| Posted by Tonya Bennett-Bigeau Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.
There are 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Clubs are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. As signified by the motto Service Above Self, Rotary's main objective is service - in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. | | Posted by Marc Durocher The Timmins Museum recently opened in their new home and they were looking for volunteers to help serve drinks to those attending the grand opening. Rotarian Joanne St-Onge thought that this would be a great cause to support so she rallied the troops to help out for the event. Pictured are: Charlie Boulay, Robert St-Onge, Christina Geddes, June Woodburn and Jo-Ann St-onge. | | Posted by Marc Durocher Our club recently donated $1000 to this very worhy cause! | | Posted by Marc Durocher Although Michael is only a second year med student, afterhis talk to our club this Monday, it was every obvious to everyone inattendance that once he has completed his schooling, he will be a fantasticphysician. Michael is smart, eloquent and I think most importantly, compassionate. All traits that I am sure will help him in his goal tobecome a licensed physician once his schooling is completed. As many know, getting into Med school is very difficult. There are 17000 applications for the 7 med schools in Ontario. At teh Northern ontario school of medicine (NOSM), Michael was competing for one of only 64 spots among 1700 applicants. You have to admire his courage for applyingwith only a 3.75% chance of acceptance! The Rotary Club of Timmins-Porcupine is a proud supporter ofNOSM. The club previously donated$12,500 to an endowment fund in order to create a permanent “Jack HelpertMemorial Scholarship”. At one point during his presentation, Michael told us how when hewas 14 he was selected by our club toattend the “Adventures in Citizenship” program. He recalled how he had to be interviewed by apanel of Rotarians to be accepted. Michael also pointed out that “The skills thatI acquired from this interview were valuable and helped me in my med interviews”. It’s nice to see that the investment that our club made in a youngboy of 14 is still paying dividends many years later. We are very proud of Michael, and we look forward to following youas you grow in your career! | | Posted by Marc Durocher on Aug 03, 2011 Since theSpring of 2011, a number of community partners have come together in an effortto improve the TH&VS Pavilion located at HollingerPark in time for the City of Timmins’ 100thAnniversary Celebration scheduled to take place throughout 2012. The partnersinclude the TH&VS Homecoming Committee, the City of Timminsand the Timmins- Porcupine Rotary Club, who took the lead as the major financial contributorproviding $30,000 towards theenhancements of the project. Inaddition, Timmins Overhead Doors and Timmins Building Supplies donated serviceshelping to reduce costs of the project ThePavilion was originally constructed by the TH&VS technical students in 2000as a millennium project and so it was not surprising to see the TH&VS 2012Homecoming Committee come on board to support the significant enhancements thatinclude roll up doors, refurbished gable ends, piers for speakers, addition ofsuspension points for lighting, improved electrical service etc. This fall, thecurrent school administration, teachers and students will work at closing thethree remaining gable ends and refreshing the paint of the well used pavilion. Accordingto Mayor Laughren, “Timmins is a very special place in which tolive, learn, grow up and grow old, in large part because so many of us worktogether to strengthen and sustain the fabric of our community. By and large, people and organizations from the City have demonstrated energy, enthusiasm, generosity and passion for making a difference in the lives of others, and inthe overall quality of life enjoyed in our community. Though individualfundraising, giving and volunteer efforts, many continue to find ways tocontribute to the community in which they live, work and play.” The goal ofthe revamped TH&VS Pavilion project is to give Timmins and the performing arts community aplace to call home and a venue suited for medium-scaled events, but most ofall, to show community pride and involvement. Theinitiative was spearheaded by Midnight Express a well known music promoter whoprovided overall direction on the design of the enhancements for the TH&VSPavilion. “Ourcommunity is stronger as a direct result of our volunteers and our generouscorporate citizens” concluded Mayor Laughren. | | Posted by Tonya Bennett-Bigeau on Dec 16, 2010 Rotary club representatives were guests of honour on Dec. 14th at the annual Timmins Army Cadets Christmas Dinner. A $5,000 donation was presented to their organization to recognize their outstanding dedication to our community projects. Our club has been supportive of youth initiatives, as they are our future "bridge builders". | | Posted by Marc Durocher on Jun 30, 2011 Each year, the Rotary club of Timmins-Porcupine donates over $3000 in scholarships to the various high schools in our community. Despite having only two previous bouts under their belt, the Gold Miners' Daughters were the last skaters standing at the conclusion of the flat track roller derby event at Ted Reeve Arena. "We were the underdogs of the tournament," said Gold Miners' Daughters captain Amy Heffernan, who uses the track name Ames to Mame. "People were in absolute shock that this was our first tournament ever, they kept asking our coach, Jeff Latham (known on the track as Nick L. Bagg) 'What are you feeding these girls?'" In the championship game of 2 Fresh 2 Furious, the Gold Miners' Daughters skated over Toronto's D-VAS 67-24 in a hard-hitting affair. Despite the rather one-sided final score, the D-VAS did not surrender the trophy without a fight. "I just remember being on the line at the beginning of the bout and, after the whistle blew, two of their blockers hit and packed Ames up," said Rachel Matthews, who skates under the name Night Train Jane. "That was when the heat was on for me. We showed them we know how to hit too!" Nadia Riopel, known trackside as Nasty Nads, showed D-VAS the Gold Miners' Daughters have strong jamming abilities, as well, taking lead jammer status during the first jam. Assistant captain Lisa Tremblay, known as Kill'er Princess, followed up with some awesome jamming moves of her own. Both Timmins skaters impressed the crowd with their manoeuvres and speed — and made some new fans! The tournament featured 16 teams, with the Gold Miners' Daughters advancing after posting a record of five wins and one loss in round-robin play. The lone loss for the Gold Miners' Daughters, 38-30, came against Durham Region. Timmins fans interested in watching the championship game from 2 Fresh 2 Furious can do so by visiting YouTube and looking up GTAR derby. The trip to Toronto for the tournament was made possible by the support the Timmins roller derby girls received during the recent Rotary Ribfest, noted Gold Miners' Daughters president Yanick Tremblay. That success, combined with Saturday's tournament victory, has given the Gold Miners' Daughters a lot of momentum. However, the group still faces a few challenges. "We came back with a golden trophy, but we are still struggling to find ourselves a permanent place to skate," Yanick Tremblay said. "With a growing membership of 23 women, we are anxious to keep skating." The daughters have been without a regular skating venue since the spring and are in need of a permanent home. "What we did this weekend was incredible," Latham said. "We were nothing short of amazing, but without a practice space, it will be very hard for us to maintain that status." In addition to a new home, the Gold Miners' Daughters are also seeking more sponsors. http://www.thedailypress.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=3212480 | | Posted by Marc Durocher on Jul 05, 2011 The Rotary club of Timmins-Porcupine is currently seeking applications from residents in TImmins for the Group Study exchange program.
