 (1) One of the obligations and responsibilities of Rotary club members is the prompt payment of club dues.

According to the Rotary Manual of Procedure, Rotary members have 30 days from the due date (either July 1 or January 1 - or both) to make good on their club dues.  After that time, the member shall be notified in writing by the secretary of the club.

The member will have 10 days from the date of notification to pay the club dues,  or the club may take steps to terminate the membership of the said member.  The steps taken are at the discretion of the Rotary Club board of directors.

Reinstatement. The board may reinstate the former member to membership upon the former member’s petition and payment of all indebtedness to this club.

(2) Another important obligation and responsibility is regular attendance.

Unless otherwise excused by the board for good and sufficient reason or pursuant to article 9, sections 3 or 4, each member who fails to attend or make up four consecutive regular meetings shall be informed by the board that the member’s non-attendance may be considered a request to terminate membership in this club. Thereafter, the board, by a majority vote, may terminate the member’s membership.

Experience the Passion of Rotary

History was made in 2010, when Rotarians of Rotary International District 7020 elected its first BVI Rotarian, Vance Lewis, to serve as its 2012 -2013 District Governor.

It marks the countdown to the 2013 District 7020 Conference and continues to be a moment of pride for all Rotarians of the British Virgin Islands.

In May 2013, history will again be made when the British Virgin Islands hosts the District 7020 Conference for the first time. This long-awaited event will continue in the rich Rotary tradition of bringing Rotarians together to discuss Rotary business and to build stronger Rotary bonds through fellowship. Over 500 Rotarians from across District 7020 will experience the passion of Rotary.

The new Rotary International theme for 2013-14 with RI President for 2013-14, Ron Burton from the USA,  is Engage Rotary, change Lives!

Why are you a Rotarian?

Rotarian Juanita from Rotary Club of Eleuthera writes:

Well Rotary means a lot to me.  This is an avenue where I can join forces with other like-minded individuals to make a difference - .offer hope, touch people tangibly, bring about a change of mindset and ideals - not just talk but actually DO things to make a community better.

I'm far from where I need to be, but over the past three years, I've been challenged to get up off my butt and get busy doing!

What does "Service above Self" mean to you?

I actually feel that we can do it!!!! You Rotarians inspire me because together we can get things done.  Service above self means going the extra mile, even when I don't feel like it.

How can you get more involved?

I can get more involved with the service projects.  Most of them happen on Saturdays when I work, so I'm going to have to find a way to get involved in more projects this Rotary year.

Dear fellow Rotarians,

The year 2012 is nearly gone, and we have reached the midpoint of this Rotary year. It is time to take stock of the goals we have set for ourselves, and the progress we have made toward them. Are we on track to achieve what we set out to accomplish?

July 2012

Our goals for the year

Accepting the leadership of The Rotary Foundation after my predecessors – in particular, Past RI President Bill Boyd – did such a great job is a challenge. Oh, it’s not that I don’t know about the job. You can’t have been a Rotarian for 50 years without knowing and loving the work that our Foundation has done, is doing, and will do.

I know it all comes down to three things: raising money, investing money wisely, and spending money effectively. However, if the trustees and I are to have a truly significant year, we must have a plan, and every district, club, and individual Rotarian needs to be part of that plan.

We have five goals:

1. Eradicate polio.

2. Train districts and clubs for the global launch of the Future Vision Plan on 1 July 2013.

3. Assist RI President Sakuji Tanaka in his quest to achieve Peace Through Service. The successful projects and programs of our Foundation are what will bring about that peace.

4. Encourage every Rotarian and every club in the world to become immensely proud of our Foundation by giving something to the Annual Fund. The amount isn’t as important as the giving, but by setting a reasonable target of at least an average of US$100 per member, we will see our annual giving and our service grow to record levels.

5. Ensure that districts and clubs introduce stewardship policies that will complement the opportunities they will have to decide on and undertake humanitarian projects under the Future Vision Plan. This will make Rotary more visible and more attractive to members.

I know these goals may be easy for some and quite challenging for others, but accepted with enthusiasm and confidence, they can only, in the words of Past RI President Ray Klinginsmith, make Rotary bigger, better, and bolder.

As part of the Rotary Group Study Exchange (GSE) program, a team of five young professional visited Anguilla for the weekend of March 10.  The GSE program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for business people and professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers.  Rotarians in the host area provide for meals, lodging, and group travel within their district.

Supported by Rotary Clubs in Devon, England (Rotary District 1170), the team is making their trip to the Caribbean (Rotary District 7020) as the return portion of the Group Study Exchange that began last year.  In 2011, a team from St. Maarten, St. Barth’s, and Anguilla visited Devon, England, to learn about hospitality in that part of the world.

Are most of the grants in both categories "matching" grants?  Can you do a matching grant with the DDF?

The two grant types are district grants and global grants.

A district grant is a block grant awarded to a district annually. The district administers the activities carried out with these funds.

A global grant is applied for by a host and international sponsor for an activity relating to an area of focus with a sustainability component. Global grant funding includes cash contributions, DDF contributions, and an award (or “match”) from the World Fund at TRF.

The minimum of $15000 input from a club for a global grant?  Is that right?

The minimum award amount from the World Fund for a global grant, regardless of activity type, is US$15,000, which results in a minimum total financing of $30,000.

The World Fund award is based on a 100 percent match of DDF ($1.00:$1.00) or a 50 percent match of cash contributions ($0.50:$1.00).

Examples of global grant financing:

DDF contribution: $15,000
TRF World Fund match: $15,000
Total: $30,000

or

Cash contribution: $30,000
TRF World Fund match: $15,000
Total: $45,0000

Or

DDF contribution: $10,000
Cash contribution: $10,000
TRF World Fund match: $15,000 ($10,000 + $5,000)
Total: $35,000

At Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington, D.C., stands a memorial to the Seabees, formally known as the U.S. Naval Construction Force. An inscription reads, “With willing hearts and skillful hands, the difficult we do at once; the impossible takes a bit longer.”

CANADIANS DONATE 5 DEFIBRILLATORS TO ANGUILLA HEALTH

The donation of five defibrillators from the West Parry Sound Health Centre, located in Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada, is now complete.  Rotarian Karen Cox, from Parry Sound, arrived on the island in early Janury for her first visit to Anguilla, and she brought with her the fifth defibrillator.  Four other units arrived on the island in November last fall.

Good morning.

It is a great honor to be here, standing before all of you: our new district governors for the 2012-13 Rotary year.

Rotary has been at the center of my life for many years. I did not know it at the time, but the day I joined Rotary in 1975 was the day I set my first step on the path to a different future. Before I joined Rotary, my view of the world was narrow. I was the fourth of eight children. We were poor, and so was nearly everyone we knew. I had never met anyone who was not Japanese.

The concept of peace is one that differs among people and cultures. It may mean personal tranquility, happiness in the family, and a sense of inner contentment — or it may mean a situation of safety where basic human needs are met. However we define peace, it is a goal that can be achieved through service.

Sakuji Tanaka, a member of the Rotary Club of Yashio, Saitama, Japan, was elected president of Rotary International for 2012-13 by delegates during the fourth plenary session at the 2011 RI Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Watch a video highlight from the plenary, which includes a clip of Tanaka's speech, or download his speech

"It is my honor to accept the nomination to serve as president of Rotary International," said Tanaka. "Since I joined Rotary, I have embraced every new challenge of Rotary service. To me, challenge is a very important word. It inspires us. It also helps us to be and to do our best. It allows us to bring out our fullest potential."

Welcome!

As a new member, or even as an older, more experienced Rotarian,  you'll get a chance to become more involved in your community and to provide aid to other parts of the world through the opportunities that your Rotary club and Rotary International offer.

Learn more about Rotary by reading the New Member Bulletin. Also, please take a minute to visit Member Access to verify that RI has the correct information for you.

Longtime Rotarians agree that involvement is key to getting the most out of membership.

Volunteer to serve on a committee that meets your interests, to be a GREETER for weekly club meetings, or to join a service project team. These activities will help you get to know your fellow club members and better understand the work of Rotary.
