WELCOME ABOARD!

At the District 5240 Conference September 28-30, 2012, you will journey back in time and enjoy the authentic and unique experience offered at the Queen Mary and the nearby attractions of Long Beach. Going back to the days where steam ships were the quickest and most elegant way to travel, the Queen Mary was the first choice for the elite of high society. The majestic Queen Mary offers you the chance to step back in time aboard one of the most famous ocean liners in history. Registration is available on-line at the District website. Group rates for hotel rooms have been made with the Queen Mary Hotel. Contact the hotel directly and ask for the Rotary group rate.

The weatheImager is getting colder and the shopping days are getting fewer, which means that it is time for our annual club holiday party.  We will have the long standing tradition of the Fire Drill Gift Exchange but remember it is no longer a white elephant gift.  Please bring a wrapped gift valued at $25 for each person participating.   Guests are welcome but you do need to RSVP to Jennifer Kulhman so we have enough refreshments.

The party is on Saturday, December 17th from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.  The cost is $15 per person. Attire is holiday or casual.  The most important thing is that you come and share an evening of fellowship with your Rotary friends.

The Challenge is ON - again! We will be ringing the bell for Salvation Army at K-Mart on December 17th. The Kiwanis will be ringing the bell at Walmart.   This is a friendly contest between our two clubs and the real winner is the Salvation Army.

Please email David Mechtenberg with the times that you are available to ring the bell.  Or visit the calendar and select an open time.

If you are going to be out of town or busy.....you can help the cause by dropping some extra cash or a check in to our bucket at the lunch meeting on Wednesday, December 14th.

Mollie announced at lunch yesterday the continuation of the club's support of our local schools and teachers.
Following up on our great China Lake Gets Reamed paper drive, we are doing a school supply round up.  Many students arrive at class without the supplies they need to participate which means usually the teacher has to have extra supplies on hand.

We are asking Rotarians and others to donate $20 worth of school supplies to help our teachers.  Or you can give Mollie $20 or $20 worth of paper.  Every little bit helps.

The supplies can be dropped off at Packwrap or in the marked boxes at Staples.   Just contact Mollie and we can get you a list of the supplies.

The supplies will be distributed to the schools with assistance from Jodi Rummer.

Interactors Help Too!
The Interact Clubs also have been doing a school supply project.  They have been collecting supplies and giving them to the local Salvation Army.  The Salvation Army handles the distribution.  Contact Solomon for more information.

This meeting is a regular meeting of the Rotary Club of China Lake.  If you miss - you will need a make-up to ensure 100% attendance.  The lunch meeting at Victoria's is dark on June 8th.

Karen Stewart, our friend and fellow Rotarian from Simi Sunrise will be at the Carriage Inn March 24th sharing the wine from Four Brix Winery.  The tasting is from 5pm to 7pm and costs $25, or $20 for members.

Behind the Brix Wall
Four Brix WineryThe people behind Four Brix Wines came together originally under charitable beginnings.  Four of the six founders belong to Rotary International in Simi Valley California.  The other two founders are “HORs,” otherwise known as Husbands of Rotarians.  After making tons of home and hobby wines with other families we decided we wanted to share the wine making experience with others. Today Four Brix Winery is all about coming together to enjoy great wines, good friends and family (like them or not- they are still family).    Visit the Brix site

Mary Lundstrom suggested that club members help our local teacher by bringing a ream of plain white paper to lunch on February 16th. Club President Mollie Boster issued a challenge - she would match the reams of paper brought up to three full cases of paper. As of Friday, the club has collected over eight cases of paper. Additional reams can be dropped by the office of either Mary - Packwrap Business Center or Coldwell Banker.

Please join us for this special evening. Our guest speaker is Jim Lewis. Several club members have seen Jim's presentation and all have said that it is very moving.

The recent polio outbreak in the Congo region which was declared polio free in 2000, reminds each of us that the fight is not over. The outbreak so far has killed over 100 people and over 200 are hospitalized suffering paralysis. A single infected passenger on a flight from overseas could bring this awful disease back to our country...which means this is our fight too. Please join us to hear Jim Lewis share his special presentation.

When registering, please indicate your choice of meal: Prime Rib, Salmon, or Vegetarian Pasta Primavera. Contact Jennifer Kuhlman for more information or visit the calendar for a link to register on-line.

On Wednesday night at Victoria's at the Heritage, the Rotary Club of China Lake was joined by 5 Aussies, 1 Wombat, 1 Dingo, 1 Koala Bear and a troop of Kangroos. The visiting GSE team from the Melbourne area in Australia gave the club members and guests an informative presentation that was fun and rewarding. Because we earned Australian mementos if you got the answer correct. The final score: the Koala Bear - 1 point, the Dingo - 3 points, the Wombat - 3 points, and the Troop of Kangroos - 18 points. The winner - everyone!

Our friend PDG Jock MacKenzie passed away on July29, 2010. He had been moved into assisted living and been told he did not have long. His wife, Lynn, was there with him when he passed. He loved Rotary and all of his Rotary friends. He was passionate about the PRLS Program and believed it helped make our district strong.

Some magnificent projects grow from very small seeds. The Rotary Foundation had that sort of modest beginning. In 1917 R.I. President Arch Klumph told the delegates to the Atlanta Convention that "it seems eminently proper that we should accept endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world." The response was polite and favorable, but the fund was slow to materialize.
