The Rotary Club of Edmonton Glenora’s Signature Community Project
The Intercultural Child & Family Centre is located at McCauley School in Edmonton’s inner city and has been in operation since February 1, 2010. It is focused on serving immigrant and refugee families and promoting intercultural early childhood practices within Edmonton.
The Centre was started by a group of newly arrived refugee mothers from Eritrean and Ethiopian communities, who identified a need for childcare arrangements that would allow them to enter the workforce or pursue training.
The Centre responds to the life circumstances of newcomer children and families, in particular families with refugee backgrounds; it promotes inter-cultural early learning and practices; and, supports the entry, retention and advancement of immigrant and refugee women in the early Childhood and Care sector.
The Centre currently serves 65 immigrant and refugee children aged 0-12 and their families. It is a natural and vital hub for supporting families, developing and sharing knowledge within Edmonton about inter-cultural child-care and helping immigrant and refugee women enter the workforce.
The Glenora Rotary selected the Centre as our signature project because of the Centre’s existing contributions to meeting the needs of new refugee and immigrant families in our inner City by providing early childhood and family services, and our recognition of the Centre’s potential.
To be sustainable both financially and operationally, the Centre requires additional funds. The Glenora Rotary supports the Centre to the goal of self-sustainability through our fund-raising and capacity-building efforts with the Centre.
