JEAN MORDO introduced the speaker, our own club member ARLEY MARLEY. His greatest investment of time in Rotary this year will be his involvement in Enterprise Leadership Conference. The program is organized to introduce high school juniors to business and entrepreneurship. It started many years ago in the Oakland Club but seemed to be a well-kept secret for a while.  The San Jose Club developed the program in recent past years and it is now expanding to include clubs in our area.  A program was started at the Los Altos Club this past spring with the following members ARLEY MARLEY, JEAN MORDO, PP SAM HARDING, JERRY TOMANEK, DUANNI HURD and during the spring session GREG HARTWELL and PHIL SHEMANSKI joined the team.

Arley opened the program with a discussion of the Enterprise Leadership Conference for 2014. The mission is to enhance leadership skills of high school juniors through a working introduction to the opportunities, benefits and challenges of establishing a business or providing services in the free enterprise system. Thirteen clubs have joined forces to recruit 60 students from our area this past year and divide them into 10 teams (three girls and three boys) from 20 high schools in Santa Clara Valley.

Arley MarleyThrough a video featuring a number of past and current student participants in the ELC program we learned that it enhances leadership skills of high school juniors, ARLEY explained that business leaders from Rotary Clubs present key business concepts; management structure, finance, marketing, product/service development, human resources to help students develop a virtual company with a virtual product.

ARLEY attributes much of his Rotary career success to his late wife, Mary, a past member of the Rotary Club of Los Altos.  In her last days when discussing the excellent Youth Programs she had been involved with and the possibility of doing even more to expand the Rotary programs for Youth, Mary’s comment, “Stay focused on this. It is near and dear to my heart” has stayed with him and it is his passion to do so.

The ELC program is set for undecided juniors who don’t know what they want to do in life. Although grade point average is not a focus for the selection committee, to get in the program, many schools require each junior to have a 3.0 grade average. The program last for 3 days and the students are taken in a luxury bus down to Asilomar in Pacific Grove, becoming team members with other students they haven’t known before. At the conclusion, company business plans are presented by each team to a panel of Rotary business judges to secure financing and feedback.  The program is free to students because the sponsoring Rotary Clubs pay to cover their stay at Asilomar.  Our Club contributes $6500, so we also want some local students from Los Altos in the program. Marley said at ELC, we give students something they can’t get anywhere else.
