| Posted by Lisa Myhre on Dec 10, 2012 | | | | | December 8th, 2012 Wasrag Members, Rotarians, Friends, Here's a wonderful way to support Rotary! You can help Rotary win up to 10 million United Airlines travel miles. It won't cost you a penny - and the miles will be used to help numerous Rotary projects. In the past Charity Miles have provided transportation for Rotary International's Gift of Life surgical teams. Last year, these teams traveled to Haiti and El Salvador, where volunteer doctors and nurses from the United States performed life-saving heart surgery on many children and provided important training for local doctors. Charity Miles have also helped Rotary International transport Iraqi children with birth defects to U.S. hospitals for treatments they cannot receive at home. Charity Miles are also used to send volunteers to help immunize children during National Immunization Days. And, Charity Miles provide airfare for financially disadvantaged Rotary youth exchange students so they may live and study overseas for one school year, enabling 8,000 secondary school students to study abroad in 80 countries around the world. All you have to do is go to Charity Miles and vote for Rotary International. You can vote once a day until December 25th. Rotary is currently leading with 505 votes. And don't just vote yourself! Share this message with your network of friends. If you are a Facebooker, a Twitterer or a Texter - get cracking and spread this message. Remember, by winning these Charity Miles, we can bring smiles to the faces of thousands of underprivileged children! Warm Rotary regards, Ron Denham, Bill Boyd Chair - Wasrag Vice Chair - Wasrag | |

| Posted by Lisa Myhre Josh Stevenson, Cass County Land Commissioner provided a comprehensive overview of the history and current workings of the Cass County Land Department. In the period from1900 to 1920 lumber mills bought land for harvesting for nearly nothing, harvest the timber and let the property laps into tax forfeiture. In the period form 1920 through 1940 the county stepped in and took control of 255,00 acres of abandoned land. By that time there were very few acres that had not been harvested.
Today the Department is overseen by the Cass County Commissioners. The Land Department currently has a staff of seven specialists. A forest management plan was developed via a process of public meetings.
Department activities include wildlife management, sale of timber, reforestation, forest inventory, agriculture and gravel leases and easements pursuant to a comprehensive forest management plan and coordinates management with state and federal resources management agencies. The department also oversees all county tax forfeit land sales and the land exchanges.
The Land Department is self sufficient. More than half of the revenues come from timber sales. Additional revenues come from a variety of avenues including assessments on utility easements that are based on land values as well as fire wood sales.
Citizens and visitors alike have realized great benefits. |
