My Year of Beds Author to speak to Lake Zurich Rotary Friday

Image            Annette Jahnel, the South African author of My Year of Beds, is visiting the Lake Zurich Rotary Club on Friday as part of her world book tour.  She was the first woman to circle the globe by car and the book is her tale of the people she met, the traffic jams she endured, and the beds she occupied, mostly in private homes.

“My purpose was - and is - to keep people aware of the fact that in spite of many interesting (and sometimes conflicting) differences... we remain a single family on a very small planet.”  She has spoken at many Rotary Clubs because her philosophy is very simiar to the Rotarian way of thinking.

Her presentation is part travelogue, part motivational speech.  “If you’ve ever dreamed about stepping out into a real life adventure – but never quite found the time,” Annette says, “I invite you to join the quest.”

The Lake Zurich Rotary Club meets on Fridays for lunch at 12:15 at the Holiday Inn Express, 195 S. Rand Rd., Lake Zurich.  First-time guests eat for free.

Wouldn't It Be SomethingThis Friday, our speaker will be Dennis Depcek, author of "Wouldn't it Be Something," based on the letters he and his wife exchanged during WWII.  He also talks about how writing can help people deal with problems and loss, which all of us experience.  Many Rotary Clubs have had Dennis as a guest speaker who enjoyed his presentation of a memorable love story.

If the impImageossible suddenly seemed possible, would that help you solve your problems?  According to magician and business consultant Jeff Scanlan, solving both business and personal problems begins with adjusting your mindset so you can think more creatively and challenge your assumptions.  Scanlan will share his insights at the Friday lunch meeting of the Lake Zurich Rotary Club this week.

Scanlan is a motivational speaker, sports magician and an expert in "Impossible Bottles."  He'll show us how it's possible to put a baseball, a deck of cards and a wide variety of other objects into bottles that look too small to receive them.  How's that for impossible?

The Lake Zurich Rotary Club will meet this Friday at 12:15 at the Holiday Inn Express, 195 S. Rand Road, Lake Zurich.  Guests are welcome to come for lunch.

If you were poor, would you buy books or food?  Exactly.  So, every month, the Lake Zurich Rotary Club gives away gently used childrens' and aduits' books at the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry in Lake Zurich, to feed minds.

Last month, Rotarians gave away almost 300 books to kids at the Food Pantry.  So the Club needs more.  If you have books they no longer need or want, the Club will accept them as tax-deductible donations.  Just indicate with your donation if you want a receipt.

Rotary Club members will pick up your donations from you if you send an email to  Or you may drop them off at R Professional Group, 535 Telser Road, Lake Zurich.  You may leave them at the door anytime, even if the business is closed.

Or bring them to a Rotary Club meeting, Fridays, 12:15 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express, 195 S. Rand Road, Lake Zurich.  You can even join us for lunch.

The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry is understaffed and is in need of volunteers to help distribute food every Thursday nite from 6:15-8:30 p.m.  Give an hour or work until closing whenever you have time.  This is not a weekly commitment unless you chose to do so -- all of the time you give is appreciated.

Another fun and successful fundraiser.  American English took us back in time to the 60s & 70s with songs from the Beatles. Check out the article in the Barrington Courier-Review & enjoy the slideshow of photos from the event.
