The World's Most Famous Detective in a New Mystery
Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club
-- By Jeffrey Hatcher
Based on "The Suicide Club" by Robert Louis Stevenson and Characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Directed by Mark Shanahan and Gregory Boyd
Mature themes; General audiences.

Based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s “The Suicide Club” and featuring beloved characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Jeffrey Hatcher (Mrs. Mannerly, 2010) crafts a smart new Sherlock Holmes mystery. Having played Sherlock Holmes in The Crucifer of Blood (2009) and Sherlock Holmes (2003), Alley Theatre Company Artist Todd Waite will again play the iconic and illustrious detective in a spectacular, lavish production. Dark forces may be manipulating the deaths of prominent men in a plot so far reaching that the fate of Europe is at stake. It is up to the brilliant Detective Holmes and his old friend Dr. Watson to uncover the chilling secret of the “suicide club.”

On Monday evening April 8th, The Rotary Club of Houston Burnett-Bayland Committee held a Graduation Ceremony and pizza party for 19 youth who participated this past Spring in the Success at Work (SAW) program at the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department’s Burnett-Bayland Reception Center.  The five session SAW program prepares the youth for success in the workplace through activities like preparing a budget, completing a job application and mock interviews.  In the final session, the youth develop a business plan for starting their own Cookie Company while munching on chocolate chip cookies to whet their appetite for the work at hand.  Rotarians Michael Ragusa, Joel Levine, Jim Behrmann, Clint Laechlin, Phil Hampton and Marian Richardson co-led the three SAW groups at the Center this past Spring. Rotarian Deb Theotokatos assisted with the Graduation.  The youth were each presented with a certificate at the graduation that they can add to their portfolio.  Several of the youth read letters expressing their heartfelt gratitude for the SAW program.

The Burnett-Bayland Reception Center (BBRC) is a secure placement facility for male juvenile offenders.  In addition to the general population, BBRC offers a juvenile sex offender treatment program, a psychiatric stabilization unit and a substance abuse treatment program.  The facility is located at 6500 Chimney Rock Road in the Gulfton neighborhood.

The Rotary Club of Houston sponsored the “Hearts for Children” Festival in partnership with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services in Region 6 on Saturday, February 9th at the Harris County Department of Education.   At the Festival 76 amazing children whose parent(s) rights have been terminated due to abuse, neglect or abandonment mixed and mingled with 41 prospective adoptive families (71 adults).  A CPS spokesperson likened the event to speed dating where families licensed and looking to adopt met with foster children in a relaxed and fun filled atmosphere.   The children were between the ages of 5 and 17, many were part of a sibling group.   The fun filled four hours included activity booths assembled with the help of the Roteractors, a visit from Toro, the Texan’s Mascot, and a DJ who led the children and prospective parents in many fun games, activities and karaoke and a photo booth.  A lunch catered by Chick Fil A was enjoyed by all the participants.  Rotarians Joel Levine, Jesus Amezcua, Deb Theotokatos, Phil Hampton, Jim and Judy Behrman, and Rick Slemaker all had a great time organizing the event and volunteering the day of the Festival.  The Rotary Club of Houston looks forward to hearing about the matches that were made as a result of the Festival from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.

For more information or to be a part of the Youth Committee, contact Joel Levine at joel.levine@cps.hctx.net or Jesus Amezcua at jamezcua@hcde-texas.org.
