Dean Stayner was named November Rotary Citizen of the Month for his leadership coordinating the Community Lunch program at Our Lady of the Mountains Church. The program offers a free hot lunch, M-F to anyone without regard to religion or need. Dean works with all the many volunteers to purchase and cook the meals as well as coordinating serving and clean-up. The program was started by Dean, Dan Hise and Neal Zaren over two years ago and serves over 5,000 meals a year. Interested in helping with the program? Contact Dean at 690-8597.

Dean is married to Julie, a counselor at the high school and frequent guest of our club when we honor Students of the Month. Dean and Julie came from southern California about ten years ago. Dean started the Book Trader business, selling it recently to begin EarthWorks, his pottery stoneware business where he has a studio in the Center for the Arts.

ImageDistrict Governor Mary McCambridge spoke at our November 8 lunch meeting. DG Mary is a senior vice president at Home State Bank in Loveland, Colorado and is a former president of her home club of Rotary Club of Loveland. Her talk emphasized Family, Continuity of Rotary, and Change. As Gandhi said, we should all be the change we wish to see in the world.

Mary is a strong proponent of literacy, and challenged the club to conceive a literacy project this year. She pledged her support in getting a matching district grant for any project we put forward.

Thank you DG Mary, for taking the time to come visit our club and share your inspiration with us. We'll see you at the District Conference.

An early heads up for all to make plans to attend the 2012 District Conference in Estes Park, Colorado this summer! The conference will be on June 7-9, 2012, and the Rotary International President will be speaking. It's very unusual for the International President to attend a District Conference, so this will be a very special event.

James Musclow, Dietrich Oberreit, and Bruce Pollinger all received their new member badges. Welcome (again) to the club! Judie Schmidlap invited all to attend the Silent Art Auction and festivities at the Center for the Arts on Friday night, November 18, 2011. The event runs from 6 to 8:30 pm. After the auction, stick around to attend the improv comedy at the Laff Stop in the Black Box Theater, also in the Center for the Arts. Tim Harland reminds us to that on Saturday November 19, we can attend the Wilson ski swap from 9am to 1pm.

There were no raffle winners this week, so buy extra tickets next week...your chances are getting better!

Patty Boyd, the new executive director for the Children's Learning Center, presented the day's program. If you missed this program, you should drop by the new CLC facility in Rafter J and see the amazing things they do. In Jackson for 40 years, the Children's Learning Center fills a critical gap in our community by providing early education to children aged 6 weeks to 5 years. Did you know that nearly 90% of all learning is done by age 5? CLC provides education, not just day care, and as a non-profit, does it at a more affordable rate than other facilities in town.

Thanksgiving is upon us, so help the club spread goodwill and build some friendships by signing up to ring a bell for the Salvation Army at KMart, Albertson's, or Smith's grocery. Each shift is only an hour long, and it really is a great way to build a friendship with another Rotarian and to meet community members. Call Tom Holland at 699-2451 to sign up, or use the sign up sheets at lunch.

The club Christmas Party will be at 43 North at 5:30pm on Tuesday December 13, 2011. There will be no lunch meeting that day. There is no charge, so show some cheer and put this one on your calendar. Spouses and significant others welcome!

Ed Liebzeit reported that the club's Foundation received $11,765 through Old Bill's Fun Run this year. The money goes into the Foundation's general fund, which is primarily used to further the Foundation's mission of supporting education in Teton County, but is also used to fund other club projects.

Visiting Rotarian Richard Tambor announced a Texas Hold 'Em poker game/fundraiser sponsored by the Jackson Hole Supper Club. The game will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 7pm at the historic Wort Hotel. There is a $100 registration fee and a $150 buy in. For information, call (307) 690-1788 or go to www.jhtexasholdem.org.

Our Rotary Business Minute was presented by Mike Daus, a man who has held every job this valley has to offer. Mike is an experienced property manager and would be glad to advise you on any property management issues you might have. Thanks, Mike.

We had only one visiting Rotarian today, Richard Tambor from the Supper Club, but the following Rotarians brought guests: James Musclow, Amy Madera, Deb Adams, Andy Hefron, Pam Stockton, Brian Siegfried, and David Clauss. Bringing a guest is a great way to promote awareness of Rotary in the community and to grow our membership, so thanks to those who brought guests!

Observe World Polio Day on 24 October by making a contribution to help End Polio Now. During the week of 24-28 October, Rotarians will receive 2-for-1 recognition for every contribution of US$100 or more made to PolioPlus at www.rotary.org/contribute. The promotion will begin at 06:00 CT on Monday, 24 October, and end at noon CT on Friday, 28 October. In addition, our club foundation will match your donation up to an additional $500! There's never been a better time to get involved in the fight to end polio. If the website is down, or the internet is not really your strong point, call John Gilmore at 733-4579, and he has volunteered to do it for you. It doesn't get any easier than that...

ImageDavid "Elvis" Watson presented the program, filling in the club on the structure and doings of Teton Science Schools. Teton Science Schools can be viewed as an umbrella covering six main areas, all seeking to link People, Nature, Place, and Education. They offer educational programs every day of the week, in different locations for all ages. Their graduate program offers master's level academics and mentored teaching in conjunction with several different universities and institutions. The Journeys School has classes from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade at their own campus. The Teacher Learning Center offer professional development for educators, and the Conservation Research Center conducts research, education, and contract stewardship in the valley. The sixth business center under the Teton Science Schools umbrella is Wildlife Expeditions, providing interactive and educational national park tours. Teton Science Schools is a private 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization, and we are lucky to have them in our community.

The Kiwanis Follies are here! Get your tickets for Friday evening's show from Jim Auge. Always a great show, the Follies are a fundraiser for Kiwanis and a fun look backwards at the events and headlines of the past year. Find out what really happened to the black meth box lost by the Sheriff's department... No one won the raffle this week, so buy extra tickets next week...Tom Holland is spearheading the Bell Ringer program this year, and would like to encourage all of us to involve our businesses in signing up for shifts. Sign up sheets will appear in the next few weeks... David Watson is the new scoutmaster of Troop 268... The Latino Resource Center will be sponsoring the Mexican Consulate this Saturday, enabling many locals to get their passports renewed, visas attended to, etc., without having to travel to do so. Contact Estella Torres for more details... Katherine Conover invites you to attend the Old Bill's Fun Run party on Monday at 5pm, at the Wildlife Museum for the presentation giving out the proceeds from the event to all the participating non-profits.

Today's Rotary Business Minute was brought to us by T. R. Pierce, who delivered a well rehearsed 40 second elevator speech on the wonders of the Bank of Jackson Hole. Founded in 1982, the Bank of JH has six locations, including three in Jackson, one in Pinedale, one in Alpine, and one in Dubois. Later in the meeting, TR was razzed for failing to tell us anything about himself or what he does at the bank. For the record, T. R. Pierce has over thirty (30) years mortgagelending experience and serves as Senior Vice President of theResidential Lending Department. Prior to moving to Jackson, T. R. was amortgage banker in the Washington (DC) Metropolitan Area for twenty-two(22) years. Originally from North Carolina, he is a graduate of EastCarolina University. T.R. has also been a backbone of the Rotary Club of Jackson Hole and is a past president and go-to guy for too many projects to count. Thank you T.R. for all of your service.

Looks like the cooler temperatures and hint of snow have shooed away the summer visitors. This week we only had two visiting Rotarians, from Texas and Arizona. Guess it's still 90+ degrees down there... Amy Madera and Mary Bess both invited guests to the meeting as well.

Mike Sillman has made an amazing recovery from his heart attack and will be back in Jackson Hole this week. We're glad to have you back Mike! Jim Auge was bored last week, so he went to the Grand Canyon and hiked down the South Rim, up the North Rim, down the North Rim, and back up the South Rim, non-stop. It took him 19 hours and 25 minutes to cover the 42 miles. If he hadn't lost his raincoat and backtracked to look for it, he says he would have been faster... Saturday October 29, 2011 will be Rotary Build Day at Habitat for Humanity, so you'll have someplace to go after the Ski Swap that morning. Joni Upsher brought half a dozen high school Interact Club Members to lunch, and they filled us in on their plans to make a service trip to Belize. Their chief fundraiser is a Read-A-Thon. Call Joni for details. Hal Richardson gave Mike Hammer kudos for his work on the ski races...Stuart Palmer called out our Student of the Month, Ellie Martinez, whose father was the guide for us when the club drove ambulances to Mexico from Jackson... Gil Ordway has been a Rotarian with our club over 45 years, longer than our newest member has been on the planet... Jason Snider and his wife will be having a baby next January... and Fran VanHouten won the raffle!

Our newest member is James Musclow, who has been in the valley 18 years. Born in Hawaii (although we still haven't seen his birth certificate), James was raised in Rochester, NY, where he played hockey. He attended the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, where he received a BA in Accounting. In Jackson, he has worked at the Jackson Lake Lodge, started and sold a fire suppression company, and now works with BSR selling restaurant equipment throughout the region. James is an avid hunter and backcountry skier, and also finds time to volunteer at the Old Wilson School. Welcome to the club, James!

Rotarian Mike Hammer moved to Jackson in 1980. Mike is a recovering lawyer (yes, there is a 12 step program for that), and his community involvement includes work at the Center for Resolution. The Center for Resolution is a resource center providing mediation services for all manner of disputes. He is also very active with the US Ski and Snowboard Association, officiating races in town. Thanks Mike!

We had three visiting Rotarians this week - it's nice to see so many vistors each week. We also had five guests of Rotarians, with Grant Larson, Mike Daus, Bruce Pollinger, Jason Snider, and Bob McLaurin all bringing guests. Great work in spreading the word about our club.

Our program was presented by Pam Maples of St. John's Medical Center, Terri Gregory of Teton County Public Health, Dr. Mark Menolascino, and Scott "Smitty" Smith of One to One Wellness. Jackson Hole - Destination Wellness is an initiative to promote health and wellness of the mind, body, spirit, and earth. Jackson Hole and the greater Teton area offer to visitors and residents a rich diversity of events, programs, facilities, services, and products. Jackson Hole, with its focus on health, wellness, and recreation; incredible expertise in a variety of arts and disciplines; and awe-inspiring mountain scenery and wildlife; is ideal as your destination for wellness!

The panelists provided a terrific discussion of wellness issues, noting particularly that while Teton County, WY is the healthiest county in Wyoming, we also have over 100 homeless persons here, and some 30% of our population has trouble accessing medical services. Healthcare issues facing us include affordability, unemployment, and binge drinking. In addition, obesity affects us. Obesity contributes to myriad health issues, including diabetes and heart disease.

So: eat healthily, exercise regularly, stretch, and be in a loving relationship! You'll live longer, be healthier, and happier too!

Help Save the Arches was the beneficiary of the last Saturday Farmer's Market this week.  The market presented our club with a check for nearly $2,200, which will be directed to the club effort to replace all four of the antler arches around the Town Square. Three of the arches have been replaced, and committee chairman Pete Karns hopes to raise the final funds and antlers to replace the final arch next summer.

We had two visiting Rotarians and a house full of guests this last week. Our meeting was a joint meeting with the Chamber of Commerce, so there were too many guests to name or count. Thank you all for attending!

As you may know, Rotarian Mike Sillman suffered a heart attack on Saturday and was rushed to the hospital. He had to be revived, and is in serious condition. As of 11 a.m. today, the doctors are just putting in a new heart catheter.  They remain very concerned about his blood pressure and irregular heartbeat.  His breathing continues to be very irregular.  Currently the dialysis machine is performing all of his kidney functions.  He is not in a coma, but heavily sedated due to nine different drips, the ventilator, the dialysis machine and all of the monitors.  The blessing is that each day that he survives he has a better opportunity for that to continue and they are no longer as concerned about brain issues given his most recent responses.

Please keep Mike in your prayers.

We had 5 visiting Rotarians at lunch today - welcome! In addition, Hank Phibbs, Becky Kimmel, Tim Harland, and Tom Miller all brought guests. Too bad Tom didn't show up, but his guest, former member Ed Scheer, introduced himself.

Our program today was presented by the Jackson Hole Children's Museum, a start up venture headed by Craig and KJ Morris, and supported by a long list of community members. The Children's Museum is a discovery center for children to learn by playing and experimenting. The exhibits and features change constantly, and admission is very reasonable. The Clubhouse, as it is named, is located on North King Street, directly behind AltaMira and Heather James Galleries, and south of the Rec Center. You can learn more at www.jhchildrensmuseum.org or on Facebook.

Welcome back to the Hole Word! After a two month absence, I'm feeling newly invigorated, and ready to bring you the weekly Rotry Club of Jackson Hole news. I've been a bit sleep deprived due to the usual summer rush and also to getting a bit less sleep than usual, courtesy of the young lady you see in the picture. Ah, ain't life grand? If you have any notes or announcements you would like to see appear in the Hole Word, please email them to me at tim@contourproperties.com, and I'll get them in here. If you make an announcement at lunch, please send me an email with the details, as I can't always write fast enough at the meetings, or I may not have heard you clearly. Cheers!

Jim Waldrop announced that the Wort Hotel, in conjunction with the Latino Resource Center, fed between 400 and 500 people at Miller Park over the weekend at the Latino Resource Center festivities. Thank you Wort Hotel, and Jim... The Teton Toastmasters will be hosting a regional competition of Toastmasters this Friday at 6pm at the Teton County Administration building. Accomplished speakers from all over will be here to match their comedic skills, including own very own John Morgan, so drop in and give it a listen... Valley Peters shared with us that your child only spends 13% of his/her time in the classroom, so use that other 87% wisely with your child and read books! Teton Literacy Center can always use another volunteer...call Valley at 733-9242 to volunteer an hour or two. The last Farmer's Market of the season will be this weekend, Saturday, September 24. Jim Darwiche reminds us that it's also the People's Market, and will be especially festive this weekend, with three bands, lots of food, all of your neighbors, and will run from 8am til pm, so come on down...Tim Bradley apologized for missing the presentation of the Rotarian of the Month Award two weeks ago, with a lame excuse of being busy, hah! It's summer in Jackson, we're all busy! Neither Grant Larson nor Betty Terril won the raffle today, so buy lots of tickets next week...the odds only get better and the pot bigger. Grant made a very generous donation to the Sergeant at Arms to celebrate his 57th wedding anniversary.
