Larry Purrity was our speaker this evening and he moved to
Ashtabula County five years ago. He works as a volunteer at
Hemlock Springs Golf Course and told the story of how he tried
to get the previous manager to allow a youth program there.
When told that the management didn't want kids on the course,
Larry bided his time until he saw that new management had
taken over. That manager, Jim Maruna, agreed and now there
are discussions with The First Tee of Cleveland to be involved,
because they are a national program. Larry is trying for a one-
on-one approach with the youths, which he sees as the future
of golf. He reached out to other courses in the area to form a
group, Golf Ashtabula County, to pool resources to promote
the courses and golfing in the County. He also discussed the
many improvements made at Hemlock Springs recently. He
closed by saying that there would be an outing at the course
on 7/3 and sponsored by Urban Meyer to raise funds for the
inner-city Lunch Box Program.
