Friends,

To all those that have taken part in the ShelterBox training at "The Ranch" either through sponsorship or actual participation. Here is just some of the feedback. I have a lot more quotes just like this. We all should proud of the job we do on those weekends. We are like a Johnny Appleseed. Without the belief of the Lakeway Lake Travis Rotary Club and members of our community who fund or participate in  this training program it is not possible to have such a sucess. These Ambassadors who go through the program have gone back home and spread the word to literally thousands of people. There commitment was solidified by the outpouring of dedication and spirit from those who help put on this training.

Betty Mahalik This was the most incredible training I've attended in years!! It was more than a training, it was a life-changing experience. Thank you ShelterBox for your commitment to making your volunteer team the best it can be. So proud to be a part of it!

Karen Bartolo Coe I agree with Betty. It was incredible and I too am proud to be a part of it.

Devin Monk One of those unforgettable experiences in my life - possibly even a turning point.  (Devin now serves on the ShelterBox Relationship Comittee. He is the Editor of the Lake Travis View.)

Chris Rakowitz Dallas - Hope you're doing great! Still telling folks about the weekend there. You guys do such an amazing job putting that all together. I look forward to getting back down there again.

Doug Metz - I can say without hesitation one of the best if not the best training I have ever attended

Dan Christiasnson WI - You do not want to miss this event.

Bonnie Machitto GA - For me it was a life changing experience

Judy Hutichinson TX - It challenged me to be better than I knew I could be.  It took me out of my comfort soon and gave me what I needed to grow.

I could keep going on. But just wanted to say I am proud of how we are impacting the world.

Save the Date Oct 19-21st.
Best Regards

  PurplePinkie

This event – named after the purple dye painted on a child's little finger to signify that they have been immunized against polio – is a fundraiser sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lakeway/Lake Travis and held in various elementary and middle schools through the school year.  On Friday, May 4, approximately 400 students at Serene Hills Elementary School had their fingers painted purple ($1 per finger!) to raise funds to support Rotary’s goal of the world-wide elimination of polio.

As a result of Rotary’s efforts so far, more than two billion children have received the oral polio vaccine. Since Rotary launched its PolioPlus campaign in 1985, the number of polio cases worldwide has dropped 99 percent, and the virus remains endemic in only three countries – Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan.

Immunization activities have been carried out by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and UNICEF .

"The extraordinary dedication of Rotary members has played a critical role in bringing polio to the brink of eradication," says Bill Gates, cochair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has contributed over $200 million to PolioPlus.  "Eradicating polio will be one of the most significant public health accomplishments in history, and we are committed to helping reach that goal."

The polio eradication grant is one of the largest challenge grants ever given by the Gates Foundation and the largest grant received by Rotary in its 102-year history.  Since 1985, Rotary has made polio eradication its top priority and has contributed $633 million to the effort.

Thanks to all the students at Serene Hills Elementary school for their enthusiastic and strong support of this effort!  They raised approximately $810 during this event!

And thanks to Rotarians Jay Dolfuss (who organized the Purple Pinkie Project,) Melinda Osburn, Dick Dietz, Michael DeLaFuente, Earl Higgins, Gary Weldon, Ted McKnight, Clayton Amacker, Nancy Keetch and Jinger Poth . . . who's not yet a member of our club, but who obviously has a Rotarian's heart!

ImageOnce again, the Special Olympics Banquet on May 10th was one of the most inspiring meetings of the year!  This is always one of the club's favorite meetings.  32 Special Olympics athletes were honored by a recitation of their accomplishments by our own Jim Gentil as emcee, awarded a gold metal hung around their neck by club president, Wally El-Hitamy, and recognized by rousing applause from the entire luncheon guests.  Check out these photos:

The linked pdf file is a booklet from Rotary International outlining not only the steps for members proposing a new member, but suggestions for reaching out to our community for prospective members.  Take a look!  It also includes a New Member Proposal Form.

If you're interested in joining the Rotary Club of Lakeway/Lake Travis, we invite you to attend our meetings held at the Lakeway Resort & Spa, 101 Lakeway Drive, Lakeway, at noon on Thursdays.  We meet every week and would love to get to know you as you learn about Rotary and our club.

        DISTRICT GOVERNOR SURESH PAHWA'S  MESSAGE
Most of us in our Rotary District do not realize how similar and diverse our District is, and how different each club is. One of the most rewarding experiences for me during this Rotary year has been getting to know the clubs in our District. Each club has its own culture and its own signature project, yet all of us believe in the Rotary core values and the mission of the Rotary Foundation. Service Above Self is the Rotary motto and community service is the core strength of the clubs in our district. I can go on and on about wonderful community service projects being done by the Rotarians in our communities.

A Chinese proverb comes to my mind that has been quoted by the Past RI President, Clifford Dochterman. If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap.  If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.
