The very first Spirit of Rotary Award was presented to Dick Barrett at his home by President Brianna Pridon and Vocational Chair Marty Raupple earlier today. Dick has spent his entire adult life embodying the principles and spirit that is Rotary. For well over four decades, he maintained perfect attendance, and during that entire time, he gave generously of his time and resources to Rotary causes. He and his wife Nancy have taken in more than a dozen Rotary exchange students, they have generously supported the Rotary Foundation, and have provided support and leadership to the Canfield Rotary Club in so many ways. For years, new members learned about Rotary through fireside chats held at the Barrett residence, and no one was more supportive of new members than Dick. The award is named the Spirit of Rotary, but it could just as well be called the Spirit of Canfield Rotary, since Dick has always been part of the energy that drives our club.

For the second year in a row, Nathan Pecchia not only won the Canfield Rotary Club's 4-Way Test Speech Contest, but went on to win the District Competition. Nathan, a senior at Canfield High School and a four-year member of the Speech and Debate Team, is continuing his remarkable career in speech by finishing with a first at State and competing later this spring at nationals. He is also a gifted actor and has had the lead in school plays. He is going to pursue a career in Drama. We are proud of how well Nathan portrayed the concept of the 4-Way Test, which embodies the principles of Rotary, and we wish him the very best in his career.

The cornerstone of Rotary is the commitment of its members to ethical behavior in both their personal and professional lives. This commitment is encapsulated in the Four-Way test, which is recited at the close of every meeting.
1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Each year, Rotary Clubs around the world sponsor a speech contest, in which local high school students compete with a brief speech that investigates an aspect of the world from the standpoint of the Four-Way Test. The Canfield Rotary Club is proud to host the students from the Canfield High School Speech Team, which this year is the #1 speech team in the State of Ohio. Representing the speech team this year are Nathan Pecchia, Rosie Jo Neddy, Andnik Massaro, and Brandon Brooks, who are all seniors. In an incredibly close contest, top prize went to Nathan Pecchia, who also won the top prize at the club level last year and then went on to win the Rotary District 6650 contest (representing 47 clubs in Eastern Ohio). Second place went to Brandon Brooks, with Ms. Neddy and Mr. Massaro tying for third place. Mr. Pecchia will again be representing Canfield in the District Contest later this month. Jeremy Hamilton is the coach of the speech team.

A WARM THANK YOU to our club! We passed the hat for Operation Warm and collected $265! That totals $1,385 that our club donated. That means we are adding 70 NEW COATS for 70 local kids this winter. This is a joint Division 1-A program between Canfield, Youngstown, Boardman,Struthers, Austintown, and Poland. We are hoping to make this a state-wide Rotary program next year, so more clubs buy coats for their local kids. This is why we are Rotarians... Thank you for stepping up and please tell others "what Rotary does!"

The Canfield Rotary Club is continuing its efforts to expand the Fly the Flag program into every neighborhood in Canfield. For a $25 annual subscription fee, the club will put up and remove a beautiful American flag five times a year (Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Veteran's Day). The program is described in our brochure. Please consider joining us in making Canfield a sea of patriotism!

Charles Sammarone, the mayor of Youngstown, spoke to our club at our regular Friday meeting on August 24th.  Charles was a teacher at Rayon schools for many years and also coached sports.  He then became the principle at Rayon for five years.  Charles retired in 1997 from school.  He was a member of City Council for 28 years and saw many city problems that never seemed to get solved.

The Canfield Local Schools Superintendent,  Alex Geordan, spoke to our club on August 17th.  Alex was an Andover Rotary member. The Andover Club is smaller than ours and not quite as active.  Alex spoke of his of Greek heritage and values, including the importance of faith, family, and education.  Alex’s father is a retired superintendent and his mother a retired teacher.  Alex has several aunts and uncles who have been educators. Both sets of grandparents were immigrants that came through Ellis Island.  One set lived in Warren; the other raising a family in Campbell. So Alex has roots in the Mahoning Valley.  He says he is all about family.

Our speaker for today was our very own Nils Johnson. He gave is an update on all of the thing that are going on with the Gas and Oil drilling in the area.

Nils noted that wells peak after the pressure is reduced, and their output is reduced unless outside pressure can be introduced to force out the oil and gas. We reached that peak for most of the wells in this country and worldwide, which means that new oil and gas will require new exploration and new techniques.

Brianna Komara Pridon chaired her first club meeting as president on July 6th. Instead of our regular program, Brianna talked about her priorities during her presidential year. She has recruited a vibrant group of people to help her achieve her goals, which include emphasis on membership, community activities (especially with the youth in the community), and international projects. She will be accompanying Kathy Price and Sieglinde Warren this fall on a Mission of Love project. She has already established committees to work on several immediate projects, including a golf outing in August to help fund club service and the international projects. We are delighted to have such dynamic leadership in the club for the coming year.

Gary Wakeford, President of Syncro Medical Innovations and a member of the board of directors for YNGAir Partners, addressed the Canfield Rotary Club on June 15th about the status and direction of the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport. His message was one of cautious optimism, with a heavy dose of practicality. At one point, the YNG airport was trying to attract commuter flights to hub airports, which would then connect to anyplace in the world. That strategy does not work well when there are three other commercial airports with substantial flights just over an hour drive from Youngstown. The current strategy of focusing direct flights to vacation destinations has been much more successful. The inexpensive and direct flights of Allegiant Airlines has increased passenger loads to the peak levels of 2000 and has shown the ability to draw passengers from places like Akron, Cleveland, Erie, and Pittsburgh.

Dr. Cynthia Anderson, the President of Youngstown State University, spoke to the club on June 8th about the directions that the University is taking.  Dr. Anderson is a native of Fowler, Ohio. She told us that she loves her job, she loves YSU, and she loves education.  Her main priority is student success and academic excellence.  Dr. Anderson is interested in values based education and wants her students to get involved in serving the local community.

Dr. Anderson reported that she has streamlined the registration process to make the enrollment process a better experience for new students.  She has attended alumni chapter meetings across the U.S., where she finds a lot of energy from the alumni members.  She also told us the story about one of the sororitys at YSU that raised over $150,000 for breast cancer research.

In 1984, Rotary International pledged to wipe out Polio from the face of the earth. Since that time, Rotarians have innoculated over 2 billion children worldwide, often negotiating cease fires from long-standing wars to permit volunteers to go in and risk their lives to innoculate children at risk. Rotary has partnered with numerous agencies, governments, and foundations in this effort, most recently with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. When we started, there were 1000 new cases a day worldwide. To date, there are just over 500 new cases in all of 2011. As our public service announcement says, we are this close.

The Rotary Club of Canfield will be holding a special raffle to support the Polio Plus program of the Rotary International Foundation, which is supporting this Polio erradication effort. It is called Something for Him; Something for Her, and tickets will be available for sale in the next few days (until Christmas). He gets four tickets for the New Year's Day game between Pittsburgh and Cleveland (courtesy of Sam and Donna Boak). She gets an incredible day of pampering for herself and a friend. Watch for details on the entire package here.

We will wipe out Polio, because we will not stop until we do. Let's finish the job!

Thanks to the technical wizardry and hard work of Bill Hendricks, we now have a system for taping, editing, and posting our weekly speakers on YouTube. It is perhaps fitting that the first speaker posted was our District Governor, who visited us on July 22nd. Now our members and potential members can catch speakers even when they are unable to attend a Friday meeting. We are posting the links to recent speakers on the second page of this article, and we encourage you to check it out.

Despite miserable weather, a hearty group of Canfield Rotarians and their families showed up on Saturday morning to clean up the two-mile stretch of highway 46 from Shields to Kirk Road. The lower part of the ditches were inaccessible because of the high water level, but we picked up two dozen large bags of garbage, making this part of Canfield a little nicer.

The Canfield Fair is less than a month away, and once again the Canfield Rotary Club will be in the middle of the action. We will have a tent just west of the Main entrance to the Grandstand, next to the commercial building. Please stop by to see us and find out more about what the Canfield Rotary Club does for the community. Canfield Rotarians can sign up to help at the fair either online or at one of the meetings in August.
