Congratulations to our new Club officers!  Assistant District Governor Don Owens officiated for the installation of Club President Wally Owings and this year's Club leaders.  Don highlighted in his remarks the enormous value of helping others.  Despite the sense we sometimes have of so much needing to be done, the value of assistance to each individual in need is often profound.  Don also introduced the new RI theme for this year, "Peace Through Service."  Wally encouraged members to look for the chance to become engaged in either this year's Annual Opportunities Open Golf Tournament or the Bluegrass Festival - or both.  Wally also asked each member to invite at least one guest to a meeting or event this year to help get the Rotary message out and promote new members.  He also encouraged each member to donate to the RI Foundation - every contribution helps and the funds are used to support some of our own projects.  As we launch into a new Rotary year, there will be many challenges and rewards.  Working together we look forward to making a difference, one person at a time.

Setting and achieving a goal of 100% attendance is both a challenging and rewarding aspect of Rotary service.  Meeting this goal requires both commitment and diligence, but it is more than just a measure of attendance.  The exceptional commitment our members show who have met this goal speaks to their active participation in our weekly meetings, committees, projects and ourreach to other Rotary clubs.  The many and varied activities represented by those who achieve 100% attendance enhance the effectiveness and accomplishments we collectively enjoy.  Congratulations to those members who have maintained 100% attendance for the first half of our Rotary year, July-January 2011.  Well done and thank you for your exceptional service!

On 30 December 2011 we were privileged to receive as our speaker Alexa Dantzler.  Alexa told us about the extraordinary research she has done quantifying the content of perchloroethylene (PCE) in dry cleaned fabrics.  PCE is carcinogenic and neurotoxic and is commonly used by many dry cleaners in our area.  Alexa demonstrated that PCE remains in fabrics in varying amounts depending on the type of fabric being cleaned.  PCE is known to be absorbed by the skin which produces the potential for long-term health concerns.  Alexa’s research, which began as a high school science project, eventually involved the participation of the Georgetown University Center for Infectious Disease.  In 2011 Alexa’s research won her first place in the regional science fair, an invitation to present at the annual meeting of the Society of Toxicology, and first place recognition in chemistry by the Central Intelligence Agency.  Alexa’s work has been published by the Journal of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.  Alexa is the daughter of member Will Dantzler and it is an understatement to say that we were enormously impressed by Alexa as a high achieving young woman representative of the best among our high school students.  Well done Alexa and best wishes for continued extraordinary achievements!

Today we were priviledged to have as our guest speaker, Michael Frey, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.  Mr. Frey outlined the fiscal and physical challenges and changes Fairfax County is now facing.  In this excellent summay of where we have been, are now, and will be going, Mr. Frey helped the Club members fully appreciate the changes that are underway.  Certainly the cost of maintaining county servcies is increasing and we will need to be creative and resourceful to meet future requirements.  Mr. Frey also emphasized that land use is undergoing significant change in the county and with 1.1 million residents, it is challenging to retain the suburban quality of residential areas.  Overall, this positive but straighforward assessment of the county's fiscal and physical future was filled with insights and was a great presentation.  Many thanks to Mr. Frey for his time and effort this morning.  Well done!

The Dulles Club once again supported an Honor Air Flight by providing 5 tanks of oxygen and 5 volunteers to help with the Aug. 3 Knoxville contingent trip.  The volunteers were able to hear many interesting war stories right from the Vets themselves.  The four tour buses that transported the Vets from sight to sight were escorted by park police.  No traffic lights or DC traffic to contend with.  Smooth sailing throughout the day!  Their tour began with the Air Force Memorial and then on to the Korean and Viet Nam Memorials.  The next stop was the WWII Monument.  The group consisted of 130 Vets, with half being from WWII and the other half from Korea.  After the visit to the WWII Memorial the buses did a driving tour of some of the highlights of DC.  Each tour bus has a tour guide who explains the sights and shares interesting facts.  Next stop was the Iwa Jima Memorial before going to Arlington National Cemetery for the changing of the guard.  The Vets then were escorted back to the airport for their flight home.  The Rotarians were thanked by everyone for our help.  All 5 Rotarians rode back in the same car and shared the stories of what they saw and learned throughout the day.

The next trip is scheduled for Oct. 5th.  If you have not had the opportunity to attend one of these trips please consider volunteering.   The opportunity to actually speak and hear the stories from WWII Vets is slowly slipping away.  Put the date on your calendar!

Scott Mills spoke at the May 14  club meeting about the Rotary Foundation. He described some projects District 7610 is funding and some new rules changes regarding the use of donations to the Foundation's Annual Programs Fund.

He recounted the story of Jamal, whom Rotarians met in Cameroon as they distributed polio vaccine. Jamal, now three, plays in the streets of his village naked from the waist down. His persistent diarrhea, caused by waterborne parasites, may eventually kill him if he continues to drink polluted water. Fortunately for Jamal, two years ago Rotary funded a three-year project to bring clean, mountain spring water to his village.

Fifty percent of all Rotarian contributions to Rotary International come back to the district; the other fifty percent is used to fund international projects. Funding of the foundation’s administration comes entirely from contributions by individual Rotarians. The Rotary Foundation was rated by Charity Navigator as No. 4 on its list of “Ten Best Charities Everyone’s Head Of.”

The Foundation’s Future Visions Plan will begin in FY 2014 and will allow each district to fund up to 50% of its funds on community projects, up from a current ceiling of 20%. The other 50% will be able to be used for global grants to fund humanitarian projects, scholarships and vocational exchanges that target needs in six focus areas: peace and conflict resolution/prevention, disease prevention/treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, education and basic literacy, and economic and community development.

Last year District 7610 donated $622,000 to the foundation, making it third among US clubs and 8th worldwide.

Evan and Kirk provided us with facts and statistics about the well drilling programs in Zambia that the Dulles Airport Club has been supporting for the past few years.   We have heard our members Andrew Wade and Scott Didericksen speak about their trip to Zambia and how our help has changed the lives of the people who live in the small villages in Zambia, who before we drilled the bore holes, had no clean water.    Evan and Kirk added to the story.  Kirk started out by telling the story about the first time he was in Zambia and how he saw a little boy fill a cup out of a stream.  The water was brown and muddy.  He knew right there and then that something had to be done.  How could these little children be drinking this dirty water that he would not even let his animals drink?  The year was 2003.  Since this time over 200 well have been drilled, 3,500 BioSand Filters installed and approximately 500,000 are now the recipients of clean water.    Seeds of Hope partners with organizations like Rotary and churches to fund these projects.  Without clubs like ours the progress that has been made in Zambia would never be possible.  Without these wells children’s growth becomes stunted and their life expectancy would only be around 38 years old.  Clean water allows these communities to change.    If you would like more information please visit their website – www.sohip.org.

March, 2011 – #3

Dear Friends

It is amazing how quickly the time passes. It has been almost a month since the FanFest occurred on 2.13.11 and we are still reaping the benefits of having almost 10,000 official fans crossing home plate. I know I sound like a broken record by now, but thanks again for your expressed support.

We knew we would have a good turnout, but to have that many people join us was truly awesome. For next year, like they said in the movie "Jaws" - with support like this "... we are going to need a bigger boat". We are already working on improving your expectations for FanFest 2012.

We are now working on the plans for the Groundbreaking Event. We cannot yet announce a date but we expect to do so shortly. As you can imagine, there are many moving parts but we are still on track for 2012. We have engaged our architects, engineers and contractors in an attempt to assure delivery of the ballpark next year for you.

We appreciate your support and patience. I assure you everyone is working very, very hard to prepare for the announcement that the shovel is going into the ground. It is our goal to make that proclamation very soon. Look for the other events we are planning through the balance of the year on our website at www.loudounhounds.com. Also, check www.loudounhoundsgear.com for some great Hounds merchandise. We are adding new items every month like the Hounds jersey that's on sale now.

Again, thank you.

Wally wants everyone to know that we will be having a Club Social on April 18th at the German Military Hanger at the airport. We are always looking for new members and this is a great way to introduce them to the club and what we do. Here's the catch, you have to let Wally know if you are coming, and the name of your guest by Wednesday the 13th. With security in todays climate you can never be too careful. However, there will not be any patdowns by TSA.

Please call Wally for more details at 703-471-6161, ext 15,or email Wally to let him know if you will be attending and the name of your guest. This event is being hosted by the Club's good friend General Hasso Koertge. The rumor is that there will be beer and brats. Let's all plan on attending to say thanks to Hasso and his wife!

Member Will Dantzler, with the guidance of member Scott Didericksen, was able to secure close to $7,000 for Holt International by working with neighboring Rotary Clubs to pool their simplified grant eligibility to win a grant and ultimately make a big impact in helping Holt.   Will is the previous Chairman of the Board of Holt, but more significant a past recipient of Holt's mission.  Holt's mission is to help abandoned children throughout the world by finding them homes.  Will was abandoned in Korea and 55 years ago it was the Holt organization that brought him to the US and found him a permanent home.   Right now there is a big need in Haiti.  With the help of many club members, Will,on a tripm made to Haiti was able to bring the children suitcases full of soccer balls.  Holt has a program they run in Haiti named Fanmi Ansanm.  This program reaches out to families at risk.  The children are housed in an orphanage while their parent/parents are sent to a training program.  The goal is to reunite the family after 6 months.  This has been a very successful program and so far has helped over 200 families.

On April 16th Holt is hosting an event during the week of their 55th Anniversary Forum that would be an excellent opportunity to learn more about international adoption.  If you know anyone who might be interested in attending  please reach out to Will for more information.

March Wayne Chiles spoke week about the success of the ShelterBox project and how stockpiling boxes can prepare them for quick responses.  ShelterBox has shipped a little over 130k of these survivor boxes over the years, and without "stockpiling" these boxes, it would be very difficult to coordinate the immediate deployment just after a disaster.

An amazing fact is that they deployed 28k, or just over 20% of their accumulated box totals just to Haiti last year.  Realizing the logistics of immediately sending boxes within the first 24-48 hours, while at the same time trying to raise awareness can truly limit the impact that the program has.  It would be hard to imagine any organization other than a Governmental body, being able to coordinate these deployments in the timely manner that this non-profit does, let alone for the fraction of the costs involved.

Wayne pointed out that the new upgrades in water filtration supports 10 people from originally 6 months now to 18 months.  With each ShelterBox costing $1000, providing shelter and necessary supplies for 10 people for at least 18 months amounts to 18c/day.  Amazingly, though the water filtration device lifespan is 30,000 liters, the tents, shovels, stoves, blankets are in many cases are still being used well beyond what was originally planned.

Disasters of the magnitude of the Haitian earthquake & tsunami, the Indonesian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, fortunately don't happen that frequently.  However, with multiple smaller natural disasters worldwide every year, ShelterBox program can truly be a life saver for the hundreds of thousands/millions of survivors of these events.  We should all be proud of the ability of the Dulles Airport Rotary's commitment to support this program, and that it was all created by a fellow Rotarian in England.

The following is a list of the records of the location of the recent ShelterBoxes that we've purchased:

1.     #5683 sponsored by the Club in Sep 2008 went to the Swabi District in Pakistan,

2.     #6769 sponsored by the Club in Dec 2009 was deployed to Port-au-Prince in late Jan 2010

3.     #7650 sponsored by the Club in Jan 2010 was deployed to Port-au-Prince in late Jan 2010

4.     #7967-68 sponsored by the Club's Foundation in late Feb deployed to Port-au-Prince in Mar 2010

5.     #11444 sponsored by the Club's Foundation in late Feb were deployed to Port-au-Prince in Aug 2010

Lew Parker, owner of Willowcroft  Winery and a sponsor of our May 7th Blue Grass Festival spoke to the club at the Friday, March 18th meeting.  Lew shared his knowledge of the history of wine in the US and specifically Virginia.  There are 3 billion bottles of wine produced in the United States every year.  Most of the US wine comes from California which has over 5,000 wineries.  Wine has been a beverage of choice through the centuries because of the low PH content.  Bacteria and organisms cannot grow in wine the same way that they can grow in water.   Wine was popular because it was much safer to drink.  In 1607 the Jamestown settlers planted the first grape crop in the New World.  They were looking for a business opportunity and believed winemaking would be profitable.  The grapes they grew and the wine made from it was bitter.  The settlers decided to import grape cuttings from France and Italy.  Unfortunately that didn’t work either.  The soil in Jamestown and the US in general didn’t work with European grapes because of fungus.  It wasn’t until a Ukrainian immigrant, Dr. Frank a pathologist found a way to control fungus that the wine industry in the Eastern US started to prosper. This didn’t happen until the 1960-1970 time period.  Lew bought his farm out in Loudoun County in 1979.  In 1980 his first grape crop did not survive.  In 1981 he planted again and today those same vines survive.  He has 12,000 vines on his farm and produces 30,000 bottles of wine a year.   Willowcroft wines will be available to sample and purchase at our Blue Grass Festival.

At our March 11th meeting member Ryan Rauner spoke about college basketball and the long road to March Madness.  It all begins in November when the college basketball team play outside of their own conference which helps them gauge how they will do against teams that they might end up playing in March or teams that their competition may play.  January, February  and the first part of March is conference play.  Every game played is calculated into the RPI (Ratings Percentage Index).  The RPI determines your standing in the NCAA Tournament.  The RPI takes into account each teams wins and losses, the wins and losses of their opponents and those of their opponents opponents.  The strength of a teams schedule is very important.  Ryan's alma mater, Villanova has an 37 RPI.  Ryan gave us tips on how to pick your bracket for the tournament.  Thank you Ryan for sharing with us this morning.  I'm sure if you have any questions Ryan would be more than happy to speak with you.

Charter Member, Johnny Chapman shared the history of our club during our meeting this past Friday. The Dulles International Rotary Club was chartered on February 23, 1980, on the 75th anniversary of Rotary International. The club orinally met at the airport terminal. It became known as "the make-up club to the world". The Bailey's Crossroads club was their sponsoring club. Johnny shared some interesting bits of information about the club. One of their big fundraisers at the time was collecting currency from travelers at the airport. They had a box set up in the terminal by customs and travelers would donate their currency as they left. At one time they also collected the coins in the fountain at Reston Town Center. One of the most interesting things they did was to tour the Concord after a meeting. One of the members at the time worked for British Airways and was able to take them on this tour. The first female member to the club was Marilyn Williamson who was introduced to the club by Howard Manas. It wasn't until a Supreme Court Decision in 1987 that women were able to join Rotary. Thank you Johnny for sharing the history of the Dulles International Aiport Rotary with all the current members.

Warren spoke to our club this morning concerning budget issues that pertain to Loudoun County Schools. Warren is a long time board member and he so eloquently shared his knowledge of the workings of the Loudoun County budget and it's impact on school children in the county. Warren was joined by one of the other board members, Mr. Tom Marshall. Both board members encourage Loudoun County residents to appear before the Board of Supervisors at one or more of their public meetings to support the current budget.

Our club welcomed two students,Zach Newman and Leah Day along with their sponsoring teacher, Jennifer Rogers this morning. They discussed the three projects that they are currently working on. The first is providing baby items to needy new mothers at Mercy Hospital in Sierra Leone. These moms are in need of cloth diapers, infant clothing, baby washcloths, diaper pins and receiving blankets. Members of our club brought in donations today to help. If anyone else would like to make a donation you can reach them by calling Kimberly Wiss at 571-434-4400. The Ambassadors are also fundraising to build a playground for children at a school in Bangalore, India. The third project is a weekend feeding program for children who live below the poverty line in Meadowland Elementary School in Loudon County. Many times the only food they get is the free breakfast and lunch provided by the school. The Global Ambassadors provide food for these students to take home with them for the weekend. This incredible group of young people are considering joining us as an Interact Club in the fall. Roddy Dean has been working to accomplish this.

Mark is no stranger to the Dulles Rotary Club. He was a former member who reapplied for membership after his business travel slowed down. Mark's new career keeps him in the Washington area now and he is once again able to be with us. Howard Manas is Mark's sponsor. Please make sure you give a warm welcome to our newest member, Mark. Thank you to John Holler whose induction ceremony inspires not only our new members but our current members and truly makes us all proud to be a part of such a wonderful organization.

Dulles Rotarians, I think last weeks email about the weather may have caused old "Mother Nature" to give us that knock out last evening. Sorry about that.It was just brought to my attention by Bill Cooksey and Rich Langguth that Fairfax County schools have already announced that schools will be closed tomorrow; therefore we will not be having our normally scheduled meeting. Weather permitting; next week will be back on schedule with Club Assembly on Friday February 4th. After our normal club business update as part of club assembly, Mary Ann Imgram will present a video of the Honor Air program that she and several others participated in last October. Please plan to attend, not only to participate in Club Assembly, but also to share in the experience that Mary Ann, Rich Langguth, Rich McCary, John Holler, Karen McCarthy & Jerry Guido participated in. This is a great program and the short video gives the rest of us a glimpse of what we helped support.I look forward to seeing everyone next week, and don't forget that prospective members and guests are always welcomed. Yours in Service, Tony Nerantzis

This past Friday Chad spoke to our club about the counties program that provides students career preparation and experience within the districts Residential Construction Program and the Student Auto Repair and Sales Program. These programs provide students with real world experience. Upon graduation from the academies that offer these skills they are ready to start a career in the field for which they are trained. FATE (Foundation for Applied Technical Education, Inc.) is looking for board members to help with these programs. More information is available at www.fcps.edu/DIS/OCTE or by contacting chad at Chad.Maclin@fcps.edu.

On 17 June we installed new Club officers during a wonderful dinner and evening at the National Conferece Center. Scott Didericksen stepped down as our Club President after a great year in which we supported matching grants for water wells in Zambia, provided scholarships, supported local charities, funded Shelter Boxes, and numerous other charitable activities. Tony takes the helm with the ship running at full speed. But no matter the pace, Tony is exactly the right person to fill Scott's shoes (size 14 or 15 I think). Many thanks to Judy Craun for all the hard work she put into creating such a great evening for us all. And best wishes to Tony at the beginning of what we are sure will be our best year yet!

On 11 June Patrick and Sherry Coleman visited our club. Patrick and Sherry represent our partner club in Zambia and have been instrumental in helping to organize and manage the water projects we have jointly conducted there. Together we have been successful in drilling seven wells in Zambia. The provision of water has been an enormously significant event in these communities and has greatly improved their quality of life. We are truly fortunate to have such wonderful partners in this program to provide clean water for people who are without.

Congratulations to Dulles International Airport Rotary Club Past Preseident Andrew Wade for his award of the Rotary Foundation District Service Award!  The award was presented at our 2 October 2009 meeting by Former District Governor Travis White.  Andrew clearly made outstanding contributions in the full spirit of Rotary International to the enhancement of quality of life for the villages in Zambia who benefited from our bore hole projects.  Andrew's personal commitment to ensuring that these projects were executed professionally and well resulted in his decision to travel to Africa to see for himself.  His outstanding example of selfless service to others is a high standard to which all Rotrians may aspire.
