Dear District Conference Guests and Fellow Rotarians,

Binota and I are pleased to extend our greetings and very best wishes to you as you participate in this 2011-12 district conference. We wish we could share in each of the more than 500 conferences around the world this year, but that is just not possible.  However, with the able leadership of your governor and the district conference committee, we are confident that this will be a very special and memorable experience for you.

The district conference is a wonderful tradition and a great opportunity to share information and learn about the projects and activities of other Rotarians in your district and around the world.  While our clubs are the heart of Rotary, it is at the district conferences where club members can become even more aware of the ways in which Rotary is making the world a better place.

When Binota and I began our life of service through my local Rotary club, we had no idea where our desire to serve would lead us. It is the same for all Rotarians, as none of us knows where service will lead. Rotary has accomplished so much, yet the world needs us more today than ever.  I encourage you to renew your dedication to your clubs, your district and Rotary --to Reach Within to Embrace Humanity.  At the International Assembly I said, "In order to achieve anything in this world, a person has to use all the resources he can draw on. And the only place to start is with ourselves and within ourselves." As you participate in your district conference, I ask you to remember why you chose Rotary and let service to others continue to motivate you.

We wish you an informative, inspirational, fruitful and enjoyable district conference.

Best regards,

Kalyan Banerjee
President, Rotary International, 2011-2012

Posted by Sandra Roberts on May 01, 2012

President Kalyan Banerjee asserts that every Rotarian in every club should have a role to play within the club. Therefore, bringing a new member into a club is only the beginning of the task in helping him/ her to get involved.

New and old members can find ways of becoming more involved in Rotary service. Rotarian Action Groups provide these opportunities.

Rotarians can then provide their skills and expertise an develop their interests to make a difference. These groups bring Rotarians from every part of the world together in the common effort to improve life.

Up Front features actress Martha Foster, founder of Living Earth TV.

This foments cultural exchange through films. Documentaries in diverse languages give the public access to the lives and cultures of people in many parts of the world. Her work, helped by the Wilmette and Hyderabad clubs, brings these documentaries to high school and college classes in India and the U.S.

The ROTARIAN interviewed Ed Liss of Somers, NY. (We note a Paul Harris pin on his lapel). His unique collection and restoration of juke boxes, with music specific to their vintages, was the topic. He is doing a computer program  that will allow Rotarians worldwide to tune in on his wide variety of music. It all originated as a hobby during his NYC boyhood.

This is a bike ride to raise awareness and funds for the Rotary PolioPlus
Foundation, and a way to have lots of fun together.

Riders are starting in Cranbrook and Nelson, B.C. on Saturday June 2nd, and
Colville, WA on Monday, June 4th, and riding to the Tri-Cities of Washington.
The final leg of the ride will be an escorted ride from Pasco to the District Conference
in Richland on Friday morning, June 8th. The refurbished iron lung will escort the
ride the whole distance from Cranbrook, as well as other chase vehicles.

The main rendevous point is Spokane, the evening of Monday, June 4th.

The point is to have fun, so the riding days are not usually longer than 55 or so miles. Riders
can ride as short or as long as they wish. Riders need not be Rotarians!
We are encouraging riders to get sponsor $s per mile. We also need volunteers to help
with support of the riders: transportation / mechanical help / aid stations / chase
vehicles / home stays / hospitality / general encouragement / finish line enthusiasm!

For more information, please call Lynn O’Connor at (509) 680-2065, or email to
colvillesign@plix.com. Please lend your support!

The US Ambassador to Honduras, Lisa Kupiske, along with USAID Director, William Brand, visited the Markets in Tegucigalpa to honor the work of Oneyda Ramirez, on the International Day of the Women. Oneyda is the Educator that is in charge of the Mothers Business Program. We (Castlegar Rotarians)have known her for 10 years and each year her English gets better. She could take over the program tomorrow if she had to, as she has many skills.

I have attached a pictures I took of her at work, while we were there. She is talking to Bill Feyrer, Randy and Edgardo with the wall of the dump school in the background.

Dear Rampur,

Because of your contributions through Rotary Direct, Rotarians around the world are helping to improve health, support education, provide clean water, and build peace.  Recurring gifts are the most cost-effective way for Rotary to process contributions, enabling even more support for grants, scholarships and vocational training teams.  I want to thank you for your generous and loyal support.

I also wanted you to know about a special promotion that will be providing double Foundation recognition points for all recurring contributions between 1 April and 1 July 2012.  As an existing Rotary Direct participant (formally known as TRF-DIRECT) you are eligible, and will automatically receive, double Foundation recognition points for all scheduled contributions that occur during the promotion.

There is no action required on your part, unless you wish to adjust the amount or frequency of your scheduled gifts.  I also invite you to share this exciting opportunity with others.   More information will be available at www.rotary.org in the coming days, but I wanted you to be among the first to know. Please help spread the word about Rotary Direct - the easiest, fastest and most secure way to "do good in the world."

Thank you again for your continuing support of The Rotary Foundation and its life-changing programs.

Sincerely,
Brian King, Director of Annual Giving
Member of Rotary Direct

Call for District Simplified Grants

Now is the time to complete your project planning and begin your District Simplified Grant (DSG) application!  Applications may be submitted beginning April 1, 2012.  All applications must be received by the District Grants Sub-committee no later than April 30, 2012.

District simplified grants (DSGs) are available to Rotary Clubs in District 5080 to fund one-time only humanitarian service projects serving the local or international community.

The maximum grant is $5,000 USD, and multiple clubs can partner on a single application to fund a larger project. The matching formula is 1:1, meaning that the District matches the club’s contribution dollar for dollar up to the maximum $5,000 per club.  However, if applications exceed available funds, the 1:1 match on a multiple-club application may need to be reduced.

A total of $32,697 is available for DSGs in the 2012/2013 program year.

Before a DSG grant application is submitted, clubs must send final reports for any DSGs outstanding for the 2011-2012 program year.  These reports should be sent to Steve Arneson, Grants Sub-committee chair at 402 Saint Street, Richland, WA 99354-2034 or by e-mail to sarneson@gmail.com.

The DSG application form, TRF terms and conditions, objectives and the DSG report form all can be found on the District website.   Contact Steve Arneson at (509) 375-1518 with any questions.

Randy (Tri-Cities Sunrise Rotary) and Betty Milne have agreed to sell Betty's Book for $18.00 and $5.00 will be donated to Polio Plus for every book sold. This is a great opportunity to get a great book and help eliminate Polio world wide

About the Book

The Blanket of  Blessings is loosely based on the author’s great Aunt Angie who came acrossthe country in a covered wagon, came to live with the Indians along the way,and moved on to California  in the late 1800’s.  Angie lived to the  age of 103 and had plenty of stories to tell. The Blanket of the Blessingsis based on just one of them.

Following that, I will be available for discussion on any of the points that will be debated at the Council sessions. If your club has an interest in having me attend a club meeting (or Board meeting), please contact me to discuss options.

The District Foundation Committee has developed this wonderful idea to help END POLIO NOW!!

Mission Statement

To provide a united District 5080 event to raise funds for local Rotary club charities and the Rotary

Foundation, Polio Plus Fund. The visibility of the Rotarians participating in this event will improve

local community awareness of Rotary, in addition to enhancing the health of our Rotarians and

fellowship among all who participate.

Take the Pledge

We ask all members in our 61 clubs to take the pledge, “Cure Polio One Step at a Time”.

Members would donate $1 for each mile that they run/walk between the start/finish times of this

event. A Rotarian my also solicit pledges from non-Rotarians for their miles run/walked. Rotarians

that are unable to participate may solicit a surrogate club Rotarian to run/walk for them.
