It was a beautiful evening at The Benchmark Restaurant at Niagara College. The Food, service , members and guests made it a truly memorable evening.
Cliff Brown did a fabulous job in "roasting" Howie who in turn gave a great acceptance speech. A truly worthy recipient of a Club Paul Harris Award.
Don McDonald introduced John Wiens and I was overwhelmed at his numerous accomplishments in community service over the years. John accepted the award in a very gracious speech. What a well deserving person to receive a community award.
Congratulations to both and also a big thank you to Ursula for organizing such a classy evening.

| Posted by Lorna Penman on Apr 07, 2012 The Niagara on the Lake club hosted this year's Rotary Clubs of Niagara Annual Joint Lunch on Tuesday. The Fife and Drum Corp from Fort George was the welcoming committee which set the tone to this year's 1812 theme. The Guests listened to local historian and author Ron Dale who informed us of the important events leading up tho the war of 1812. The sole American present was our district governor John Heisse who was of course outnumbered , however he took it well and was allowed to leave unharmed. |
| Posted by Lorna Penman on Mar 29, 2012 Danny Lamb one of our former outbound exchange students gave us a presentation of his recent trip to Uganda as well as an insight into his life living with Hydrocephalus.
This delightful young man was born with the birth defect Hydrocephalus and due to modern medical techniques as well as the insertion of a shunt is living a fulfilling life. As he puts it, he realises how he "dodged a bullet' as many children born with this defect also have a mylomeningocele , a neural defect of the spinal cord which usually leads to paralysis of the lower limb. Danny is now an ambassador for this cause and his recent trip to Africa to a Convention gave him further insight into the problems and what is being done for these children worldwide.
Danny is now a 4th year student at Brock university studying music. We wish Danny all the best for his future and good luck with his band.

This amazing young woman has been biking across Canada for 2 years to bring awareness to these villages which provide long term family based care to orphans around the world. She asked us to try and spread the word to families and friends. Tana left us with a lasting impression of " This mad Englishwoman who jumped up and down in front of us to gain our attention. "...and she did just that!

She was asked to put $1 in her piggy bank, $1 to do something "good" and she could spend the remainder on whatever. Piggy bank - no problem. Spending $8 - no problem , but good works? What does a 4 year old know. Well it happens a lot! She thought long and hard, then asked her dad about " that place he went to help out." | Posted by Lorna Penman on Aug 26, 2011 TRIBUTE TO Dr. KEN GOODWIN - ROTARY 7090 DISTRICT, GIFT OF LIFE John Rydzic, a representative from Rotary Club International's Gift of Life gave the members a wonderful presentation, sharing some of the highlights of Ken's many years of involvement in the Gift Of Life .
He told us that Ken had the radical idea that he believed children's surgery be performed in their own country where they had family support and familiar surroundings. This led to a medical team being formed and taken to Guatemala City where they now have performed 30 successful heart surgeries over the years.
Ken was involved in many projects subsequently but his most important legacy was his personal "hands on" involvement with all the children and parents coming to Toronto for surgery. John Rydzic presented a plaque to Ken's widow, Nicole. Pictured on the plaque is Vennia del Carmen the last child he helped through The Gift of Life. A cheque for $1600 was presented to John Rydzic which were donations given by individuals and friends of Niagara on the Lake Rotary Club in a tribute to Dr Ken Goodwin's work and the 33 children he helped to save. Look to The Niagara Advance this coming week for a story on Dr Ken Goodwin and the Gift of Life.

He is a fine young man and a fabulous storyteller, he will go far...and how farther can that be!
He also is an ambassador for Canada as his family is apparently having a few guests this Christmas and ongoing throughout the year. Thanks Owen.

We had a great selection of really delicious food with nary a pot in sight. I think you all finally got it! | Posted by Lorna Penman on Jul 24, 2011 It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Dr Ken Goodwin. Ken was a long time Rotarian, a very regular attendee, most of the time riding his bike. He was a special person, quiet and unassuming but dedicated to the welfare of others and the environment. Ken was a great advocate of the local hospice palliative care, Amnesty International and of course his main focus in Rotary was "The Gift of Life". He was the chairman of the local district 7090 committee of this group. He will be greatly missed by us all. There will be a service to celebrate the life of Dr. Ken Goodwin on Tues at 2pm in the Morgam Funeral Home, Regent st., Niagara on the Lake. There will be no visitations.
