Four-Way Test through its own lens (Zach Schwartz); the state of modern political discourse (Ashwin Rane), approaches to education (Liz Eder), and pride and entitlement (Kathy Zhang). After difficult deliberations by judges Garry Cramer (General Manager, Signature of Solon), Phil Weiss (Assistant District Governor, Rotary District 6630), and Danielle Rose (Publisher, Solon Spotlight), Ashwin Rane was selected as the winner from among the excellent speeches. Ashwin will represent the Rotary Club of Solon at the upcoming District Four-Way Test Speech Contest in Aurora on March 31; all contestants were awarded cash prizes for their participation. | | Posted by Matthew Liebson The Rotary Club of Solon has announced Rosemary Reid as its student of the month for February 2012. Rosemary, a Solon Middle School eighth grader, is described as “striving for excellence in everything she does” and as a “wonderful student” who successfully takes advanced course work in math, science, and languages and shows the qualities of a “natural leader who leads by example.” In addition to her academic achievements, Rosemary is a talented singer who participates in Solon School’s Mixed Ensemble and Chamber Ensemble, serves on the Community Service Committee of the Student Counsel, and plays on the Middle School’s girls’ basketball team. Rosemary is also active in the community, and it was said that “if there is a cause to support, she is usually first in line to sign up!” She was a girl scout for 8 years, has volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and in a local soup kitchen and church, and has participated in Relay for Life. In brief comments to the Rotary Club, Rosemary thanked her parents, her brothers, and her teachers for "steering her in the right direction" and helping her to make the right decisions. She also said that despite a sometimes overwhelming schedule, she tries to always stay involved in the community, and she's happy to be in a community like Solon that offers so many opportunities for community service. | | Posted by Matthew Liebson on Jan 05, 2012 The Rotary Club of Solon is holding "A Night at the Races" at the Solon Community Center the evening of February 4, 2012! $35/person will include a buffet dinner, beer, soft drinks and mixers. Bring your own wine and liquor! The event, to be held from 6pm to 11pm, will feature simulated horse racing, wagering opportunities, and raffles, including Super Bowl "square" boards. Rotary Club of Solon President Kevin Cox stated that he was "pleased to have a chance to honor those who run to trouble, rather than away from it, when we need them." Solon Mayor Susan Drucker was pleased for the opportunity to honor “people who deserve it” and to recognize city employees for doing “what they do every day” and making it their passion. Fire Department Chief William Shaw announced that Paramedic/Firefighter Tom Green was selected as this year's Fireman of the Year award. Green was described as a “go to guy” and “consumate professional” who can work through the toughest of problems. Police Chief Christopher Viland awarded the Policeman of the Year award to Patrolman Scott McElroy for a yearlong series of achievements that “demonstrate how good he is at his job," including arrests of drunken driving suspects and investigatory work in robbery and breaking and entering cases. Matt, a Solon High School freshman, is already taking advanced classes and active in school activities, including the yearbook club and Solon High School’s chess club, and also serves as a Guidance Office aide. He is described as “very reliable, polite and helpful.” Matt is also active in the community, and volunteers weekly at the Montefiore Nursing Home in Beachwood, visiting with residents, serving food, and translating for Russian-speaking residents. He also has volunteered at a retirement community in Chagrin Falls. His goal is to make life easier for people in need, and in particular to help people be able to walk after injuries. Matt plans a pre-med curriculum and ultimately to become an orthopedic surgeon. In comments to the Club after receiving the award, Matt stated that he was “greatly honored and privileged” to receive the award, thanked his parents and others for their constant encouragement, and stated his hope to “improve the world one minute at a time, one person at a time.” | | Posted by Scott McRill on Nov 23, 2011 In keeping with its local mission of “Enhancing the Minds and Bodies of Our Children,” the Rotary Club of Solon, in partnership with Heinen's, participated in a service project to provide much-needed groceries to 10 families this Thanksgiving season. "Helping those less fortunate than we are, especially during this season of giving thanks, is what the Rotary is all about," said Kevin Cox, President of the Rotary Club of Solon. Five members of the Rotary Club of Solon, with assistance from their sons, gathered at the Heinen's in Bainbridge on Wednesday, November 23rd, to coordinate efforts to hand-deliver eight bags of groceries to each of ten different Geauga County families. "It felt great to see how happy the family was when we knocked on their door and gave them food so they could enjoy Thanksgiving. I want to do this again sometime soon," said Tyler McRill, a 7th grade student at Solon Middle School. The Rotary Club of Solon next plans to “adopt” three Solon-area families for the holidays.
