| Posted by Geoff Collier on Apr 21, 2012 All five Rotary clubs and the Rotaract club worked together once again on the Rotary Food Drive, an event held twice per year that is sponsored by Rotary and supported by many Rotary volunteers from all clubs. We had over 30 volunteers out on Saturday from our club to help with the Food Drive. The results were another record ! 60,000 pounds of food were collected from the generous folks of Kamloops, eclipsing the record of 50,000 pounds from the last Food Drive. A Daily News photographer came by to take pictures as we were getting organized. Thanks to all Rotarians involved, and the family and friends they brought with them.
| | Posted by Geoff Collier on Apr 16, 2012 Bill’s presentation examined the important area of Human Rights, and the development of International Laws and Courts that support human rights in the complex political mosaic that is our world. Developing World Peace is one of the cornerstones of Rotary, and this topic is important and relevant to anyone who believes that protecting the rights of individuals is a key part of creating a more peaceful world. This presentation flowed out of Bill’s studies towards a Masters degree in International Human Rights Law at University of Oxford (2010). Bill Sundhu is a member of our club, and is a senior litigator who provides trial and appellate advocacy in criminal justice, human rights and civil liberties. He has extensive experience in all court levels of the Canadian legal system and knowledge of international tribunals and courts. He was called to the bar in 1984 and his career includes 10 years as a BC Provincial Court judge. | | Posted by Carl Sulkowski on Feb 27, 2012 Guest Speaker – Bud Smith – Northern Gateway Pipeline and Ridley Terminals Bud Smith, QC, is a UVIC graduate who obtained his law degree from UBC in 1974. He is an active Kamloops-based businessman with ownership interests in engineering, construction, lending and travel companies operating in BC and Alberta. A former Attorney General, Smith served as Kamloops MLA (1986 - 1991) and Cabinet Minister (Regional Economic Development, 1988 - 91). Smith has served on a number of Crown Corporation boards, including Canada Post Corporation (1991 – ‘94), BC Development Corporation (1979 - 1983), Prince Rupert Port Authority (2007 - 2009) and Ridley Terminals Inc. (2009 - present). Smith has given his time to a number of community services and programs, including the Diocese of Cariboo (Chancellor), the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce and the Western Canada Theatre Company (Trustee). | | Posted by Devon O' Toole on Feb 11, 2012 Devon drive Fern and our outbound student to the weekend in the mountains. This event is put on by the Revelstoke Rotary Club for the Inbound and Outbound Students of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. It's a great event and the student always have a lot of fun. See morte for photo's. | | Posted by Geoff Collier on Feb 11, 2012 Our club hosted the annual Rotary Funspiel at the Curling Club on Saturday, and a great time was had by all. The winners this year were a team including Peter Schwirtz from Sun Life, who just edged out a team of Rotarians from Merritt. There was some question about the validity of our ranking methods, and a formal protest may be in the works … or not. Coming in at the tail end and setting a new record for questionable curling talent was the Sue Porter / Matt Dundas team, but the good news is that they get to pick the charity to be targeted for any surplus we have after everything is added up. Personally I managed to make a team from Rotaract very happy by raising one of their rocks into the house on the last end of the last game, giving them four, and losing our 3 point lead, the game, and the bonspiel in one moment of breathtaking incompetence.
