Stuart Ballantyne, CEO of the 2015 Canada Winter Games, hosted here in Prince George from February 12th to March 1st, 2015, provided an update to Nechako Rotary Club members this morning.
The Theme for the games is "Inspiring Dreams & Building Champions".
The Prince George Community competed for Hosting the 2015 Canada Winter Games in 2010. Following the successful bidding process, the huge logistical process of making ready for the delivery of these events will take place during the next 3 years. This is precisely 1114 days in the future.
This means that Prince George must think and plan "Big" as "The Nation will come!"
The Canada Winter Games will host 2100 Athletes during the 3 week period.
Athletes, 13 teams, will participate from all of the 10 Provinces and 3 Territories. These athletes range from ages 12 to 35.
An additional 1500 Coaches, Team Staff and Officials will also be present and require accommodation, care and feeding.
There is a total of 24 types of Winter Games involved, with 18 separate venues, all within the City Limits, only 15 minutes away, with the exception of the Ski Events being hosted at Purden Ski Resort, Tabor Mountain and Otway's Caledonia Nordic Ski Club.
This will be the 25th Edition of the Canada Winter Games, that were created initially in 1967.
The events, plus logistics, and the thousands of associated tasks associated with this huge series of events will require 6000 Volunteers from the community. Without volunteers, this type of event is not possible.
Prince George is well known for their Community Spirit and Volunteering to make these kind of events a huge success. The 2015 Games will be another record as demonstrated by the people of Prince George and fellow Northern Communities in BC.
Stuart was thanked by Rotarian Dolly Hilton, with another donation to our Polio Plus Program.
