| Posted by Pam Hawthorne A group of college students from the Elmira College Rotaract Club, a junior club sponsored by the Elmira Rotary Club, recently returned from a service trip to Mexico. The EC students toured the Macultepetl area of Mexico for a week. The trip gave them the opportunity to perform community service work in Mexico, learn about their culture and establish a relationship with the Rotaract Club of Macultepetl-Xalapa. For their work project, students visited an orphanage and a shanty town where they installed flattened milk cartons as siding on houses.
In this photo, center, is Elmira College senior Daniel Bastardo holding a flag from Mexico that represents a brotherhood between their Rotaract Club and one in Macultepetl-Xalapa, Mexico. On the left is Elmira Rotary Club President Misty Purdy, and on the right is Karl Schwesinger, ERC president elect. On the table is a wind-up toy that represents a Mexican tradition called "Los Voladores de Papantla."

What Is Rotary? Rotary is a global network of community volunteers. Rotary club members are business, professional, and community leaders in your locality who meet regularly to plan and implement community service activities and network with other professionals. For those interested, members can also choose to become involved in international humanitarian service efforts. More than 1.2 million men and women in over 200 countries and geographical areas belong to over 33,000 Rotary clubs. Rotary builds international understanding through scholarships, exchange programs, and humanitarian grants. Throughout the world, Rotary clubs participate in a broad range of educational, intercultural, and humanitarian activities designed to improve the lives of others. Belonging to a Rotary club provides members with an opportunity to make a contribution to their own communities and to communities around the world. People join Rotary for many reasons, including community involvement, personal development, professional networking, and camaraderie with fellow members. But perhaps the most important benefit is the satisfaction gained from making a real difference in the world. This is an open invitation to you. Come join us at our regular Tuesday lunch or at our monthly evening social. | | Posted by Pam Hawthorne on Feb 14, 2012 The Elmira Rotary Club has pledged to create more smiles in our community by joining with the international "Million Smiles A Day" campaign started by Rotary International.
