| Posted by John Harrold Fellow Rotarians, many of our members are familiar with Birch Community Services (BCS), but I want to share the link below to a new video just released that in 5 minutes can give new Rotarians visual/verbal knowledge on BCS. BCS was last year and again this year our primary recipient of funds raised at our annual golf tournament. (last year over $11,000) This years tournament is scheduled for Monday, July 15th, at Persimmon Golf and Country Club. Please take 5+ minutes to view this video so you know why Gresham Rotary feels so strongly about supporting BCS. Attached is our flier with details on signing up for the tournament. Forward this email to your golfing family, friends and neighbors. Our goal is 144 players and even a larger check for BCS. John Harrold - Secretary Gresham Rotary Club |

| Posted by Diane Noriega Notes from the April Club Board Meeting
We have had a very active year with membership development. We have one more member who has been approved for induction and 2-3 additional potential members. We achieved Premier Club status through the Zone Ignite program for our efforts. The club agreed to grant spouses who are both members of the club a break. Couples in the club will only be required to sell one set of tickets for our various events. Preliminary results from the wine raffle and auction indicate we will probably netover $15,000….way better than last year. Congratulations to the committee for a great job. Our Haiti water project has finally received an RI# which means we are close to approval

| Posted by Diane Noriega Gresham Rotarians arrived early this spring at YMCA Camp Collins for our annual day to get the camp ready for summer. Teams of club members worked the log splitters and stacked the firewood for summer campfires.
This year was particularly special, however. The club honored longtime member, Alden Stephens. He celebrates his 40th anniversary as a member of Gresham Rotary on April 1. Alden is also the retired Director of YMCA Camp Collins. He has devoted his career and his life to working with young people, making their lives happy and memorable. Gresham Rotary commissioned a special plaque designed and cast in bronze from local sculptor Rip Caswell. The plaque was to recognize Alden and his late wife for their enormous contributions to Rotary, Camp Collins and the community. On hand for the dedication were Alden’s family members as well as Rip. |

| Posted by Diane Noriega Dear Gresham Rotarians: It is hard to believe but this Rotary year is half over. I thought it would be a good time to take stock and see where we are with accomplishing our goals for the year. We have had an active and productive first half, for sure. We kicked off the year with a highly successful golf tournament that netted over $22,000. Half of the proceeds benefitted Birch Community Services. In July we sent 65 kids from My Father’s House, Birch Community Services and The Good News Clinic to Camp Collins. We participated in the Johnson Creek clean-up in August with only minor injuries sustained by two courageous Rotarians. Our second fundraiser was the Annual Steak Fry in September, with over 300 people at Mt. Hood Community College dining room. That event netted us over $12,000. Our dictionary project again provided over 800 dictionaries for third grade students. Centennial School District students have received their books. Oregon Trail students will receive their books in January. We started our Pocket Change for Polio campaign which will continue through the year. Feed the Pig! December was a great month. We kicked off the holiday season with our Staff Appreciation luncheon, which included a book drive and donations to Snow Cap. At that event we collected enough money to purchase 6300 pounds of food. We collected close to 100 new children’s books. The Literacy Committee met and decided to donate the books to Birch Community Services to give to families. We rang the bell for Salvation Army as we do every year. Ten families were adopted by Rotarians and made Christmas very special for them. We also accomplished one of our major projects for the year. Mark Eisenzimmer and his team showed up on a Saturday morning and planted 44 trees in Gradin Park It has been a very successful and productive year thus far, thanks to the hard work of Gresham Rotarians. Thank you to all of you for everything you do for our community. |
| Posted by Teresa Bright Hello, friends of Rotary Club of Gresham. We have created a new Facebook page for our club. Will you please search "Rotary Club of Gresham" and "like" us? Thanks!! |
| Posted by Naomi Ulsted on Oct 04, 2012 The Gresham Rotary focused on Oregon’s political issues by hosting a debate between incumbent Oregon State Senator Laurie Monnes Anderson, and candidate for Oregon State Senate, Scott Hansen. The two faced off at the club's October 10th meeting in front of an audience of just over 40 Gresham Rotarians and community guests, including Gresham Mayor Shane Bemis. |
| Posted by Diane Noriega There's been a month with no new polio cases The Global Polio Eradication Initiative reports that as of August 28, 2012, there have been no new cases of polio in the world for a month. The three endemic counties (Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan) all reported new cases during the last ten days of July with the most recent case being from Nigeria on July 28. Globally, there have been 128 new cases of polio as of August 28. This is compared to 356 new cases over the same time period in 2011. The polio eradication effort has been most effective this year in non-endemic countries with a decrease from 234 to 5. All five of those cases have been in Chad with the most recent on June 14. Polio eradication has also been very effective in Pakistan where the number of new cases has decreased to one-third of the number to date last year. New cases in Pakistan number 26 compared to 76 last year. The only increase has been in Nigeria where the number of new cases this year compared to last year is just the opposite of Pakistan with 77 new cases compared to 26 last year. Another very bright spot in the polio eradication effort is that India has now had no new cases for nineteen months. September 8 was the annual "Panhandling for Polio" day. It continues to be important for Rotarians to raise funds to support the eradication effort and to spread the word about Rotary's polio eradication efforts. "Panhandling for Polio" originated with the Willamette Rotaract Club and has been supported by many clubs in District 5100. The program not only raises money for polio prevention and eradication, but is also provides visibility to Rotary. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative budget for the 2012-13 biennium is $2.19 billion with a current funding gap of $945 million. Last year, Rotarians in District 5100 contributed or raised funds that provided vaccine to 192,550 children. We should feel very proud of the our efforts, but considering that Nigeria alone has over six million live births annually, there is a lot more that we can do! So please, continue to help save children from the potential lifelong disabilities associated with polio. PDG Dennis J. Wickham, MD wickhamdj@comcast.net District 5100 PolioPlus Chair End Polio NOW has developed a new website with more images and videos and other details. It also allows both Rotarians and non-Rotarians to make donations. Check it out at www.endpolio.org . |
| Posted by Diane Noriega The Second Annual Gresham Rotary Foundation Golf Tournament was held at Persimmon Golf Club on July 16. This year 50% of the proceeds benefited Birch Community Services. Barry Birch received the check at our July 25 lunch meeting. |
| Posted by Diane Noriega on Jul 01, 2012 Gresham Rotary Installs 2012-13 Officers On June 27 we installed the 2012-13 officers and board members at Wildwood Café in Old Town Gresham. Dexter thanked and recognized all the members who contributed to such a successful year. With the Radak bequest, Sue’s Fab 50 Project, and our three major fundraisers, Gresham Rotary raised over $200,000 this year. Gresham Rotary also earned the Changemaker Award from Rotary District 5100 for all our work in the Five Avenues of Service. Diane Noriega was installed as the new President. She started her remarks by recognizing Gresham Rotary for its strength and energy. We have a strong membership that works hard on our events, making it possible for us to do everything we do in the community. In addition to our ongoing programs of service, Diane outlined special projects for this year in each Avenue of Service. First, we are going to add 10 additional members and we are going to emphasize public relations in the Avenue of Club Service. In Community Service, we are working with the City of Gresham to enhance one of the city parks with tree planting. In International Service we have joined a consortium of clubs on a water project in Haiti. In Vocational Service, we are going to formalize what is now an informal internship program. Finally, in New Generations, we are partnering with West Columbia Gorge Rotary to launch a Rotaract Club at Mt. Hood Community College. It will be an exciting year. |
| Posted by Diane Noriega on Jun 17, 2012 June 14, Sue Piazza held her culminating event: her birthday party to award the proceeds from her year long fundraising project. Six, not five local charities received $13,000 each from Sue's Fab 50 project. The party was a well deserved celebration and tribute to Sue on her incredible work this year. | Posted by Diane Noriega on Apr 15, 2012 Saturday evening the weather blessed us once again. The Annual Wine Raffle and Auction at Tyee Yacht Club was set up beautifully in shades of "wine". Guests enjoyed a glass of wine and a variety of goodies as they perused the auction items displayed around the room. There was definitely something for everyone.
Winners of the Wine Raffle are: 10 bottles of wine to Sang-Gil Lee, ticket sold by Tad; 50 bottles of wine to Monika Deitchman, ticket sold by Pete Eidenberg; and the Grand Prize, 100 bottles of wine to Tricia and Gary Smith, ticket sold by Patton. |
| Posted by Diane Noriega on Mar 18, 2012 Sue’s Fab Fifty Party was a roaring success! Saturday night the old Borders building was transformed into a St. Patrick’s Day party with over 300 people in attendance. A dozen Rotarians and spouses were there to represent the club and cheer for Sue. The silent auction, the live auction and the paddle raise brought in significant contributions to the organizations that Sue is supporting. Scott “won” the evening with Michael Allen Harrison. Bob and Bess will be hosting an evening with the local guys from Alaska Gold Rush. I am sure the final tally will be really impressive. Check out the photo journal to see pictures of Rotarians in attendance. |
| Posted by Diane Noriega on Mar 10, 2012 Gresham Rotary spent the morning on Saturday March 10 doing their annual clean up at YMCA Camp Collins. There were 24 Rotarians working alongside a half dozen Boy Scouts who volunteered to help this year. Gresham Rotary member Curtis Bedont connected with Troop 495 of Camas, Washington to work with the club this year. Thank you to Scoutmaster Mike Buzsn who brought the scouts over on Friday and spent the night with them at the camp. |
