Club Members Hear Thunder

Image
Members enjoyed an informative presentation by Paul Carro, a member of Rolling Thunder, Inc., at the weekly meeting on May 9 at Giovanna's Restaurant.

Paul spoke about the plight of our service women and men who are Prisoners of War or Missing in Action. In particular, he encouraged members and friends to contact our Senators and Representatives about Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, America's only known POW in Afghanistan. Captured by the Taliban in June, 2009, Sgt. Bergdahl is believed to be held in Pakistan. Rolling Thunder advocates for POW/MIA service women and men, and actively seeks the U.S. governments cooperation in achieving freedom for Sgt. Bergdahl in any discussions with the Taliban.

Rolling Thunder sponsors a weekend trip to Washington, D.C. each year to bring attention to POW/MIA service people and to the needs of veterans from all wars and conflicts. The trip is a cavalcade of motorcycles and other vehicles with a program near the Korean Memorial on Sunday, May 27. More information is available on Rolling Thunder's website, www.rollingthunder1.com or by clicking here.

Collecting Food

The Interact Club is hosting the Backpacks for Children Program at NPHS.  This program collects food to put into backpacks that are given to children who do not have meals over the weekend. Students and teachers are asked to donate simple items such as mac’n’cheese or small cereal boxes.  Boxes for donations are in every high school homeroom, and each homeroom teacher has a complete list of items suitable for the project.

Yamna Anwar Recognized
for her
Academic Achievment

The top ten seniors at North Plainfield High School are honored at a dinner every year.  Each of the seniors is allowed to bring the one teacher who was most influential to his or her accomplishment. Yamna Anwar chose her Interact Club Advisor, Alexandra Pereira, as her guest.

Yamna has been a tireless worker for the Interact Club, dedicated to its purposes and ideals, and always ready to participate in club activities.  She has been recognized by the Rotary Club as a Student of the Month for her academic and service accomplishments.

Yamna has been accepted at Harvard University on a full scholarship, where she will be a pre-med student. We offer her our heartfelt congratulations and thank her for being a good friend to Rotary.

You had blood, you gave blood!

The Interact Club at North Plainfield High School and the American Red Cross Blood Drive on April 13 collected 77 pints of blood.  These 77 pints are equivalent to helping 231 people (each pint can help three people).
Thank you from Interact to all who came out!

Final Report
2011 Dictionary Project

Club members handed out dictionaries to every third grade student in Plainfield and in North Plainfield, including the three charter schools in Plainfield.

A total of 904 English dictionaries and 218 Spanish/English dictionaries were distributed at sixteen elementary and charter schools by teams of Rotarians.

We thank the Plainfield Foundation and Rotary District 7510 for grants received to help pay the $2,018 cost of the dictionaries.

The Plainfield Music Store
was founded in 1951 by Irving Rydberg. Over the years, Mr. Rydberg assembled a vast resource and archive of sheet music from many publishers which became a favorite source for Plainfield and regional musical connoisseurs.
