With the completion of Ramp #71 last Friday, we’ve completed our activities for 2013.  During the year we built 18 ramps – a new record – and have a zero waiting list.  GREAT JOB, EVERYONE!!!

Thanks to “Preacher” Mike Freeman’s inside track with the man in charge of weather, we had an almost balmy day with very little threat of showers.  Volunteers for the job were: Jon Canada, Mike Freeman, Brian Gracey, Jane Hemmer, Larry Jewett, John Leppelmeier, Alex Barraclough (our GRSP student from Scotland) and Mike Weinberger.  Jon Canada, who’s now a full-time builder set a torrid pace that challenged all of us – welcome back, Jon!

This ramp provides much-needed relief to the homeowner and her adult daughter, both of whom have mobility issues.  They are greatly appreciative of the early Christmas present that we gave them.

Thanks again, everyone, and I hope you have a joyous holiday season!

A special thank-you letter and a $500.00 donation was received from the owners of the rental house where we built Ramp #63 on July 13.

"Mr. Gracey, my husband and I want to thank you and the Rotary Club of Gainesville for the beautiful ramp (Bridge) you built for our renter Mrs. Geraldine Roper.

We want to donate $500 to your project of helping disabled people with a need for easier access to their homes. What a worthy cause!

Mrs. Roper enjoyed watching the "hard-working volunteers". She is so happy and we are for her.

It was certainly a pleasure speaking with you on the phone and hearing how the Rotary project works.

Please accept our check and pass it forward to help others in need."

If you haven't volunteered and would like to get your name on the volunteer list pleasecontact:

On Saturday, May 18, we built a medium-sized ramp for an elderly widow on Overlook Drive, Gainesville.  See attached photo.
The ramp is located in a carport, so the threat of rain wasn't a concern (never saw any).  Everything went very smoothly and we were finished by lunch time.  In fact, we called Johnny's BBQ mid-morning and said we wouldn't pick up our lunch like we usually do -- we said that this time we would "dine in"at Johnny's.  Which we did.
Beaucoup thanks to our volunteers:  Rick Boyd, Gabrielle Diaz, Brian Gracey, Larry Griffeth, Gene Harper, Martha Nesbitt, Hank Tanner and Harold Wright.

In honor of her passion for service, Haydeé Anderson was named the Woman of the Year Award.

While presenting Anderson with the award, Doug Carter, Rotarian and friend of Anderson, said she has spent her career in Hall County providing a voice to others.

Not only did she and her late husband, Dave Anderson, found Gainesville’s only Spanish-language newspaper, Anderson worked as a Spanish teacher for a number of years and as an interpreter in the Hall County court system.

She also has served on the boards for The Hall County Boys & Girls Clubs, Rape Response, Lanier Technical College and as a member of Vision 2030 and The American Red Cross.

Frank Norton Jr. presented the Man of the Year award to Sen. Butch Miller. Norton said it was Miller’s “roll-up-your-sleve, can-do attitiude” that earned him the award.

Miller has been actively involved in Challenged Child and Friends and worked to help build The Field of Dreams, an athletic field for children with disabilities, at Alberta Banks Park in Flowery Branch. Miller was recognized for giving his time and efforts to help children at many other community organizations including Eagle Ranch, the Hall County YMCA and Edmondson- Telford Center for Children.

Miller said he “could have been knocked over with a feather” after hearing his name announced for the award.

He said he was both honored and humbled to be recognized.

Dr. Mary Watkins, D.C., of Gainesville, was named the Georgia Chiropractic Association's Chiropractor of the Year during the association's 100th Annual Fall Conference & Trade Show October 19.

The highest honor bestowed by GCA, Watkins earned the award through her tireless dedication to the association and the profession.

"Mary created an ambassador program at our conferences to make attendees feel welcome, and she spearheaded our membership drive this year, which has resulted in nearly 100 new members," explained Mark Cotney, D.C., last year's recipient of the award. In addition to serving on GCA's board of directors, Watkins was recently appointed to the Georgia Board of Chiropractic Examiners by Gov. Nathan Deal.

"GCA is an important part of my life," Watkins said. Serving GCA is serving chiropractic."
