Image  Welcome to Sunrise Rotary!     Image

If you are looking for a group of fun loving and hardworking professionals who care about their fellow Rotarians and their community, then Sunrise Rotary is for you.  Sunrise is small enough to really get to know one another, but big enough to accomplish a lot for our community and beyond.  We also have a lot of fun along the way.  We meet at Elmcrest Country Club (1000 36th St NE Cedar Rapids) Thursday at 7:00.  Come Join Us!

Speakers-Programs

I encourage you to look to right of this web page at the lineup of speakers we have scheduled in the coming months.  You will find speakers who are leaders of our community, from local companies, non-profits and public institutions presenting programs that cover a wide variety of topics that we hope you will find entertaining, educational and inspirational.  We also schedule “off campus” tours of businesses, non-profits and new building projects several times a year taking advantage of our smaller sized club.

Service

One of the most important aspects of Rotary is the official motto of Rotary “Service above self.”  Sunrise Rotary prides itself in the many ways we fulfill this motto.

Today Sunrise celebrated accomplishments in this Rotary Year, new milestones, new achievements and thanking special Rotarians for their service.   See details in this file: Accomplishments

Our 2013-2014 Rotarian of the Year is Theresa Michelson!  Theresa stepped up and energetically supported many programs through the year, and most recently lead our Club Meetings while President Clayton was recovering at home from his injury.   Thank you Theresa!

Jim Bell received the Service Above Self award this year.  Congratulations Jim!

We also are sharing the letter from Sunrise Rotary to the home Club and District of our Korean exchange student, Justin Kim.   Justin and their club lost many young friends in the ferry disaster this spring. See our Facebook Page photo of the quilt sent home with Justin.

Thank you all Rotarians for your service and for your Rotary Foundation support at a new, high level!

El Salvador Kids

Sunrise is supporting and partnering with Daybreak Rotary for their El Salvador International project. I am very excited to have the opportunity to support and partner with a successful local club, while at the same time achieving our club goal of participating in an international project.

Our club has responded to Member's giving and provided a match for this project.

Follow Sean's year in Spain on his blog.

Sean's October 9 entries and pictures were about his birthday celebration.  See photo here with his Host Parents.  His September posts and photos of the mountains and views, plus a festival parade are spectacular.

I have been meaning to push this message to all of you, but I wanted to just say how great it was to see the interest there is within our Sunrise Rotary Club about the Blue Zones Project. I think that Kim Jass (Marion East Rotarian) did a remarkable job talking about the project, and I really do hope that you learned a lot from her. Kim is a full-time employee with the YMCA in Marion, and is a volunteer for the Blue Zones Project. She does this purely out of passion for the initiative, which is the same reason I love being involved with the project.

There are so many simple things that we can do every day to make ourselves healthier. Some as simple as taking the stairs over the elevator; or parking further away from the doors at a store. It’s so easy for people to neglect their health because they are so busy.

"On behalf of Rotary International President Ron D Burton, and his wife Jetta, I want to welcome you to Rotary District 5970. Located in the northern one half of Iowa with 54 clubs, we have nearly 2900 inspired Rotarians. The makeup of the District ranges from clubs almost 100 years old, to a recently chartered New Generations club."

"President Burton’s theme for 2013-2014 “Engage Rotary-Change lives” is so simple, yet so powerful!  The dictionary states that engage means, employ, occupy, involve, engross, absorb, take part, or appoint.  What does it mean to you!"

When we realize what we can achieve in Rotary – when we really engage Rotary – that’s when lives change. We change the lives of the people who need us. That is inevitable. And along the way, our lives are changed as well. That is also inevitable. That’s what our theme is all about in 2013-14: Engage Rotary, Change Lives.

It’s time to open our eyes to the potential each of us has through Rotary. Rotary lets us reach higher, do more, and be a part of something larger than ourselves. No matter how much we give to Rotary, we get more in return. And that, too, is inevitable.
