ImageSergio Sanchez was our guest speaker this past week. KURV is the Valley’s News, Weather & Talk Station and Sergio serves as their anchor and talk show host.  He is originally from McAllen, TX.  He started his presentation by describing the positive impact his father had on his childhood days. He went on to give us a summary of the radio station – who they are and the programs that they host. Sergio can be heard on Saturday mornings from 9 AM to 11 AM as he hosts the live talk show with open phones.  Their complete daily schedule along with other information can be found on the website at www.kurv.com.  He closed by answering questions from the floor.

ImageJulian Alvarez was our guest speaker 2 weeks ago.  Julian is a Rotarian with the North Harlingen Rotary Club and currently serves as the President & CEO of the Rio Grande Valley Partnership.  His presentation gave an overview of who they are, their history and plans for future.  They are a Chamber of Commerce for the whole Valley who fosters the relationships and coordinates the programs that advance the regional economic development.  Unlike local chambers, they do not receive any public funds, but rely solely on the support of Valley Businesses for its operational expenses.  This was a very informative program and he closed by answering questions.

ImageLeslie Bowers was our guest speaker this past week.  She is the business manager at the Harlingen office of The International Cat Association, which is also their world headquarters office. The first item on their mission statement is to encourage their members to be caring, responsible owners and breeders of cats; and to work together to promote the preservation of pedigreed cats plus the health and welfare of all domestic cats.  According to Leslie, there are 56 championship breeds of cats.  Visit their website at www.tica.org for more information about the organization and their various activities around the world

ImageThe Club's inaugural Adopt-a-Highway Cleanup on Loop 499 in Harlingen on Saturday morning was a smashing success!  Pictured here are club members Bill Peacock and Chris Bartnesky under our sign in front of Cardenas Motors.  Many Rotarians and Interact participated and were treated to a hamburger cook out from our friends at Marine Military Academy on completion. Special thanks to Rotarian Eddie Bartnesky for spearheading the winning project!  We look forward to keeping this stretch of highway spic-n-span in the future!

ImageFrank Esparza was our guest speaker at the last meeting.  He currently serves as the Center Director for the Harlingen office.  Their territory includes the 4 county area of Cameron, Willacy, Hidalgo and Starr.  His presentation included a video about the history of the organization and their plans & goals.  Local hospitals depend on United Blood Services to supply blood when needed. In order to accomplish this, they hold blood drives at various locations in the community.  Individuals are strongly encouraged to donate blood on a regular basis.  Anyone interested in donating should contact them at www.unitedbloodservices.org
