Brian Weed was born and raised in Juneau Alaska. During his 4th grade year, a class field trip to Skagway with his teacher Kathleen O’Daniel, initiated his interest in mines and the Alaska gold rush history. In his early teen years during summer breaks, Brian continued to develop his sense for adventure by being able to explore Douglas Island, tagging along with his father who worked as a civil engineer for the Department of Transportation in Douglas.

Over the years, Brian has had the experiences of being a volunteer firefighter, participated in the white water rescue, assisted the Juneau mountain rescue team in searches, and has had specialized training in confined spaces and survival techniques. To date he has visited over 250 historic sites just In the Juneau area documenting them via GPS information, written logs and photographic records. He is currently authoring two books on the history of mining in Juneau, one encompassing what the mines look like today with a brief history of each and second, a hiking guide with GPS coordinates and trail information to provide people a way to access the local mining ruins and relics themselves.

Hello Glacier Valley Rotary Club,

I have been in Thailand for about two weeks and I have already have had an experience of a lifetime. I have visited Bangkok, ridden a tuk- tuk (motorcycle), seen the most beautiful Buddha statue in Thailand, and have visited an amazing national park.
Last week I started high school and received the most wonderful welcome. The principal gave me a bouquet of flowers and I was able to introduce myself to the entire school. All the students are extremely nice and always ask to take pictures with me! Some of the classes I am taking here are Thai dancing, thai cooking, Chinese, and Thai language. I just wanted to thank you again for giving me this amazing opportunity.

From Fundee (my Thai name which means "sweet dreams")

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge held to honor Downtown Juneau Rotarian Lloyd Johnson who passed away from this disease last week. The event intended to not only honor Loyd, but to raise money to help with the effort to find a cure for this terrible disease. GVR's Colleen Sullivan and Sharon Burns took the plunge!

Hi Fellow Cruisers, your ship will come in, but if you don't act fast, you won't be able to climb aboard! We have only a couple of spaces remaining available.  The luncheon will be on board the Celebrity Solstice this year, Sept 18th.  Our regular meeting on Sept 17th will be CANCELED for that week, and instead, those that have signed up will wine and dine in style at the beautiful harbor in SUNNY downtown Juneau!  Tickets are $30.  Please contact Erin Hester ASAP, as I said there's only a couple of tickets left.
