Speaker - Mary Beth Growney-Selene - Rotary Club Membership Attraction and Engagement
Mary Beth, an eminent and active Rotarian, shared many ideas on how to grow and retain club members. - Make sure to bring people into the "inner circle" of your club; engage them in the nuances of your club and how it operates.
- People often join because they share the values of Rotary; service, fellowship, diversity, integrity, and leadership.
- Is the Rotary classification system obsolete? Use it to provide value, to demonstrate how members have information to offer the next generation.
- Be welcoming to guests.
- Ask someone to volunteer one-on-one to really get them engaged. It is the little things that get people involved.
- Make sure your speakers are interesting to club members.
- Survey your members annually to assess whether you are meeting their needs.
- Think of members in the same terms as you do your clients in business. Are you exceeding their expectations?
- If a member misses two meetings in a row, call them to see if they are ok and to let them know that they are missed.
- Diversity is more than just race; it includes age, gender, religion, and Rotary classifications. Does your membership reflect your community?
- Each of us is responsible for sharing our passion for Rotary and for making Rotary the service organization of choice.
| | Posted by Kim Ross on Oct 14, 2012 | | Posted by Kim Ross on Oct 14, 2012 On September 21, the Club held its meeting at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Pete Moe, Director of Operations, shared the history of the Arboretum and lots of other interesting information.
The Arboretum began in 1908 as the home of the University of Minnesota Fruit Breeding Center. It was started due to a nutrition issue for Minnesotans. Fruit contains important nutrients and there was a need to have sustainable fruit grown in Minnesota. The University collected the heartiest apples from the coldest parts of the world with the goal of developing an apple tree that could survive Minnesota winters. The winter of 1917 was very cold and the trees survived!
In 1922 the University developed the Harrelson apple. 80% of the fruit grown in Minnesota was developed here. Minnesota's most famous apple, the Honeycrisp, generated $10 million in revenue for the University. The Honeycrisp is sold in Europe as the Honeycrunch apple and royalties from its sale come back to the University.
The latest apple is the Sweet Tango, a combination of the Honeycrisp and Zestar. It has been exclusively licensed to Pepin Heights Orchard and will generate revenue for the University that will help support future research.
Thanks to Pete for a very interesting presentation! |
