| Posted by Kathleen Copus on May 12, 2013 Join us this Thursday to meet and hear from Carmen Applegren of the Braille Institute. Carmen began losing her eyesight at an early age, yet she didn’t let it stop her from doing the things she loved: riding her bike, skiing, playing tennis, baton twirling and ice skating. When her next love turned out to be show business, she was no less intimidated. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Michigan State University, she acted, sang and danced her way through a successful career in theater. Like so many of her peers, her love eventually brought her to Los Angeles. But as her vision diminished further, so did her ability to pursue her acting career. She came to Braille Institute in 1986 as a student. Before long she became an enthusiastic volunteer, teaching her fellow students how to tap dance. Carmen worked for Braille Institute in Los Angeles as Community Relations coordinator for 21 years. She now has her own business doing technical advisement with the Entertainment Industry teaching actors how to portray a blind person.
