Our Purple Pinkie Day in the schools program is off to a great start with the first event taking place at Altimira Middle School on Friday, May 3. Will Deets, Principal of Altimira, is coordinating the school program and has scheduled additional PP days at , El Verano and Dunbar Schools in the next couple of weeks. Purple Pinkie is the creation of current club President Vicki Whiting who produced a curriculum for teachers to use to educate the kids about the Polio eradication effort that continues around the world, especially in the 3 remaining endemic countries, Afgahnistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. When children are immunized against Polio their pinky finger is dipped in purple dye as a way of keeping track of who has been inoculated.

"Op-Ed: Hand-cyclist gets grant to participate in End Polio Bike Tour"

Great article on Steve Brumme and his Bike Ride for Polio which, as you know, begins at Sonoma Plaza on June 2, following the completion of Hit the Road Jack. Several SV Rotarian cyclists are planning to give Steve a proper escort out of town. Pledges are being accepted for his 750 ride to Santa Barbara and back. Pledge forms will be available at our lunch on May 8 or you can contact any Rotary club member.

Our club assembled a volunteer work party on April 13 to work on the trail rebuilding project at Jack London State Park. The crew was led by Community Service Chair Gary Edwards and included Sam Morphy, George Merrick, Chip Allen, "JP" Parker, Wayne Schake, Sandie Nalezny and her son, Cyman Dever. The Rotary crew cleared a 300 foot length of the 2 mile loop trail to be designated the "Rotary Loop". This is part of a larger effort to restore the park's historic trails. Additional Rotary work parties for the trail project are being planned.

Our biggest party and fundraiser of the year, the highly successful and acclaimed Applause!, will be held on Saturday, August 17, at Hanna Boys Event Center. We'll be reaching out to our club and the community in the coming weeks for sponsors and auction donations so consider how you can best participate.
