Research shows that potential tourists still are not aware of New Mexico as a travel destination or if they are they think of dry deserted desert. The Department counters this with a group of ads giving a "true" impression of New Mexico. Governor Martinez and the Legislature have been very supportive and the advertising budget is higher than it has ever been. The substantial return on investment means that our state citizens have to pay around $800 less in tax because of the spending by out-of-state tourists. The Department is encouraging New Mexicans to explore in-state destinations not only to keep precious dollars here but to realize the tremendous attractions in our own back yard.

We had over 450 volunteers including 100 volunteers from rotary which included representatives from at least 8 different rotary clubs and 2 interact clubs. District governor Lonnie is already signed up for next year.
The Car Show was a huge draw with thousands of people lining the downtown streets to see the gorgeous cars. The bandstand was jamming from 8 am until almost 3:00 pm with people glued to their chairs
The vendors were very happy and we have heard from several it was very successful for them and we already have commitments for next year.

District Governor Lonnie Leslie shared this year's Rotary theme, Light Up Rotary! Introduced by boyhood friend Past District Governor Dick Jones, Lonnie reviewed his DG experience to date, told about what keeps him excited about Rotary and invited club members to attend District Conference in Clovis and what promises to be some unique experiences. A tour of the Norman Petty studio, preserved as it was when Buddy Holly recorded there and a tour of Cannon AFB with its new special operations mission are on tap. Wonder what goes with the motto, "You can run but you will only die tired!"? The opportunity to meet Lonnie and Ardeth added to everyone's Rotary perspective.

Shall we be subjecting ourselves to the charge of unpractical optimism if we venture to hope that The Rotarian will some day be of interest to the public in general?
