Dear Friend,

Would you like every poor child from the Indonesian island of Nusa Penida to have the chance of a full high school education and maybe a college or university education thereafter in order to lift them and their families out of poverty?

Did you know that many children from poor families on Nusa Penida are forced to leave school early, as their families cannot afford to pay the school fees.

There is also little hope for these children after leaving school early, as they are limited to very basic manual work, or to work in a small shop or warung (restaurant).

This is where the Helen E. Newman Scholarship   Fund (“HENSF”) run by the Rotary Club of Bali Seminyak kicks in, as we support these children through their second and third grades of high school and if they want, and their parents allow, through tertiary education also.

This year all our high school students graduated and we have already interviewed the new intake. All new intake students had high aspirations of going on to tertiary education after graduating.

Sadly, only one of this year’s HENSF high school graduates went on to college, as the other student backed out at the last moment. (It is likely that he, like most of the other high school graduates this year, was forced to go out to work in order to support his family).

Presently the HENSF has only twenty students studying at high school due to money constraints and we would very much like to increase this number, but to do this we need funds. Our Rotary club on its part undertakes fundraising activities every year in order to provide for the students, but this on its own is not enough.

We are therefore appealing to you for your kind help, as we know this a matter that is very close to your heart, and your help can make real a difference to the lives of these children.

For your information, an HENSF high school scholarship costs US$260 per annum, per student, and an HENSF tertiary education scholarship costs between US$2,000 and US$4,000 per annum, per student, depending on the tertiary institution chosen.

If you are not able to donate a full scholarship, then please consider making a contribution towards one, as this will also help tremendously.

Thank you so much for supporting this worthy cause.

Best wishes,

Doris Angst Sommer,

President 2014-2015

WELCOME Rotarians and Friends!

The Rotary Club of Bali Seminyak (D3420 Indonesia), sends you greetings from Paradise. We are the ONLY English speaking Club in the Kuta area (Tuban/Legian/Seminyak/Kerobokan). Our Club meets every Wednesday ,however, on the LAST Wednesday of every Month, we go on a Vocational Tour in the late afternoon followed by an evening Fellowship dinner. Please contact our 'Club Secretary' for the times/locations/directions.

We also meet on every second Monday of the month in the evening for Fellowship from 18:00 - 19:30 at the beach of the Anantara Seminyak hotel for a social cocktail session. This evening is a great opportunity for you to learn more about Rotary, the projects and activities the RCBS has been doing here in Seminyak and around Indonesia and to meet some new people. Please come along to this very relaxing beach resort and enjoy a beautiful sunset with us.

Our Club was chartered on 14 May 2002 and consists primarily of expatriates living in the Kuta area. A majority of the members work directly or indirectly in the Tourism Industry, e.g. hotel management, restaurants, property management, marketing, diving, real estate rentals, and training. Other classifications include; architecture, education, export, steel brokerage, finance management, medicine, and transportation.

The members, during the past twelve years, have been very active in a wide range of Projects here in Bali and around Indonesia, e. g. Cleft Lip/Palate Operations, Elementary School Library, Leprosy Detection and Eradication (MG), Malaria Eradication (MG), Microcredit for Women, provision of 65 goats to the poor farmers of Nusa Penida for breeding, Retirement Home, High School & University Scholarships / Student Loans, Water Filters (MG), Water Wells (MG), Women's Vocational Training (MG), and many more. For further information about our Club Projects or to make a Donation, please send me an email.

Visiting Rotarians, if you can take some time away from all that RESTING that you are doing, please drop by (program calendar) and spend a relaxing, humorous luncheon with our members. We'd enjoy making you feel 'extra' welcome in Paradise.
