Another really interesting Rotary meeting at the Barcelo Old Town in the Centre of Prague. We welcomed members and friends, heard from speakers about youth exchange programmes, mentorship for women setting out in careers in politics, toasted clubs in France and Puerto Rico, linked with Rotary in Dresden and heard from Christian (that's me) about some of the community activities I have been up to in the past. All with good company, delightful conversation, excellent food and of course good Czech beer.

Interested in joining? ... get in touch, new members and guests always welcome.

The meeting of the Rotary Club of Prague International yesterday evening contained one highlight after another. The meeting was opened by our President Vlasta Krahulcova who, with the other members, introduced the guests and was followed by Sarita Chintakanond, a Director from the Thai Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB). Sarita gave a very interesting account of how TCEB encourages and assists companies and organisations to come to Thailand to hold events and conventions. The services offered by TCEB are extensive and range from assisting with the logistics to financial support for larger events.

ImageSo what do Rotarians (and prospective members) get up to in their leisure time. They take the train on a rainy Saturday morning from Prague to Roudnice nad Labem and make a day of it cycling back through the countryside to Prague. Castles, canals, rope ferries, a glass of beer are all part of the rich tapestry of experiences along the way.

Thanks to those of you who supported our Rajsamand schools project and  especially to Bara Nováková and Blanka Francová who helped to run the Indian Food fund-raising, we were able to give 200,000 rupees (66.000 Kč) to help three schools in 2013.

Club President Gerry Tipple was able to visit India for the presentation ceremony and revisited  Guchalo ka Gura, one of the schools we helped last year, where we also provide winter pullovers.

You may not think it from the pictures, but it does get cold there!

In the primary schools of Upper and Lower Sadra there are 50 children from nursery to grade 5 and over 100 children from nursery to grade 8 and they were each given school bags, uniforms, blankets, mats, exercise books and writing materials. Schools were provided with some kitchen utensils, furniture  and  some musical and sports equipment.

Lots of photos on our flickr pages.

Our club sent 20,000Kc to Shelterbox for its typhoon Haiyan appeal. That's enough to cover one life-sustaining box which holds a tent and all the essential tools for a family of 10. See the Shelterbox website for updates of the great work they do there. Image

Naomi Sullivan-Callender helped us achieve a club milestone and became our 40th active member when she was inducted into the club at a special ceremony in Nashua, New Hampshire.

Watch Casey Holt, our own Club membership chair perform the honours  in this short video.

Naomi will get a special warm welcome back - as a member - when she and David return to Prague in the Spring.

Another great way to help!

With the kind cooperation of Mr. kirti Raj Gurjar, Raffles Europe will donate 3% of the proceeds from its annual stock clearance sale which is being held from 29 November to 1 December. For something different for christmas, why not check out their great furniture sale. 3% of all sale proceeds will go to our project! Click on the Indian food helps! tab above to find out more.

Our DG Irena standing next to the statue of T.G. Masaryk in Castle Topolcianky, Slovakia where the founding President liked to spend some time every year.

DG Irena is following his footsteps by visiting every club in the district.

On this occasion, RC Nitra Harmony held a memorial meeting to remember TG Masaryk, with lectures at the Castle on Sat 26th Oct and DG Irena even got to sleep in the
President's apartment. Our district 2240 is in fact one of the few remaining institutions based on the former republic of Czechoslovakia so Rotary is doing a lot to keep his memory alive.

Ten of the best from Bristol! T

Ten Rotarians from our partner club Bristol Breakfast joined us for a merry weekend of walking, talking and eating our way around the highlights of Český raj. Ably guided by Petr Smejcky and cheered by the good humour of our guests as well as fair weather for the enterprise, we wandered around the best parts of Český raj just as Autumn leaves were falling.  It was a rare pleasure and a super break from our usual routine.

The photographs tell the story best. See them all here

Club members wholeheartedly endorse Irena Brichta one of its founder members and dedicated Rotarian as District Governor for 2013-2014.

We know that a lot of club support is needed to ensure a successful year in the District so member's enthusiasm is a welcome boost.

Several club members supported a school project organised by the family of former members Dilip & Jyoti Kothari in rural Rajasthan, India. This year we helped a small school with >50 children in a Bhil village. We bought unifroms, mats, personal care products and books for the children as well as some much needed extra equipment for the school.

A great day for the kids from the village as well as one visiting Rotarian from Prague

The 2011 Dragon Boat Charity Challenge Presentation Ceremony

A very rewarding cheque presentation ceremony took place at The Palace Hotel on September 9th. Rewarding for the nominated charities, ZIVOT 90, Sananim and Nadace nase Dítě who each received 170,000 Kc from the proceeds of this year's Dragon Boat charity Challenge. It was also very rewarding for all our sponsors and particpating teams and members involved in this tremendous organisation to see such a great outcome from all our efforts.

On March 31st, a party of seven Rotarians and partners from Prague visited our partner club, Bristol Breakfast in the south-west of England.
It was a very enjoyable trip as the members of BB not only accommodated us in their homes, but arranged lots of interesting activities for us.

The amazing Clifton suspension Bridge
As well as walking over this amazing bridge, we walked through the old port center of Bristol and visited the fascinating SS Great Britain.
Evening entertainments were great fun, including a skittles evening at a traditional English pub.
Generous scoring meant the ladies team skittled out the men.

On Friday 8th April Past President of Rotary International, Frank J Devlyn came to our regular meeting. Frank is a great speaker who inspired and entertained us with stories of his Rotary Experiences.

Picture shows Frank with two visiting Rotary Exchange Scholars.

The RI theme during Frank's presidency was Create Awareness-Take Action . Still very relevant today.

On Friday 25 March we had the pleasure of presenting another of our fabulous cheques. This time it was 87,000 Kc for the benefit of Junior Achievement CZ. It's great when we can raise money while at the same time having a great night out isn't it. <img data-cke-saved-src="" src="" "="" align="center?" height="410" width="500">

The funds were raised at our M4M and big thanks go to Vanessa who did a supreme organising job as usual.

The club was spectacularly honoured at the 2010 District 2240 conference in Trebic. Firstly, the club as a whole received the Presidential Citation for Strengthening Rotary's Future through exemplary action and leadership. Secondly, an award for exceptional service to the District was given to President Kraig. Only outstanding leadership could have enabled us to accomplish all we did this year. Thirdly, the exceptional service of PE Irena was recognised with the award of a Paul Harris Fellowship - and well deserved too. Finally, Gerry Tipple was awarded the prestigious Tomas Bata Award for service on major projects, especially those involving matching Rotary grants. And...

Our Caribbean 'flight of the imagination' party was heralded a great success by all who attended. Almost 100 people came to this event and all agreed that the food was great, the wine superb and the entertainment perfect. Even better, there were no check-in queues, no lost baggage and no delays.!Best of all, more than 120,000 Kc was raised and after paying a few bills the proceeds will go to the RI Haiti relief fund.
