I could not be more amazed at how much hard work has paid off, how much teamwork and collaboration has gone into getting this group started and going, and how unbelievably blessed I am personally for getting to know so many different people through such an amazing organization. At the end of the day I realize that someone ha...d a great idea, the idea to start a service group that worked with networking people globally, and they too worked hard to start their group. I imagine as it grew larger and larger they began to see their hard work and dreams turn into reality and now so many here at the UO are being impacted by this one persons dream. All of it really just "awe's" me. The best part being that this persons dream led to us, a group of altruistic dedicated students, to put on a fundraiser to help end poilio, and so sit those coins that will directly alter the lives of several children somewhere in the world so they too can have an impact in some way in the future. Pictured left to right: Kevin Schabler (student), Mr. Steve Merry (teacher), Riley Burt (student), Bradey Lund (winner), and Rotarians Cindy Behrsin and Rod Riopel. Over $3500 was raised by the collaborative efforts of St. Thomas Aquinas High School and the Kenora Rotary Club in the recent Cody Bland Memorial Raffle. The grand prize, an ice shack built by Steve Merry's Construction class, was won by Brad and Bradey Lund. All proceeds of the raffle are allocated to the improvement of the Basketball Courts at the Kenora Recreation Centre. The young Saints basketball player spent countless hours on the outdoor courts and often lamented the disrepair of the surface. Cody's family and friends are eager to see the improvements completed in his memory. | | Posted by Debra LeMaistre on Mar 05, 2012 Welcome!

Southeastern Turkey was rocked by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake on Oct. 23rd with the epicenter located north of the city of Van. When I arrived in Van about 2 weeks later to relieve the first ShelterBox Response Team, the needs of the city had been pretty well met, so our team began concentrating on distributing shelterBoxes to the small rural villages north of Van.
Things quickly changed when the second earthquake hit on Nov. 9th.. We were having a late dinner in a hotel on the outskirts of Van when the building began to shake violently; everyone ran for the doors. We were fortunate that the hotel is new and was built to higher construction standards. There was superficial damage but, structurally the building withstood the 5.6 quake. This was a lower Richter scale rating than the earlier earthquake, but the epicenter was much closer to Van and many buildings had been weakened by the first earthquake; consequently the main city experience severe damage. | | Posted by Debra LeMaistre on Nov 21, 2011

Accompanying them on their trip were 2 Canadian Rotary Collaboration for International Development (CRCID) Program Officers, who worked with them for 2 weeks, Rotarian Jim Coulter, a retired high school principal from Watrous, SK for 4 weeks, and Kenora Rotarian John Berringer and Rowena Berringe for 3 weeks. In all, over 30 schools were visited. Some of these schools were completed Ripple Effect projects, 3 holding school inaugurations during the group's visit, some projects were under construction and at varios stages of completion, and some schools visited were for the purpose of gaining information for future projects. A highlight of the trip for the LeMaistres and Berrigers was a trip up into the Northern Highlands to visit S an Miguelito School in Santa Eulalia, Huehuetenango. The Rotary Club of Kenora is the Lead Club, partnering with Rotary Clubs of Gimli, Dundas Valley Sunrise, and Brandon, as well as a grant from D5550 World Community Service and CRCID. This project will see a new school built. comprising of 6 classrooms, a kitchen and washroms. The school being replaced was a small wooden shack with a dirt floor, no windows and room dividers made from bed sheets. Classes were also held in a private home and in a damp, dark, moldy church basement. Good progress has been made on Phase 1 which is the construction of 5 classrooms. The area has received huge amounts of rain over the past several months, but despite the rain and the mud, the employees and volunteers have been working hard. The classrooms will be completed in plenty of time for the re-opening of school in mid January. | | Posted by Debra LeMaistre on Sep 12, 2011 A donation of $500 was made to the Lake of the Woods Concert Group. The Lake of the Woods Concert Group has been offering a professional series of concerts to the City of Kenora and surrounding area for over 40 years.
