I finished the first period and in the second [period] and finished five classes. Very soon I will have English classes. Thank you and God bless you friend I'm in college and thanks for all your help.

This is a greeting from Leonardo Montufar to everyone in Champaign West Rotary. Our Club has provided a scholarship for Leonardo Montufar, a (former) resident of the Children’s Home in Azacualpa Honduras with a scholarship to help him pay for college. He started classes in February and recently finished his first semester.

To Leonardo: You are very welcome! We are so glad you're in college, and we are honored to help with expenses. Work hard and do well in college!

The message comes via Debbie Hirschi, who continues to talk with Leonardo over email. Thank you, Debbie, for the update!

I just returned home from a trip with several fellow Champaign West Rotarians to the Children’s Home in Azacualpa, Honduras.  This project began as an idea by Debbie Hirschi in 2005 for our club’s International service, and over the years we have been involved in various projects with the home and the Rotary neighborhood.  In addition to visiting the Children’s Home, we were able to watch fellow Rotarians fit 3 individuals with BUMP prosthetic arms.  To sum up the entire trip - it was so inspiring.

What a treat - our club meeting was at the historic Virginia Theatre today.  Steven Bentz gave a background of the theatre since it was built in 1921.  Very interesting to hear about the stories of how the threate was built, how it got it's name, shows that have played at the theatre, and what has been involved in its restoration.  Champaign Park District has done a wonderful job of restoring the theatre.  Then the club was divided into 2 groups and a detailed tour Many Rotarians stated they thoroughly enjoyed the offsite meeting.

A great time was had by everyone at the CWR visits Hardy’s Reindeer Ranch.  The weather was “Chamber” perfect and the various activities were fun.  Anita Broeren’s son, Stan and Chad Hoffman’s family were the only ones who found all 8 stations within the maze.  The hay ride was a hit, as well as the reindeer tour/feeding.   I think Paula Walters found her next pet!  J

Pictures from the day have been uploaded to clubrunner.  Go to the admin page, half way down on the left side is “edit photo albums”.   Click on that and then click the view button for Hardy’s pictures.

CWR Honduran Dinner

The CWR International Committee hosted a Honduran Dinner at the home of Mike and Debbie Hirschi’s home on Friday July 12.  The food was provided by the Mas Amigo’s taco truck and Jane Solon and Kevin Yonce served as bartenders for the margaritas.  Forty-seven (47) Rotarians and guests listened to Honduran radio streaming live from San Pedro Sula while dining in the garden on a beautiful evening.  After dinner, Mike Hirschi, gave a brief history of our club’s involvement in Honduras and what is planned for the future.

Champaign West Rotary is ordinary people coming together to do extraordinary things.

As a mentor associated with a local mentoring organization for the past 10 years, I have had the pleasure to interact with several young men that, for a variety of reasons, do not have a strong father figure in their lives.  One young man I have mentored for several years has not had a father at home for most of his life and, to make life more difficult, his mother has been in prison the majority of his life.  He and his three brothers currently live on their own in an apartment in Urbana.  The oldest has legal guardianship for his three younger brothers.

The “Pickle” is one of our Club's popular outings, and is just one of the ways we have a great time giving back to others! We have donated $23,385 to the fight against cancer, with $12,400 of that directed directly to Glioblastoma research right here at Carle in the past two years.

The Rotary’s motto – Service Above Self – is a way of life for Rotarians.  And no one is a better example of ‘Service Above Self’ than our veterans

To promote active Rotary service, in 2011 Champaign West Rotary Club developed Veterans Day One on One, an invaluable program to honor our country’s service men and women.  Rotarians invite veterans to dinner to honor and pay tribute for their service providing an opportunity for Rotarians and those who served in our nation’s military to connect, express genuine appreciation, and share stories of their personal or loved ones’ experiences.  Soldiers are extraordinary, with the ability to influence and impact us all in incredible ways.

Thanks to all who attended the Ghost Train Fun!  There were some great costumes worn by Scott & Rita, Chris &  Emily, and Art! Fun was had by all as we enjoyed our family outing.  Hamburgers and hotdogs off the grill filled our belly's while hot choclate kept us warm.  No one got too scared on the train or in the box car...... This was our first time doing this event for Rotary and we are looking forward to next year.  A special thanks to our Ghost Train Committee: Laura, Jane, Art, and Eileen.

2012 Trip to Honduras Children’s Home

Champaign West Rotary members made a trip down to Honduras from November 14-18, 2012.  Rotarians Woody Chenault, Debbie Hirschi, Mike Hirschi and Kevin Yonce flew to San Pedro Sula and met with a Member of the SPS Rotary Club to discuss future plans between the two clubs.  Then on to the Children’s Home in Azacualpa, where we painted the cottage that Champaign West build for the home, we also planting 5 poinsettia plants at the Children’s Home to pay homage to the Champaign West Rotary’s Poinsettia Sales that helps raise money for our work at the Home and in the Azacualpa Community.

On Saturday, October 15th, Champaign West Rotary volunteered at the Champaign Telephone Company's parking lot.  The Illinois vs. Ohio State football game spectator parking is always a hot commodity and the $1,505 in proceeds went directly to Crisis Nursery.

CWR for years has held a golf outing, and our member Mike Dill was always instrumental in organizing this event. Hence the name the Pickle---Dill---Pickle---see the connection? Mike was also called "Pick" by several CWR members and friends.
We generally held this outing at the Lincolnshire Fields Country Club, where several CWR members are members.
