A special unveiling of the newly installed plaque on a bench at the Rotary water spray park at Iroquois Park in Sidney, took place on the afternoon of March 30th, 2013. It was a wonderful turnout, on a beautiful spring day. This event honoured the contribution that Bert and Marolyn Stevens (and Bert's guide dog, "Bing") -- Rotarians all, including Bing who was designated by the club as an Honourary Rotarian -- have made to the Town of Sidney.

The idea of a commemorative plaque to honour Bert (who passed away in 2010) was originally Marolyn's idea, but she was pleased when those working to help her achieve this honour for Bert also thought it was important that her active role in the community also be honoured. And wherever Bert and Marolyn go, so too goes Bing...a wonderful ambassador for the town in his own right. Marolyn, currently stuggling with her fourth battle with cancer, was unable to attend the event, but she will get to view the video of the event very soon.

Poinsettias...as far as the eye can see! Members were hard at work early this morning, sorting the cartloads of poinsettias for distribution. It's a well-oiled machine of Rotary volunteerism, with some people counting, sorting and bookkeeping; others loading and unloading the plants; other members setting off in the vehicles, chock-a-block full of colourful poinsettias for personalized delivery to our purchasers. Well done, everyone! Image

The Rotary Club of Sidney by the Sea recently donated $500 to the SLEEPING CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD charity. Sleeping Children Around the World provides bedkits to children of any race and/or religion who will benefit the most, typically located in underdeveloped and developing countries. Our club’s $500 donation purchased 14 bedkits ($35 per bedkit) for children in Tanzania. Each kit contained: Mattress with cover, bed sheet, mosquito net; Khanga (printed fabric, used for clothing); T-shirt, school shirt, socks, flip-flops, blue cloth to make school uniform; school bag, exercise books, 3 pencils, 3 pens; and a packing/carry bag and a rope for mattress. The bedkits are made in the countries where they are distributed. Locally produced bedkits result in the elimination of transportation costs, provision of materials and labour at minimal cost, employment for families in the country, and assistance to the local economy and the country as a whole.  For more information about Sleeping Children Around the World, go to their website: www.scaw.org

The mayor met with Sidney by the Sea Rotary Club in midFebruary 2011 to explain the delays in building the Water Park. The Rotarymembers Fundraiser, for the Water Park slated to be built in the newly designedIroquois Park, has been long delayed in getting off the ground, with the endresults finally coming to fruition, guaranteed by the Mayor for Spring 2012!

Bruce Burns has forwarded the final report and some pictures from the Rotary club in Brazil with which we are working on our next Foundation project. The final report (in Portuguese!) is available to read from the DOWNLOADS menu, in the green column to the right. (For some fractured fun with translation, try copying and pasting the text from the application into an online translator like Yahoo's Babel Fish [babelfish.yahoo.com]. It won't be a perfect translation, but you'll get the gist of the content.) The pictures -- of the video-conference between Stuart and the club in Brazil, and of the cardio-respiratory monitoring equipment -- can be seen in the Photo Journal section.
