The Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo de Tolosa will contribute $1,500 to I Care International for its 2015 trip to Peru.  Two Club members will participate as volunteers (Marti Lindholm & Sandra Lee) and the Club’s $1,500 will buy 1,000  pairs of readers  of all different powers, 1,000 pairs of sunglasses to help with those who labor in the intense sunlight, help those heart wrenching cases (cancer, trauma, etc), and help purchase glasses for those with very strong glasses prescriptions.  The clinic will serve more than 2,000 people who live in rural, underserved areas in Peru.

I Care's goal is to help others improve their quality of life by providing the gift of better vision and health. From the little boy who smiles because now he sees the clouds in the sky, to the older lady who cries because now she can sew and have an income, I Care International is changing lives one by one. Vision professionals and scores of volunteers have ventured to sites in both Latin America and the United States to provide tens of thousands of people with free eye care, medications and glasses.

Thanks to Mike McNamara & Sandra Lee for organizing this important effort.

International  Service Project – Donations of Shoes

Sprint Aquatics is a San Luis Obispo company owned by Laurel Mass, which designs and imports aquatic products used for physical therapy, training, and recreation.  Sprint has in their warehouse 3500 brand new water-aerobics shoes that have a slight design flaw.  Rather than returning the shoes to the factory, she is donating them to Rotary.  Mike McNamara has taken several dozen pairs to orphanages in Mexico (thank you, Mac!), and Tim Cleath & Jeanne Potter took several pairs to Haiti (thank you, Tim & Jeanne!).

For the rest of the shoes, Jim Eaton and Jeff Priolo determined that Paraguay would be great place to send the shoes, that’s what they are working on.   Searching for a Paraguayan Rotary Club partner to receive and distribute the shoes, Jeff was fortunate to connect (gotta love the internet) with Federico Lewkowitz of the Rotary Club of Asuncion, Paraguay.   Federico and his fellow Rotarians are anxious to receive the shoes and to distribute them to hundreds of flood victims.

While Jeff Priolo is working on the logistics (shipping, customs, etc), Jim Eaton is working hard on raising the money for the shipping costs, estimated at $5,000, and our Board has generously allotted $2,500 toward this.  Jim has contacted several Rotary Clubs, seeking donations of  $250 to $500 each, to raise $2,500.  So far, our Rotaract Club and Templeton Rotary have each pledged $250.  Let Jim know if you would like to contribute and/or know of possible organizations, companies, or individuals who may wish to contribute.  Our goal is to ship the shoes to Paraguay by November 1st; we need $2,000 more.

A big thank you to Jeff Priolo, Jim Eaton, Mike McNamara, Jeannie Potter & Tim Cleath for this great international project.

Our SLO Rotaract Club is collecting Coats for Kids at business locations throughout San Luis Obispo County.

I want to thank all of our members who have graciously agreed to have a Coats for Kids Box at their business location throughout the month.  Our enthusiastic Rotaract Club Members have distributed 50 boxes to businesses throughout our county (including many of our members) in order to provide coats for needy children in our community.

Still want to help?  You can bring used or new coats to our Rotary Meeting - we'll have a box set up there for collection.

It's an easy way to support our Rotaract Club - as always thanks for supporting our youth.
