Harris County Judge ed Emmett returned to Rotary Skyline to update a packed crowd on issues affecting the County from hurricane season to Astrodome options, to mental health to transportation. As is tradition at RCHS for visiting community leaders, Judge Emmett was interviewed/bantered by Corbett Parker. Following another RCHS recent tradition, Children's Book Author/Skyliner Melissa Williams presented Judge Emmett with book to sign that will be donated to local library. MORE PICS

April 30 - RCHS was proud to host Anya Angermeier, Volunteer Coordinator for the Houston Food Bank. Ms. Angermeier has spoken to us before and hosted us for service projects. We learned that:
- Houston Food Bank (i) is largest (physical) or second largest (distributions) food bank in US, (ii) Distributes 50M meals annually and feeds 137K people each week
- 1 in 4 Southeast Texas children live under the poverty line, with 66K people hungry each day
- Donation of $1 serves 3 nutritious meals, each volunteer hour equates to $75 value, and they are always looking for food drive hosts
- Now have an emergency pantry to serve needs of walk-ups

UPDATE (4/16): On Tuesday, April 16th the Dynamo Sidekicks hosted Dine With Dynamo (recap) event at BBVA Compass Stadium. Fans were allowed the unique experience of taking on the players in fun games from washers to air hockey to free throws to cornhole, then have picnic dinner. All profits (about $15K) from the event went towards the construction of soccer field. Rotary Skyline through the work of Vicki Brentin (who raised much of the money working for a previous project) and Councilman Corbett Daniel Parker (RCHS Founder and Dynamo Charities Board Member) is excited to announce they are teaming up with Rotary District 5890 and Dynamo Charities to build a youth soccer field (U8) in Houston's East End at the Community Family Centers. |

Joining Kristen was Skyliner Vicki Brentin (running her 8th of 12 half-marathons she intends to run in 2013), John Brentin (Vicki's husband) and Michael Barnes (husband of Skyliner D'Lisa Simmons & influential for start of RCHS).

We were honored to have Pierce Bush as our speaker at April 9, 2013 tell us at Big Brothers, Big Sisters. He was absolutely fabulous and SO passionate about the important work that he is doing. Pierce has been a Big Brother for 4 years and is their VP of Development during their current capital campaign aimed at increasing the number of kids they serve from 1,700 to 3,000 as well as improving the location and facilities. The majority of the kids come to them from the court system, and father figures. Pierce was invited to the club by Skyliner Dilanka Seimon who is a Big Brother himself and member of BBBS' Resource Development Committee. |

Every year, The Rotary Club of Houston Skyline host a service project for Christmas. This year, our service committee has decided to help make The Ruiz Family's holiday season brighter. Rotary members & friends are asked to select an item(s) from ONLINE FORM showing items needed and wanted. Not necessary to gift wrap, however it is preferred with clear identification of the child the present is being gifted to. RCHS was blessed to have Michelle Merhar (recovering financial analyst, current Fox 26 Morning Traffic Reporter) talk to us about how the traffic report comes together (and why there even is a traffic report at 4am). Michelle brought her husband Danny (we found out he is one of only a hand full of Skyliner Melissa Williams' childhood friends who got to meet Melissa's real pet Iggy the Iguana in 5th grade ... the inspiration behind her Iggy the Iguana book series.) and discussed his dedication to keeping her awake and playing chauffeur when Michelle carried the overnight 740AM radio show. We learned from Michelle that her day starts at 2:30am and involves communicating/monitoring a number of local agencies and sources.

A big congratulations to Kinkaid sophomore Lauren Siegel (who we heard from at June 5th meeting) and friends for their organizing a soccer camp for the kids of the Julia C. Hester House where we RCHS previously led Step Forward Day 2011. The Rotary Club of Houston Skyline stepped up big sponsoring the t-shirts and a Dynamo ball for each attendee, Dynamo Charities provided tickets to upcoming game, Yellow Cab Houston provided gift bags for the kids. A big thanks to Councilmen Jack Christie & Jerry Davis who each came out to speak to the camp attendees about education, health and nutrition.

District Governor Rhonda Walls-Kerby presented each amazing woman with her award at the District 5890 Conference on June 1, 2012. Rotary International has three top level awards: (i) RI Service Above Self Award(ii) Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Services, and (iii) The Distinguished Service Award. RCHS had a fantastic March 6th meeting celebrating and thanking volunteers of Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center for completing our 5th blood drive, thanking and presenting certificates of appreciation to Pink Door's Cortney Cole & Lee Mitchell (Chair) for partnering with RCHS for My Pink Valentine Auction, and then heard from Candace Beeke (Editor of Houston Business Journal). Ms. Beeke was on fire explaining the mission of HBJ, and clearly is the perfect leader for Houston's leading business newspaper.

Rotary Skyline hit the lottery getting Miss Texas USA 2012 Brittany Booker to be our speaker. Brittany discussed her impetus for entering pageant (Christian faith), service platform (serving special needs children, as she has already done as a regular volunteer at Hope Village Home for the Mentally Challenged), meal she most looks forward to when Miss USA pageant is over (mac n cheese), and advice she has received from previous winners (don't try to be "Miss Texas" just be yourself). Young ladies do not come any sweeter or more genuine. We loved hearing from Miss Texas USA!

Rotary Skyline was honored to host Harris County's newest Commissioner (Precinct 4) R. Jack Cagle to the club on Tuesday, January 10th. Commissioner Cagle was interviewed (by RCHS Founder and Bellaire City Councilman Corbett Daniel Parker) on a variety of topics from where did his nickname "Cactus Jack" come from, to what lesson he learned while being Harris County Civil Court-at-Law No. 1 that he has applied to new job, to County's finances and relationship with state legislators.  |

On Oct. 27th Tia Bonham (Client Service Mgr of Early Childhood for the Julia C. Hester House) surprised Corbett Parker (Step Forward Day 2011Chair) at the office with a great big thank you note from the kids (with each kid signing cut outs of their hands) for Rotary Skyline's efforts during Step Forward Day 2011 in partnership with Pepperdine University's Houston Alumni Chapter. Participants will tell you that we certainly were served more than we served others. A great (albeit HOT) day!

Reginald Adams (& his Museum of Cultural Arts Houston- MOCAH) is in Lyon, France from 6/12-7/5 for a service project at the Le Centre Leon-Berard, a children's cancer center. MOCAH will be working with terminally ill kids to co-create a mosaic sculpture that will pay homage to the hope, resilience and determination of the young cancer patients. |

Tuesday, Dec. 14th (7:00-9:30), Skyline will be getting together for the holidays to celebrate together!
We will have White Elephant, so be sure to bring a gift to the event. The gift should not be gender orientated and should be roughly worth $10 to $15.

District 5890 passed the $500,000 milestone in giving to The Rotary Foundation for Rotary’s $200 Mil Polio Plus Challenge! At 60 cents per dose, this represents over 800,000 children who will not suffer the pain and paralysis of Polio thanks to you.

Keep Houston Beautiful recently informed the Museum of Cultural Arts Houston (MOCAH) that the Earth Day Festival Mural: Paint for the Planet was been selected as an Honorable Mention Award Winner in the 2010 Mayor's Proud Partners Awards Program. This community art project was organized by Rotary Houston Skyline's Reginald Adams (MOCAH's President/ CEO) and Ann Wright (District 5890 Public Image Committee Chair) sponsored by the Rotary District 5890.
