| | Posted by Charlene Rosales on May 15, 2013 Save the date for Friday, June 28 at 4:00pm for the dedication ceremony at our community garden in Meadow Park. "Roots of Community", the public art selected for the garden, will be installed and dedicated to the City. Art to be enjoyed by gardeners and the general public has been anticipated since the early planning stages of the garden back in 2009. Cydney Holcomb, a San Luis Obispo neighborhood advocate who passed away in the summer of 2009, donated via her estate funds to the City for a public art project . Her friends and family made additional donations to recognize her contribution and the Rotary garden at Meadow Park was deemed the perfect fit for the Cydney Holcomb honorary public art project. In February 2011, a request for qualifications was released nationwide . 111 artists responded and a public art jury was formed, consisting of Ann Malek (gardener/neighbor), Gini Griffin (Artist), Meryl Perloff (Artist), Christine Mulholland (former City Council member and friend of Cydney Holcomb), Barbara Radovich (ArtsObispo/Arts Council), Hal Hannula (Public Works staff), Donna Lewis (Rotary representative), Charlene Rosales (Rotary representative) and Ken Hampian (former City Manager and friend of Cydney). The jury eventually invited six artists to present their proposals, and the jury unanimously selected the piece, "Roots of Community" by Boulder Colorado artist Joshua Weiner. The artwork consists of several sculptural elements made of marble; a large ring in front of the garden entrance, a small ring resting on a pedestal in the garden's common area as well as 4 benches with text extending upward. The rings and pedestals symbolize eternity and wholeness while the text on the four benches reflects the inspiration of Rotary and Cyndney Holcomb. | | Posted by Charlene Rosales on Mar 26, 2013 SLO Daybreak has moved its meeting location to Luna Red as of March 26! Located in San Luis Obispo at the corner of Chorro and Monterey streets, we will enjoy the convenience of free parking until 9:00am, the beauty of Mission Plaza and the fine hospitality of one of San Luis Obispo's favorite restaurants. The meeting time remains the same, 7:00-8:30am, and we look forward to being joined by the many Rotarians that work and live in the downtown area. This spring our club will be celebrating our 15th anniversary - come join us soon for a meeting, fun and fellowship. | | Posted by Charlene Rosales on Mar 04, 2013 Thank you to everyone that came out on March 2 to join the Rotary Clubs of SLO and SLO de Tolosa, as well as other community groups organized by the City, to help spruce up our Rotary Community Garden at Meadow Park. We dedicated the garden to the City in the spring of 2010 and dozens of folks came out to help clean up weeds, trim trees and plants, and give some tender loving care to some neglected plots which will be taken over by new, enthusiastic gardeners. Our community garden is a place that we have invested much time and funds into, and it gave those there a great sense of pride to give it some renewed vigor. Good work Rotarians! |
