Rotarian Bob Meistrell
July 31, 1928 - June 16, 2013

Redondo Beach Rotary's newest Honorary member, Bob Meistrell, the co-founder of wetsuit manufacturer Body Glove, died early Sunday morning. Bob died of a heart attack while aboard the Disappearance, which was traveling back from Catalina Island as part of the Rock 2 Rock paddleboard competition. Services are pending and a celebration of life is planned for July.

RBRC successfully distributed 272 dictionaries to Washington, Birney and Madison school second graders last week!  This effort by 13 of our members completed the District Grant Award project we applied for last summer. Molina Foundation provided the books and delivered them to each school.  Karina Garcia led the project and coordinated the efforts of the club, RBUSD, and the Molina Foundation.  Thank You, Karina!

The children were given bookmarks, Rotary stickers and a tutorial to teach the use of a dictionary.  Alexis Sheehy taught use of guide words, locating a word, reading the description, using the word in a sentence, interpreting a diagram, and finally instructed the students to leave the dictionary open in a  prominent place in their home so all family members could use it.

In this way, we feel we reached approximately 1000 Redondo Beach residents and certainly helped further our clubs Literacy goals.

Many thanks to all!

Happy New Year,

Nancy Campbell
President RBRC 2012-13

A Great Service Season in Mexico!

Two core objectives underpin and drive everything Project Amigo does: facilitating the education of disadvantaged students in our region of Mexico, and facilitating friendships and relationships between North Americans and our Mexican students and associates in humanitarian service.

We achieve those objectives due to a similar pair of efforts: the amazing dedication and labor of a small, very capable staff; and the contributions of big-hearted and equally dedicated humanitarians.

Like you.

CHARTER PARTY of The ROTARY E-CLUB of THE GREATER SAN FERNANDO VALLEY!

SUNDAY, JUNE 23, 2013

2:00 pm to 4:00 PM (Open House)

LOCATION:

The Fireplace Room at Denny’s Restaurant

            5525 Sepulveda Blvd., Sherman Oaks

SW Corner of Sepulveda and Burbank Blvds., next to the 405

(This is where we meet every month on the 4th Sunday.)

We will have snacks, and enjoy meeting and socializing with you, and sharing information, displays, and videos about our best service projects, including:

DANCE FOR THE CHILDREN (for PolioPlus )

INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY (with local 4th-6th graders)

“ONE MORE ITEM” FOOD DRIVES

AWESOME ONLINE PROGRAMS

No RSVP necessary, just come visit.  HOWEVER, we will appreciate if attendees, during the week before, add just one extra item of non-perishable food to your shopping cart, wherever you shop, and bring it to our Charter Party for donation to Valley Food Bank…just as we ask for our quarterly public One More Item food drives!  (You can steal that project, for your local food bank.)

We’ve been asked by a couple of friends in other Clubs if we have a “wish list” of Rotary items a new Club needs.  We are grateful to have been asked.  We acquired a couple of items from the former District 5260, so as it happens we have bell, gavel, podium, and badge box.  However, we are in the market for a Club Banner, must order our name badges for the charter members, and we’ll need trading banners.

…so all we can say, humbly, after deciding not to register at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, is that any contribution to the Rotary E-Club of The Greater SFV from you long-established Clubs, to go towards our purchase of these Club supplies, would be most gratefully appreciated.  (Rotary E-Club Greater SFV c/o Yoko Matsui (Treasurer), 4915 Tyrone Ave #223, Sherman Oaks CA 91423.)

Most importantly we look forward to hanging out with our fellow Rotarians on June 23 at our open-house Charter Party!  Thank you.

Mel Powell
President
Rotary E-Club of The Greater San Fernando Valley
Official Charter Date: 29 March 2013

(VANCOUVER) Have you ever seen a flash mob in action?  If not click HERE to witness the official Rotary "End Polio Now" flash mob. This event occured June 1st, 2013 on the steps of the Vancouver Art Museum.  Rotarians from Vancouver and Seattle participated. The video was posted by the Rotary International Club of District 5050. "I know a couple of Rotarians who were at the event in Vancouver and they had a blast," said PDG Rick Mendoza. "Someone in our district should take this idea and run with it."

(REDONDO BEACH) At yesterday's luncheon, PDG Pat Cashin announced that only seven reservations remain available for the upcoming club demotion and installation. "We only have 60 openings and they are going fast," said Cashin, chair of the event.

The activity will be a Rotary traditional evening, but with a feature that hasn’t been seen in the South Bay for decades. What’s new is that it will be a combined Demotion & Installation party for our outgoing President Nancy Campbell and president-elect Karen Weigel and her board. Also new (at least in recent years) is that it will be a black tie (optional) event with dancing to follow an evening of dinner and fellowship.

The evening event  will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Outgoing District Governor Lew Bertrand will demote outgoing President Nancy Campbell and incoming District Governor Doug Baker will install president-elect Karen Weigel and her board. The evening will start at 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm for cocktails with dinner and dancing to follow from 7:30 to 11:00 pm. The cost will be $50.00 per person.

Click HERE to register online for the Demotion & Installation party. Remember, only seven reservations remain!
