I hope that all of you were able to enjoy Father’s Day with your family or at least able to wish them well, I know that I did and with the nice weather we were able to spend it outside.  All you fathers make sure and thank your spouse because without them you wouldn’t enjoy the privilege of fatherhood.

I am looking forward this week to the presentation of Clark James Mishler, his presentations are usually the most enjoyable ones for me. So if you have not been there before or are new to the club make sure to be there to enjoy his work

Best wishes for all of you in the coming week.

Remember Peace through Service

Last Wednesday, thanks to a challenge from Denise LaFever, who offered a check to purchase an ecocina stove for a poor Mayan family in Guatemala, which was met by Clay Hightower and visiting Rotarian Sal, and a lot of large donations from other AER members, the AER International Service Committee's goal of purchasing 10 ecocina stoves for distribution when Bruce and Sandra are in Guatemala in August was exceeded so that now 14 stoves will be purchased with the accumulated funds.

The pictures below show a Mayan woman with one of the ecocina stoves that replaces open fire cooking.  As explained by Heather Flynn in another picture, a Rotarian from Eugene, Oregon, invented the stove after seeing many burned hands of women and children when she went on a medical mission to Guatemala.  There were also numerous respiratory problems among the Mayan villagers from inhaling the smoke from the open fires.

Ten brave Rotaians stood up and held a picture of the ecocina stove to represent those we were already able to purchase and those for which we still needed funds.  Four additional pictures will be printed, and at a later meeting the pictures will be out on a table so that all the Rotarians who contributed to the stove purchase can sign them, and they will be presented with the stoves in August in Guatemala.

Thanks to all who participated in our "Change for Change" effort that grew into something that will really create "Peach through Service".

AER Making Friends and Having Fun!

What a great Alaskan summer day at the Zoo on Sunday!  About 70 Anchorage East Rotarians and their families enjoyed the weather, animals, good food and wonderful conversations with friends at the AER annual picnic.  Thanks to Social Chair Rene Haag for all her hard work in putting this event together and to her helpers.  There were grab bags for the kids and a treasure hunt.  Special thanks to Raquel E. and the Hotel Captain Cook for sponsoring the hamburgers, hot dogs, and buns.  An array of delicious salads and side dishes were provided by members.  Greg S. was our Grill Master with several Grill Friends assisting.  A memorable time was had by all.

We love Non-Profit announcements and we have had a few of them recently and we want to keep them going; so we want to revisit the rules real quick so everyone knows what to expect whether you are giving or receiving:

  • All non-profit announcements should be less than one minute
  • All non-profit announcements should be cleared by the president prior to the meeting
  • All non-profit announcements should be cleared by the sergeant at arms prior to the meeting
  • All non-profit announcements are $10
So keep them coming!  Keep us tuned in to what your passions are and what we can do to help!
