| Posted by Peter Jando on Aug 09, 2011 For over 50 years, the Rotary Club of Vancouver South has organized an annual trip to Penticton for foreign students attending UBC. Through International House at UBC, co-founded by our club, 25 foreign students are chosen to attend this weekend getaway. Our members volunteer as drivers, taking the young adults up to the Okanagan usually on the third Friday of September, introducing them to members of the Penticton Rotary Club who will billet them, and then driving them back to UBC on Sunday. In the meantime, the Penticton club arranges a full day of site-seeing and a gala dinner on Saturday night. | | Posted by Michael Cowhig on Aug 25, 2011 This was a talk by Al Cheshire, Past Club President and Past District Governor on our 60th President Instalation Dinner June 9, 2007. The charter date for the Rotary Club of Vancouver South was May 2nd, 1947 and was chartered as the Rotary Club of Marpole R.I. #6576 District 101 (to become Dist. 504 in 1957) with 34 members. It was the 5th Rotary Club in B.C. (others were P.G., New West and Prince Rupert) but we were the 2nd in Vancouver. The club was sponsored by the R/C of Vancouver upon a proposal by Nat Bailey, Jack Diamond and Reg Ashley. | | Posted by Grant Yao The South Vancouver Rotary Club sponsored Michelle Pham, a Grade 11 student at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary school on a trip to Encounters with Canada - a national conference and forum.
| | Posted by Michael Cowhig Although the Rotary Club of Vancouver South contributes greatly to the local community, individually we also try to spread our intiative to a global scale. A good way to capture this attitude is, "Think globally, act locally." Past President and PDG David Ker and his wife Lis started making donations to Rotary Foundation in 1999 to set up a fund which uses the fund earnings to provide one scholarship each year for students from Novosibirsk and Barnaul in Siberia, Russia to attend one term in the business/economics department at BCIT in Burnaby. |
