Hopkinton Rotary is a service organization consisting of men and women dedicated to improving our community both near and far. Through our own efforts and in partnership with  similar minded groups we strive to provide help where it is needed.  To create a better informed and cooperative community we act to convene various individuals and groups in our town for the purpose of discussion and education. We welcome all who share a similar vision to come and join Hopkinton Rotary.

Dear Fellow Hopkinton Rotarians,

Hopkinton Rotary has had a productive autumn.  On September 27 we staged our second annual Mount Kearsarge Hill Climb (MKHC) with over 80 participants. The event was excellently chaired for a second year in a row by Irv Gordon.  MKHC is the 9th of 10 races in the competitive Bike up the Mountain Point Series (BUMPS) attracting riders from throughout the Northeast. We were blessed with great weather and an excellent turnout of our membership to safely stage the event.  The Feedback from the cycling participants has been uniformity positive and the plan is for the 3rd annual MKHC in 2015 with a rider goal of 120. Several cost saving changes are planned for 2015 including the elimination of event tee shirts for a savings of ~$1200, preparing the lunch ourselves for a savings of ~$625 and the handling of the timing ourselves for a savings of ~$1400. These changes should boost our event profits by over $3000!
On October 2, Ben Barton, of Barton Insurance, hosted the Community Benefit Golf Tournament at the Lake Sunapee Country Club. Ben selected 6 nonprofits in the Hopkinton and New London communities to be recipients of the proceeds from the event.  Hopkinton Rotary was fortunate to be chosen as one of these recipients. The event was a tremendous success raising nearly $30,000. On October 15 Ben presented Hopkinton Rotary a check for $4800!  Ben will be formally recognized and thanked at our November 12th meeting with induction into the Paul Harris Society as an honorary member.
Election Day is November 4 so make sure to do your civic duty and vote. We will have a table to sell Flags Over Hopkinton contracts in pursuit of 250 flags by Memorial Day 2015 as part of our contribution to the town's 250th Anniversary celebration.
Volunteer day for the Wood Bank is November 15 at 9AM at the Hopkinton Transfer Station.  We have supported the wood bank financially now let's get out there and cut some wood!
November is Rotary Foundation month. I encourage all of us to contribute to the Foundation Annual Fund. The amount contributed is not as important as 100% club participation. The overall goal for the club is $6000. We are at  Pete Powers, our Foundation Chair, will be available to answer questions regarding the various ways to make your contribution.  We are honored to have Ken Grabeau, a former Rotary Foundation director, visit us and speak about the Foundation on November 5. The District Foundation dinner is November 12 at the Crowne Plaza in Nashua at 5:30PM.  If you are interested in attending you can sign up at the District website.
The proposed Somaliland Maternal Health global grant project is a great example of how we benefit from the Foundation.  The district will match the money we raise dollar for dollar with district designated funds (DDF) and the Foundation will match 100% of the DDF and 50% of cash that we raise. For example: if we were to raise or contribute $10,000, the district matches with DDF increasing the total to $20,000, the Foundation then matches 100% of the DDF plus 50% of our contribution bringing the total to $35,000! We have heard from our Somaliland partners and they have provided a proposed scope of project and the hospital is now working on the actual dollars needed. It is slow going but when completed will be a great benefit to the women and children of Somaliland.
The Rotary Christmas party will be Friday, December 5 with no morning meeting on December 3.  If you are interested in hosting the party please let me know!
Sincerely,

Eric Schlepphorst

Chris Licata, CEO of Blake's All Natural and Hopkinton resident, will be presenting our program this Wednesday, September 17. He will be discussing  his four generation family business.  Many of you will recognize the company name, particularly those from Concord who have been eating Blake's Turkey pies since 1929 when they first went into business.  Make sure you mark it down on your calendar to come.  Information on the company can be found at www.blakesallnatural.com

President's Letter August 2014

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

The first six weeks of the Rotary year have been busy ones for Hopkinton Rotary. We ended the 2013-14 year in June with a successful golf tournament at the Concord Country Club raising over $10,000 for graduating Hopkinton High School student scholarships. We are looking forward to volunteering and participating in the upcoming Contoocook Carry Triathlon on September 6 to benefit the local Wood-for-Warmth program which we have also supported with sponsorship dollars. We are now "gearing up" for our second annual Mount Kearsarge Hill Climb bike race on September 27 hoping to build on a very successful first year! This summer we have seen significant growth of our Flags over Hopkinton program and have targeted an ambitious goal of 250 flags by 2015, the Town of Hopkinton's 250th anniversary. Following this will be the big push to finish and sell our 2015 Hopkinton Rotary calendar which will also feature the Hopkinton's 250th anniversary theme.

We are happy to welcome Laura Beaudoin, our first new member this year. Laura has a strong interest and experience in utilizing social media and we look forward to her help in instituting this communication tool in our club. If all goes well we hope to add 4 more new members this fall through the diligent work of Bill Chapin, jr. our membership chair. I would encourage each and everyone of us to simply invite a friend to a meeting. When visitors experience the positive energy of our meetings it makes joining an easy sell!

This July we had the honor of a visit from new District Governor Rich Berryman. The board met with DG Rich the Tuesday night before our Wednesday morning meeting, discussing our club goals for 2014-15. DG Rich then presented to the club the district's goals for the year emphasizing the theme of "Light up Rotary" as we strive to get the word out of the good work that we do.

The board also has also engaged in much discussion around the topic of supporting the Rotary Foundation. It is through the Foundation that truly big projects such as polio eradication can be accomplished. Hopkinton Rotary has always been very generous in our Foundation support and I am hopeful that 2014-15 will be the best ever. I would like to see every member of our club support the Foundation. Pete Powers, our Foundation chair, will be presenting regular updates on Foundation activities and where we are in our support.

I am very pleased that on August 27,at club assembly, I will be awarding my first Paul Harris recognition to John Watson. Well done John! We have a number of other members close to this distinction so hopefully John will be the first of several this year.

Thank you for all you are doing. It does make a difference. Sincerely,

Eric Schlepphorst, MD Hopkinton Rotary President

Hopkinton Rotary long term member Phil Reeder presented to the Hopkinton Rotary a description of his fascination with and creation of kinetic sculpture over the years and brought several small models for the membership toImage play with.  He also described his recent purchase and refurbishment of a nineteenth century Congregational church in Bethlehem, NH that he has converted to open studios leased to local artists. Who would of guessed what Phil has been up to!

On August 13 Hopkinton Rotary was pleased to have Emma Woodside describe to the club her year in Romania through a series of photos and stories. It was truly an engaging and entertaining program and spoke to the power of youth exchange in developing character and confidence in our young people.Image
