ImageIt’s time for a weekly update from me and the first thing that I want to tell you is that nothing has changed.  We are still receiving the royal treatment, learning a lot about Brazil and its people, and having a fantastic time.

ImageThe GSE 2012 Team to Brazil has enjoyed an exciting, but tiring first week in District 5060.  We have been particularly impressed with how welcoming, caring and supportive our host clubs and families have been.  We have experienced their warmth, generosity, and sincerity in every situation and they have gone way beyond our expectations.

We arrived in Brazil Imagea little late, then had a long trip from the airport because of an accident on the highway. Then we were immediately involved in a whirlwind of activities and food.  Talk about being treated royally.

We are all a little anxious about our first presentation, but since we have met overf half of the club members, it shouldn`t be too bad.

Today feels like a total of two days. I can`t believe how much we put in in a period of 12 hours.

Had the presentation reviewed and edited by a Portuguese man that sat beside me between Washington and Sao Paulo.

The future of Rotary and the service we provide for our communities locally and internationally depends on strong club and district leadership.  The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) through a series of fast-paced, interactive, one-day courses offers Rotarians the opportunity to refine their leadership skills and to increase their basic knowledge in Rotary.   The offered courses are fun, topical, interactive, and geared to busy business, professional and community leaders who want to be more effective leaders in their vocation and their Rotary club and more knowledgeable Rotarians.

The District 5060 North Rotary Leadership Institute Planning Team has now put into place a number of RLI training events for 2012.

The Rotary Leadership Institute continues to serve as an excellent program for Rotarians aspiring to assume leadership roles within their clubs and within District 5060, and to learn more about Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation.  In particular, participants in the program gain a clear understanding of the role of the Foundation in meeting the needs of peoples around the world who are less fortunate than themselves and in doing so recognize the impact that they and their clubs can have in helping these peoples.

In early March, the Rotary Foundation was advised through an interim report that phase two of a three phased integrated humanitarian program in the Ankober Woreda of Ethiopia had been completed.  As a result, the final instalment of US$61,000 was transferred to Ethiopia to enable the project to be completed.

We will consider all applications we receive for an Ambassadorial Scholar for the 2012-13 Rotary year but will give strong consideration to those whose chosen educational path is in one of the six ares of focus.

It is now time to start looking for an Ambassadorial Scholar for the 2012-13 Rotary year. We are very proud of those who have been chosen in the past and we will be looking to the future for those candidates who have chosen one of The Rotary Foundation Areas of Focus which are:

- Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution

- Disease Prevention and Treatment

- Water and Sanitation

- Maternal and Child Health

- Basic Education and Literacy

- Economic and Community Development

This new approach is in accordance with the new Future Vision of TRF which will be fully implemented in the 2013 Rotary year.

Please see the application process and guidelines/application form on the District Website or www.rotary.org

A successful Ambassadorial Scholarship experience begins in the capable hands of Rotarians like you who understand the difference the selection process makes in fulfilling the goals of the program.  The Rotary Foundation encourages districts to select Ambassadorial scholars whose study fields have a strong humanitarian impact and who request to study in countries that do not host many scholars.  For information on the selection of Ambassadorial Scholars, please refer to the Program Guide for Rotarians (publication 012) on the RI Web Site.
