Canada Safeway and the Rotary Club of Kenora joined forces to raise donations in support of Special Olympics Kenora, Saturday, April 27. Rotary volunteers hosted a barbecue sponsored by Kenora Safeway on behalf of local special athletes. In addition to selling grilled hot dogs and popcorn, supporters could make a $2 donation at the checkout counter for a chance to enter a prize draw. Rotarian and Harbourfront Concert Series maven Lucia Melnick was also on site raising donations through cookbook sales. “It was a great day and we appreciate the community support,” commented Garry Socholotuk, who along with Vicki Hawkins are community programmers for Special Olympics Kenora. “The barbecue provided good visibility and awareness for Special Olympics.” Special Olympics Kenora athletes train year-round for regional events; although their travel plans are sometimes derailed by Mother Nature. Socholotuk related how the team was looking forward to competing at the Spring Games in Thunder Bay April 19-21. Unfortunately, a late season snowstorm closed Highway 17 east of Ignace and the contingent returned to Kenora. Socholotuk said members are now looking forward to their annual banquet on May 25. Later this summer, Special Olympics Kenora will host its own fundraiser sponsored by M & M Meats in Norman on July 6. Reg.Clayton@sunmedia.ca | | Posted by John Dahl on Apr 20, 2013

Monday, August 20th was a busy day for District Governor Rick Hubbs and his wife Fran's visit to our beautiful city. The day was perfect; sunny and warm.
First stop was a breakfast meeting with Rotary's Executive in the lounge overlooking Lake of the Woods at the Inn. This was a time for Rick to learn about the club and discuss options and new ideas. One of his main objectives was to pass along the words of our new President and our theme of Peace through Service. The strongest request was to ask the members to continue the fight to eradicate Polio.
An afternoon of sailing on Rotarian Fred Wright's sailboat the "Wrighton" was next on the agenda, complete with lunch at Smith's Camp.
A Rotary dinner meeting at the Royal Lake of the Woods Yacht Club topped off the day, which included greetings from District Governor Rick Hubbs, the induction of new Rotarian Jay Penner and the introduction of special guests from Guatemala, Rotarian Nosberto Lou, his wife Sylvia Lou, and their daughter Maria Ines. | | Posted by Debra LeMaistre on Jul 30, 2012 $5,674 w as presented the St. Thomas Aquinas Wind and Percussion for their Lucky Ducky Ticket selling efforts.
