Peru Water Project - Richard Hetzel update

We were able to distribute 250 water filters.  Many of the families that received these water filters had never tasted clean water before that day.  The area in which we distributed the filters has a population of 1.2 million.  This is just one outlying area of Lima, Peru.  The name of the area is San Juan de Lurigancho.  The families that received the filters have children that are in a childcare center run by AMG International.  I am a Short Term Mission Leader with AMG International, so I have seen these families for many years.  They have stories about how sick they get due to parasites and contaminates in the water.  We were able to order water filters and get them shipped to the childcare center for just under $25 per filter.  Each filter lasts for 5 years.  Clean water, therefore, only costs $5 per year!  The problem is that even though the filters are just a little more expensive when bought as a single unit, these people cannot afford them.  They cannot even afford them at the discount rate we received.  Because of these filters, over 225 children and their parents will receive clean water for 5 years!

On Saturday, August 13, 17 Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Chattanooga Hamilton Place turned out for a service project at the Chattanooga Area Food Bank. This represents over 20% of our Club. Along with friends and family, we had 38 volunteers! We packed over 400 boxes of food and sack packs, which will be sent home with underprivileged children on Fridays to ensure they have adequate food on the weekend. Our club also donated $500.00 to the sack pack program. It was a great experience, and a good time was had by all!

Last week several of our club went to the airport to welcome Abel Nagy to Chattanooga.  Oh what a night as the song goes!  The Rotary Club of Chattanooga Hamilton Place really knows how to make someone feel welcome!  Vicki & Dan, Charles D., Rick C., Ray F. Joe M. & family, Brigette & Caroline and friends, David & Taylor and myself.

As you can see from the pictures we had a great time and after the airport we moved on to Logan's Restaurant and Nana's Custard for our first "American" food experiences.
This morning the boys slept until almost 10a, Taylor made Abel cinnamon rolls, we filled out school paperwork and now the boys are swimming.  We are off to Soddy-Daisy High School this afternoon to get registered for school.

By the way Hungary was a Communist country untl 1989 so Abel's parents grew up quite a bit differently than the rest of us.  It it amazng to learn of the parallels between our countries however the contrasts are starkly apparent.  For example no one owns (or can own) guns in Hungary however 16 year olds can drink Jack Daniels in pubs!  I had to explain what a dry county was!!

Many thanks to those who came to the airport especially Caroline Thurman and her friends Bianca and Peyton who really lit the fire of fun for all of us!

We have a weekend of shopping and touring planned as we get ready for school.  Friday night Taylor and Abel will tour downtown and the teens are gathering at Cheeseburger Cheeseburger around 7p for dinner.
