This past year was one of majoraccomplishments for Rotary and your Rotary Foundation.

Extraordinary progress was made toward the eradication of polio. We made history whenIndia was removed from the list of polio-endemic countries — leaving just Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. A difficult road lies ahead, butthanks to the commitment and generosity of Rotarians and friends, we are confident that Rotary will lead the way toward a polio-free world.

Wealso expanded Rotary’s reach in new and effective ways by entering into partnerships with Mercy Ships and UNESCO-IHE. And we built on our recordof humanitarian service by continuing our strong relationships with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, USAID, Aga Khan University, Oikocreditand the Rotary Peace Centers.

Over half a million young people worldwide participated in our New Generations programs. Their involvement inRotary Youth Exchange, Rotaract and Interact clubs, and RYLA events helped them develop skills that they’ll need to become service-mindedcommunity and global leaders - and future Rotarians.

In 2012, The Rotary Foundation also earned top marks from several independent charityevaluators, including the American Institute of Philanthropy, Charity Navigator and the Wise Giving Alliance.

As we look ahead, we can be proudof all that Rotarians have accomplished. I am pleased to share the digital version of the 2011-12 Rotary International and Rotary Foundation AnnualReport (click here), which offers a firsthand look at how Rotarians are working to improve the lives of people in need. I encourageyou to review our annual report carefully, and to share it with others who may be interested in joining, partnering with, or donating toRotary.

Thank you for helping Rotary achieve lasting change in your community and around the world.

 Sharing your skills

The Rotary Foundation’s new grant model provides various ways for Rotarians to use their skills to help others. Vocational training teams enable groups to travel to other countries to learn more about their profession or to teach local professionals, while the Project Enhancement Process (PEP) pilot is providing expertise for projects in water and sanitation.

The Fort McMurray Rotary Clubs were pleased to be able to play host for D.G. Kevin Hilgers and his spouse Janice McNeice on October 26 and 27. On the 26th a very enjoyable dinner was held at the Stonebridge Inn with catering by Smitty's restaurant. D.G. Kevin gave us a very enthusiastic speech with several good ideas on how to get better recognition for Rotary and hopefully more members. We were also pleased to be able to induct two new members, Tim O'Rourke and Nelson Barbosa. Recognition was also given to Frank Seraka and Frank Reitz for reaching new Paul Harris contribution levels.

In this picture are from left to right, Matthew Creighton President of the Oilsands Rotary Club, D.G. Kevin Hilgers, Dan Lemke President of the Fort McMurray Rotary Club and Assistant D.G. Gary Couet.
